Please report bugs and enhancements (BUGS)

andy.lovell - 04 Nov 2002 11:26

If you're having any problems, or want to suggest some improvements, please post below!

Level2 changes
In the last few weeks we've needed to implement some code changes to make us compliant with the LSE's rules on the access of Level2 data.

The following requirement is now in place:
You can only use 1 program on 1 computer to access Level2 on MoneyAM using a single username.

This means that you are able to view as many Level2 windows using any one particular browser, or program, that you wish, however you will not be able to use both Firefox and Internet Explorer at the same time (the same goes for using Quote Tracker or TradeSeeker at the same time as viewing it using a web browser)

If you find you're being logged off of MoneyAM's Level2 with the message 'you've logged on from another location' then check the above and make sure you're not running any other programs at the same time before reporting this as a bug.

Better now. I assume you have tweaked something.

IanT(MoneyAM) - 22 Mar 2004 11:16 - 1831 of 7315

Doc,

Jonathan is on a late today so no we hadn't tweaked anything - leads me to believe that it may have been something out of our control, but I will get him to take a look anyway.

DocProc,

No, I havent tweaked any of the servers for a number of weeks now.

google will be faster than us becuase a google page is normally only 15-20k big (if that) where as you are viewing a lot more information on moneyAM (the thread list is a lot to download!)

Are you running anything else at the same time which could be consuming bandwith? such as your email? Anytime that your internet connection is used by another program, less is available for your browsing, causing slowdown when viewing pages.

Spaceman - 22 Mar 2004 13:04 - 1833 of 7315

I am certain that there is a intermittent problem with the MAM BB and has been for many weeks, I have now stopped posting about it because nothing is being done, in summary the BB often stalls for up to about 30 seconds normally when refreshing the thread list or reloading a thread following a posting. I have seen it on multiple PC's and Mac computers connected with various methods of connection ranging from dial up to multi MB links and using a variety of Web browsers.

Kayak - 22 Mar 2004 13:07 - 1834 of 7315

Agreed spaceman, only rarely 30 seconds for me but very often not anywhere near as quick as it ought to be. ADSL here.

IanT(MoneyAM) - 22 Mar 2004 13:07 - 1835 of 7315

Spaceman,

I will point this out to Jonathan.

Thanks

Ian

TullettJ (MoneyAM) - 22 Mar 2004 13:14 - 1836 of 7315

Spaceman,

How often is often? I can honestly say that on all three of my machines I am unable to reproduce the problem (combination of Win2k, WinXP and more frequently used, Linux, using firefox and IE on Win* and Firefox on Linux) so it is even harder to diagnose the problem.

There are a few other changes I can make to the BB but they are structural changes so cant be done lightly.

I will see if I can start working on them this week.

Spaceman - 22 Mar 2004 14:55 - 1837 of 7315

J, I have posted about this many times if you look at those posts you will get some idea. Most of my time online is with a Mac and OSX or a PC with W2K. I have not been online so much for the last week nor will I be for the next week or so, however I have noticed the problem today but at the moment it is OK.

Just to expand on the 30 seconds I mentioned above, I was trying to indicate that that was approximately the worst case, its certainly not the normal 'stall' normally its more like 5 seconds or so.

DocProc - 22 Mar 2004 15:00 - 1838 of 7315

"I am certain that there is a intermittent problem with the MAM BB and has been for many weeks,............,in summary the BB often stalls for up to about 30 seconds normally when refreshing the thread list or reloading a thread following a posting."

This is also my own experience. It is MoneyAM who has a problem.

I'm sure this 'delay thingy' is at your end and not mine.

DocProc - 22 Mar 2004 15:09 - 1839 of 7315

When I log on I go straight to the thread list and I notice all the graphics at the top are there a good while before the thread list appears. The graphics appear in two stages.

1. Bang! Instant! The bannner advert block.
2. And virtually straight after - The MoneyAM tool bar.
3. Absolutely ages afterwards.................................................and then some.............................but not yet......................... The Thread List.

This tells me you most probably have these items on separate servers.

I don't have a delay with your top of the page graphics appearing, just the thread list, the postings on it and making and editing my own posts.

Sometimes, on the Traders thread, where some of the graphics on the opening post are from 'snappytrader.com' and which I can't take a positively good guess as to whether this is hosted on one of your servers, well, it gives me the most peculiar view on my screen. As the loading period of Croc's graphics takes so long and 'a bit of the graphics picture appears before the whole lot has fully loaded', well, I just see lots and lots of vertical coloured lines. I wait a few secs and then it normalises for me.

Again, I feel this phenomina is from a problem at your end and not mine. I NEVER EXPERIENCE this slow loading of imagery anywhere else other than on MoneyAM. And it is again .... on the Threads section.

TullettJ (MoneyAM) - 22 Mar 2004 15:19 - 1840 of 7315

DocProc,

Just looking through the logs for the average page size for the BB thread view, assuming that all the images are cached, is 75-80k

assuming the lower value for this example, there is 75000 bytes that need to be downloaded to your browser.

Using the theoretical max throughput on your modem (56k) (that is obtainable if you have a perfect line and the call is answered by ISDN on one end) you would get a throughput of about 7000 bytes per second (56000/8)

based on those figures, your average page loading/displaying time would be:
75000/7000 = 10.71 sec

however due to line quality and running other applications that utilise bandwidth it is very unlikely that you would get anywhere near 7k/s for MoneyAM. so the times are likely to be higher.

As such, i dont think the problem Spaceman is experiencing (with delays on multi MB lines) is the same.

Robb - 22 Mar 2004 15:23 - 1841 of 7315

Can someone pleeeese get rid of the click click bloody click from the cmc advert. Its just taken me 15mins to find out where the hell its coming from.

No sound on adverts

edit - errrr........... polite request please :-)

DocProc - 22 Mar 2004 15:28 - 1842 of 7315

Hmmm?

'Over the road' the Thread list appears in two stages:-

1. Double spaced list, which then quickly changes as
2. Single space list appears.

This probably makes it seem quicker appearing and so it doesn't create an issue. This makes it appear to you as though it must be your modem/machine causing the problem.

Interesting, eh?

I take your point.

TullettJ (MoneyAM) - 22 Mar 2004 15:35 - 1843 of 7315

DocProc,

There may be something I can do with the way the page is rendered so that is starts when the data is streaming to the browser rather than waiting till it has everything and then rendering it.

Removing the table would be a great way, but im not sure how possible that will be.

I will add it to my list of investigations to do on the BB.

J.

Kayak - 22 Mar 2004 16:04 - 1844 of 7315

Jon, unfortunately for your theory I'm on ADSL and also get the symptoms Doc describes. Firstly there is often a wait after the headers and before the body of the BB index, and secondly the strange lines on Croc's header (which I think are due to some bit of Java or whatever in his header).

However there are also many cases where the wait is before anything is displayed, i.e. with a white screen.

Generally speaking even though the ping from me to you is around 13ms the pages load much more slowly than, dare I mention them, no I don't :-0

TullettJ (MoneyAM) - 22 Mar 2004 17:00 - 1845 of 7315

Kayak,

Im not saying there isnt a problem, I am just pointing out that any delay that a 56k user experiences isnt just due to that possible problem...

The way tables are rendered in certain browsers can cause the white screen.

Ill try and start investigating the problem later this week.
