rather than pick out individual stocks to trade, it can often be worthwhile to trade the indices themselves, especially in times of high volatility.
for those so inclined, i attach below charts for FTSE and FTSE 250, though one might equally be tempted to trade Dow or S&P, which is significantly broader in its coverage, or even NASDAQ
for ease of reading, i have attached 1 year and 3 month charts in each instance

i'm not that bloody clever!
however, it helps when you trade as you see (as was said to me) and can actually pay attention to the gyrations and above all, not get too greedy
in fact, i wouldn't be surprised to see the indices tracking higher tomorrow, though slightly disturbing that FTSE could not hold 5070 nor DOW (currently) 16,359

Are you looking at the same DOW as me ? cause it wasn't 16359 when you posted

no .... sorry to be ambiguous ..... it has tried that hurdle a few times during the day and failed to hold, but it could conceivably have another crack at it during the evening

I think it's simply called uncertainty cynic. It's the one thing nobody likes and it's always going to be magnified under the market lens. After all, we are actually unable to predict the future with any degree of accuracy at all, we simply rely on probability based solely on historical performance.

Good call Chris, you old Toffee you, and you jimmy b!
At the end of the day, we short term traders depend, nay thrive, on this sort of volatility. It's a day-trader's dream! :-)
