Try and define rock bottom. Is there more than one institution interested and if so price might not go as low as is thought. There seems to be good two way business at this level- perhaps closing bears - I dont know. I may be wrong but my feeling is that the banks may not wish to see shareholders in NRK totally wiped out as this may not help sentiment with the sector. Although a longer shot, NRK may be able to ride it out if money conditions ease but, of course with a change of management. We will see over coming weeks/months how things pan out.

Dont see why any bank would want to buy NRK whose business model is totally discredited. A so called bank based in Newcastle with 70 odd branches is hardly going to be a world beater. The Big Boys have effectively eliminanted an irritant in the mortgage lending market.

Annie, not to late to sell and short the stock, have made back 30% of my loss today and hope to get even in the next 2 days, meanwhile gold is the place to be.

Cynic: Reasonable question. Usual stupid reason of not wishing to crystalize loss at this level. Why should I worry, it won't change my lifestyle , unlike perhaps NRK ORDINARY employees who probably have seen really significant savings in the form of Co. stock option savings schemes evaporate in the last few weeks. I was in such a scheme with HBOS until recently and there but for the grace of god. Regards. P.S. Whoever picked up 5m shares after hours must be good at big sums !

It was probably a sell given the current price. The trade is 100 times market size so could've been worked over several days. Can't remember what the exact threasholds are, but I think 100x would result in a delayed report to the market. I've no doubt people in the city will've worked out what a reasonable price would be for NRK. Haven't a clue if it's north or south of here though. Definetly not a knife I'd want to try and catch.....
In my opinion.
Strawbs.

annie - lousy answer! you are surely trying to make rather than lose money, and it is inconceivable that you will recoup these losses by hanging on ...... and my guess is that any 5m buy will be the closure of a very profitable bear position.

may be harsh, though i think not, but then i always say it like it is .... why pussyfoot? ..... you profess an honest answer but seem unable to accept the honest response, and arguably (well hardly!) indisputable truth

bought shares when they were 300p , was thinking that this is the bottom, but i was wrong and i remember some people here exited that they bought them for 400p, well quick question: do you think that without big investor shares might bounce back just because smaller investors and few good news??

NRK more likely to be split up, maybe between a couple of big banks, and retaining scaled down branches up north for the small loyal investers.
Are we going to see shareholders not cutting their loses, and looking at every piece of news though rose tinted spec's as was the case with SEO ?

Brand has been so badly damaged it's hard to see why any organisation would pay other than a v low price for all or a part. Once trust has gone, it takes a long time to rebuild.

with sp hovering around 180 as i write, this is beginning to look like a reasonable gamble, though that may be greed rather than common sense taking a grip

Northern Rock rejected JP Morgan emergency funding
LONDON (Thomson Financial) - Beleaguered mortgage lender Northern Rock PLC
turned down the offer of emergency funding from US banking giant JP Morgan Chase
& Co which may have staved off liquidity issues and the consequent run on the
bank last week, the Telegraph reported citing a source familiar with the
situation.
The company called in its relationship banks after it issued a profit
warning in June, but decided to reject emergency funding from JP Morgan, which
would have included around 500 mln stg as part of a wider solution proposed by
the US bank, the report added.
"There was extensive financing offered, albeit the management would have had
to swallow some unpalatable truths," the Telegraph quoted a source familiar with
the situation.
The rescue package contained some severe conditions, including punitive
interest rates, and Northern Rock may have had to sell off mortgage assets at
discounted values, Telegraph sources speculated.
