Hi, Hil, welcome back.

Glad your oscillators are functioning but Cable doesn't seem to be behaving accordingly.

D.

hilary - 03 Sep 2004 15:22 - 1888 of 11056

Hello Derek,

I know ..... sad when the oscillators don't work, isn't it? ISM below forecasts too? What's a girl to do?

The trouble is, too many players see Cable as being a longer term carry trade sell now and are quick to offload into any rally. Their argument is very simplistic in that US interest rates have got further to rise percentage wise from 1.5% than UK rates have from 4.75%. Fundamentally, I disagree but technically the chart says that the 1.90 high is quite probably in place.

Thanks for that link, moonie. Ain't historicals marvellous!

moonblue - 06 Sep 2004 14:27 - 1894 of 11056

to be fair he called the 192 top when everyone else was screaming for 2.00..mm
and the 1.88..so if the 17100 comes off..im going long

MightyMicro - 06 Sep 2004 14:31 - 1895 of 11056

Absolutely. UK house market is cooling rapidly, reducing pressure in the UK (versus the Eurozone 2% single currency forget it etc), the Fed will have to rise eventually, and there you have it, subject to the usual alarums and excursions.

hilary - 06 Sep 2004 14:54 - 1896 of 11056

I'm not so sure that the UK housing market is cooling rapidly yet, MM. Once house prices are off 20% or 30%, UK interest rates are sat somewhere at around 8.5% to 10% and repo's and personal bankruptcies are hitting fresh highs, then I'll be inclined to agree. I doubt that'll happen for around 4 years though.

For now, the debt mountain isn't getting any smaller and institutions are still prepared to lend at ridiculous income multiples and on hare-brained self-certification schemes.

moonblue - 06 Sep 2004 15:49 - 1897 of 11056

one must remember the us deficit is a large one..so gdp/usd will be a great long at 17100

MightyMicro - 06 Sep 2004 16:03 - 1898 of 11056

Hil, fine, but how do you reconcile 8-10% interest rates with entry to the Euro?

Or is this just your way of saying that Euro-entry in impossible given the radical differences in our economic structures?

(Please don't infer that I'm a Euro-enthusiast . . . :)

hilary - 06 Sep 2004 17:23 - 1899 of 11056

MM,

It appears that neither of us are Euro enthusiasts.

:o)

Personally, I can't see us joining the single currency for a long, long time yet, if at all. The sooner Bliar gets the message that it'll never work into his thick head, the sooner we can all move on, imo.

chocolat - 07 Sep 2004 00:38 - 1900 of 11056

Ah - but it ain't up to Bliar... we have Chancellor Brown to contend with, and we'll not be moving on for a while to come.

hilary - 07 Sep 2004 07:53 - 1901 of 11056

Indeed, choccie. It's a worry. He's got even more sawdust between his ears than Bliar.

MightyMicro - 07 Sep 2004 11:25 - 1902 of 11056

Sawdust or not, at least there's little sign of Euro-enthusiasm from Brown either.

In yesterday's FT, Wolfgang Munchau wrote that the lack of a political union is what threatens the Euro. In fact, he claims that the new constitution will be ineffective and lack the authority to enforce economic policy. So the Euro might fall apart, he says.
