Yes it should be. Install the modem and set up a dial up connection to it. When you want to use it you may have to change your internet connection options (Tools - Internet Options - Connection Tab).

As it is an emergency connection make sure that auto dialing is dissabled.

Hilary, you may have to enable the infrared port in the laptop before Windows will see it. That will be done in the laptop setup. There is either a special button for the setup settings or they will be accessed in the normal way by pressing DEL on boot.

Thanks for your help guys.

I've now managed to get to the root of the problem. My husband tells me that he had to disable the infrared port in the BIOS because he wanted to use the serial port for something and it was conflicting with the infrared port.

He's now disabled the serial port and enabled the infrared port again and it's working fine. Apparently he tried assigning different numbers to each of the ports but they can't both work together for some weird reason.

I want to Install a New Hard Drive. How do I Copy my hard drive onto a new one?

Big Al - 07 Feb 2004 14:24 - 1298 of 11003

Rick

Not sure if the NTL setup is similar to the USB broadband modem I use, but I also have a dialup modem in the same computer as backup if broadband fails. I then simply change the default connection I want and dialup on my secondary phone line.

In theory therefore it should be very simple and there is no conflict.

Hil - I bet your hubby's in trouble! ;-)

Thinking of increasing the memory on my PC.

Currently use 512MB DDR 400. I believe there was a little suffix after the memory description of 2.5, I think this refers to the "latency" of the memory.

My question is do I have to match this 2.5 figure on the new memory stick, or would any stick of 512MB DDR400 do?

What would be the possible effects of using memeory from different manufacturers etc?

Thanks in advance.

Spaceman - 08 Feb 2004 09:53 - 1302 of 11003

2Abbey, you need 2.5 CAS or better but most will meet that spec, you should be fine to mix different manufacturers so long as it it some or higher spec however check your PC motherboard instructions as some do have limitations on mix and match.

Anyone Know how to copy files to New Hard drive?

Optimist - 08 Feb 2004 15:48 - 1305 of 11003

Iain are you trying to copy your entire system to the new hard drive?

If you are then check out programs such as Norton Ghost which I believe will sort you although I have not used it myself.

If you just want to transfer data then you could use Xcopy from the command prompt. I have also used this to transfer an entire system but you have to first make the new disk bootable and then mount both disks as secondary drives on a different system.

Once you have transfered your system keep the old disk in a safe place. You never know when it will come in useful if you get a problem on the new disk. Also, make sure that your new disk uses NTFS file system.

Just switched on spare PC this morning.
Did the initial start up - but end up with a black monitor and the cursor in the top left corner of the monitor.

Any idea what has happened?

Optimist - 09 Feb 2004 10:41 - 1307 of 11003

Timeliner

What O/S?

WinXP Prof

Timeliner

What do yo mean by the initial startup?

Is it starting to load the O/S or does it stop before that?

Timeliner - 09 Feb 2004 11:22 - 1310 of 11003

It takes an age to load the operating system, before giving the blank screen/cursor.

Might be the operating system which is a bit low - P2 Celeron 350 with 384 mb ram.

Optimist - 09 Feb 2004 11:30 - 1311 of 11003

I have seen this before and never fully sorted it.

Try loading in safe mode and make a note of the names of any drivers that it hangs on. Also try loading the last good configuration.
