rather than pick out individual stocks to trade, it can often be worthwhile to trade the indices themselves, especially in times of high volatility.
for those so inclined, i attach below charts for FTSE and FTSE 250, though one might equally be tempted to trade Dow or S&P, which is significantly broader in its coverage, or even NASDAQ
for ease of reading, i have attached 1 year and 3 month charts in each instance

YUM! :-)
Those tech giant results are pouring out. Microsoft posts loss of $3.19bn on restructuring. Nokia, weak demand for Windows, and job cuts all not helping. Apple out also et al............... we know where this is going ;

certainly made a wrong call ..... it's only a small position, but AAP's numbers have smashed that one, and indeed several other tech results met with considerable disappointment
after hours, dow dumped further 50 to 17,865 .....need to contemplate whether to sit it out or cut or even reverse

FTSE now at a point where there's possible support and thus a bounce may be there for the taking .......
DOW is already recovering a bit, possibly courtesy of coca cola's numbers

Greece has taken a crucial step towards a bailout after its parliament passed a second set of legal reforms.
The passage of the measures means that negotiations on an €86bn European Union bailout can begin.
The reforms include changes to Greek banking and an overhaul of the judiciary system.
