THE TALK TO YOURSELF THREAD. (NOWT)

goldfinger - 09 Jun 2005 12:25

Thought Id start this one going because its rather dead on this board at the moment and I suppose all my usual muckers are either at the Stella tennis event watching Dim Tim (lose again) or at Henly Regatta eating cucumber sandwiches (they wish,...NOT).

Anyway please feel free to just talk to yourself blast away and let it go on any company or subject you wish. Just wish Id thought of this one before.

cheers GF.

" Separate figures show that Nigerian diplomats owe more than £67,000 on parking fines issued in 2011."

That's funny most of London's traffic wardens are Nigerian

greekman - 06 Jul 2012 11:29 - 17496 of 81564

Typical UK yet again.
I would think that our diplomats pay parking fines in other countries, as we tend to 'Play the game, and think that not to pay, simply isn't cricket.

Here's how they stack up:

Other countries owing fines to the UK.

China, 257 fines outstanding, £27,690 owing
Afghanistan, 245 fines outstanding, £25,820 owing
Turkey, 253 fines outstanding, £25,590 owing
Saudi Arabia, 169 fines outstanding, £15,440 owing
Cyprus, 140 fines outstanding, £14,500 owing
Pakistan, 128 fines outstanding, £13,120 owing
France, 120 fines outstanding, £11,900 owing
Ghana, 107 fines outstanding, £10,760 owing
Uzbekistan, 102 fines outstanding, £9,680 owing
Malaysia, 89 fines outstanding, £8,950 owing
Ukraine, 86 fines outstanding, £8,260 owing
Russia, 71 fines outstanding, £7,920 owing

Diplomatic immunity was originally to stop diplomats being set up for minor crimes by corrupt officials and to give immunity to certain search procedures.

And yet the murder of Evonne Fletcher, fatally shot during a protest outside the Libyan embassy at St. James's Square, London, in 1984 by an Iranian Diplomat was the worse example of diplomatic privilege.
The way this was handled was one of the most shameful acts of our Government ever.
No one had the bottle to state the obvious, that the diplomatic immunity act was not designed so that a person could get away with murder.

At the time of this shameful act, I was a serving Police Officer who had to watch helplessly as the murderer walked free, protected by colleagues of the murdered Police Woman.
It still rankles.

OK rant over.

Haystack - 06 Jul 2012 12:56 - 17497 of 81564

It is not possible to make countries pay parking fines. Diplomatic immunity extends across all offences and crimes. If a diplomat kills a British citizen or anyone else in the UK, he will have immunity from prosecution. It is a worldwide agreement.

Fred1new - 06 Jul 2012 13:57 - 17498 of 81564

Diplomatic immunity is a necessary evil and has flaws. Perhaps the rules should be renegotiated internationally, and/or by agreement between the involved countries before acceptance of their diplomats.

Diplomatic immunity can be withdrawn from a diplomat by the country they represent and has been infrequently done.

While there are abuses of the system in this country, the system has also been frequently abused by the UK government in other countries. Of course the latter abuses were always excusable.

I would think in state of hostility, without the agreement the ending of war would even more difficult. (I suppose the Internet Video Systems may be a way around some of those programmes.)

Interesting breakdown:-
