FTSE + FTSE 250 - consider trading (FTSE)

cynic - 20 Oct 2007 12:12

rather than pick out individual stocks to trade, it can often be worthwhile to trade the indices themselves, especially in times of high volatility.

for those so inclined, i attach below charts for FTSE and FTSE 250, though one might equally be tempted to trade Dow or S&P, which is significantly broader in its coverage, or even NASDAQ

for ease of reading, i have attached 1 year and 3 month charts in each instance

as long as it's small, you shouldn't come to too much harm even if the gunslinger carries the day

Claret Dragon - 05 Nov 2016 09:08 - 21046 of 21973

Small position. I have just a gut feeling Hills will win it.

Would think there would be some sort of bounce on Monday, but for how long? Market will still be here after the US Election, made a few bob short on UKX yesterday, still think it will bomb.

cynic - 06 Nov 2016 17:18 - 21048 of 21973

not always reliable but sunday ig is indicating all 3 major markets as positive
for the morrow especially, draw your own conclusions and make your own decisions

cynic - 06 Nov 2016 21:27 - 21049 of 21973

so amazingly the slurs by staunch republican comey are admitted as effectively never having had any foundation

well, well, well!
anyhow, the markets knee-jerk reaction was predictable in the circumstances (+78, +110 and +127)
more interesting will be to see how it carries through into the open of europe trading and beyond

I have had a FTSE trade close its self this evening nicely up, plus i have a couple of stock trades i opened on Friday that i would have tried to jump out of tomorrow but i think we are in for a blue open in the morning and all because the FBI says Clintons e,mails are nothing to worry about , the Donald may be in trouble now.

Claret Dragon - 07 Nov 2016 06:50 - 21051 of 21973

Risk paid off going long on Dow late Friday when I should have been in the Battlecruiser.

Stop moved up.

Sequestor - 07 Nov 2016 08:18 - 21052 of 21973

FTSE seen opening cautiously amid Brexit, US vote
-------------
hahahahahahah UP 90 POINTS

Always a a good bet this forecast- in reverse.

cynic - 07 Nov 2016 15:16 - 21053 of 21973

for myself, i opened another modest Dax long this morning at 10,408
if it holds this level and the gunslinger doesn't spoil the party, then there should be a fair bit of upside

jimmy b - 08 Nov 2016 16:10 - 21054 of 21973

Long DOW all day ,paying off now ..

cynic - 08 Nov 2016 16:26 - 21055 of 21973

taken a long time hasn't it ...... ditto Dax

however, don't read anything into it, as the polls don't shut for hours and the first two states to declare are both solid republican

first important result will be at midnight uk time from FLA - a definite undecided which trump pretty much has to win

jimmy b - 08 Nov 2016 16:30 - 21056 of 21973

I closed half of it as i bet rather large this time.

I don't think he will win ,however i wouldn't be surprised either way ,there may a lot of usual non voters who vote ,just like Brexit and that would pull him through .

cynic - 08 Nov 2016 17:13 - 21057 of 21973

since 16:30, Dow has kept moving ahead and is now +110 at 18,365

HARRYCAT - 09 Nov 2016 07:19 - 21059 of 21973

Hope everyone is ready for the drop today!!! Who would have thought!

Snip - 09 Nov 2016 07:33 - 21060 of 21973

I have been ready since september, all in cash with stock limit buys in place. Roll on. Don`t trade indices any more as I have to be more cautious now but I like watching

cynic - 09 Nov 2016 08:26 - 21061 of 21973

markets are remarkably sanguine

jimmy - hope you weren't battered to death, or worse still had your position forcibly closed, for of course the indices are now well off the bottom ...... indeed, going long would not be altogether foolish, even if much of the recovery is already past

jimmy b - 09 Nov 2016 08:28 - 21062 of 21973

I closed my other half last night ,very happy ,in fact it is not knocking the market here as much as i thought it would .

jimmy b - 09 Nov 2016 08:31 - 21063 of 21973

I havn't bothered to post over on the other thread for a few weeks but i'll say here this is a left wing nightmare , i would think Fred's downing the bleach as i write .

cynic - 09 Nov 2016 08:37 - 21064 of 21973

i took a modest hit, but as i don't have stops, certainly not much harm done

jimmy - there's a very good index trading thread on advfn that concentrates almost exclusively on Dax - INDEX TRADING WITH THE MT4 SOMNUS EA .... its epic is INDX
