Thomas Cook's new flagship store: More 'Apple' than 'travel'
Thomas Cook UK has unveiled a new flagship concept store in Leeds, which it plans to roll out to other cities if it proves successful in the peak holiday booking period from January to March.
The travel giant said the store, in Leed's White Rose shopping centre marked the first phase in its store evolution project and showcased what high street agents could look like in the future.
The new 130 square metre store enables customers to research and book their holiday directly with one of 25 travel consultants at a newly-installed "advice bar" or online using an inst-store tablets.
Ambient music and video content will be streamed throughout the store. In a statement, Thomas Cook said: "The store concept is designed to create an environment that encourages greater customer interaction and allows them to dictate how they engage with the business and what level of service they require.
"The new concept will also deliver a level of service that's different to the existing routine and journey, and one that inspires and excites customers about their holiday."
Customers will be able to check-in on Facebook to receive special offers and share personalised holiday-related content."
It said that research shows that 46% of customers still want to deal face-to-face with an expert at some stage before booking their holiday, but that it needed to provide an "omni-channel" for the future.
Thomas Cook retail director Joanna Wild said: "Our new store will be more Apple than travel and uses technology and techniques championed by iconic, high-tech brands to place our customers at the heart of the experience; allowing them to choose how they access information and dictate the level of assistance they receive from us.
"We know that shopping habits are changing, with more and more customers are researching their holidays online and transactions becoming quicker, but we also know that a holiday is a massive purchase for customers who want to be inspired and enjoy that purchase process, and of course they still value that human touch and having expert advice on-hand if they need it. This is where our concept store will stand out and we will use it as a test bed to see what elements we might want to introduce to other stores in future."
The launch follows two earlier proof-of-concept store trials in Oldbury and Wimbledon which, it said, generated positive results and feedback from customers.
"Leeds White Rose concept store is the next step of this journey to create the ultimate store of the future."

Constant drip of positive news coming from the press newswire now. The new Leeds White Rose concept store is to be opened before Christmas and Harriet Green will no doubt take the opportunity to maximise the publicity attached to this event. TUI have just had a very good trading year, partly based on the demise of Thomas Cook, but now they have a genuine competitor back in the market place. A new CEO, a new Board and a new ball game. Share prices at the moment are TUI @ £2.85 and TCG @ 32p . According to Travel Weekly the better investment is TCG. I'm not about to argue with Travel Weekly who are experts in the business and know what they are talking about.

Thomas Cook rallies 10.9 percent after Morgan Stanley (Dusseldorf: 653571.DU - news) upgrades the stock to "overweight" from "equalweight" and raises the prospect of a cash return to shareholders.
"The new management team's efficiency drive will be large enough to drive a meaningful uplift in profits and investor confidence, thus facilitating the necessary equity raising. We see 300 million pounds EBIT as possible, but think targets in Q1 could exceed this," Morgan Stanley says in a note.

MARKET REPORT: Booking success at Thomas Cook
By Geoff Foster
PUBLISHED:22:00, 7 December 2012| UPDATED:22:00, 7 December 2012
It will happen again this year. On Boxing Day after you’ve just scoffed another plate of cold turkey and pickle and made short work of a bottle of Sancerre or Fleurie, you will switch on the TV and advertisements will persistently sing the praises of a holiday in the Mediterranean or Barbados.
After spending an arm and a leg on Christmas, the last thing you really want to think about is forking out £2,000-plus on a holiday in July or August. Or do you?
The UK is currently shivering as Siberian-type winds cut across the country and according to forecasts, Britain faces its worst winter for 20 years. If so, Joe and June Public will be rushing to book a holiday in the sun before 2013 is a matter of weeks old.
Thomas Cook, the 171 year-old travel firm, hopes so. It nearly went bust in 2011 after families cut back on holidays. It secured its future in May of this year when a £1.4bn debt refinancing deal extended its financing by two years to May 2015.
Its shares have soared 60 per cent over the past fortnight and closed yesterday a further 4p up at a 52-week peak of 36p. Directors last month waded in for almost 1m shares around the 23.5p level and that bolstered confidence and suggested that a strong recovery was on the way.
Chief executive Harriet Green, who joined in July, bought 500,000 shares at 23p. She recently reported a strong finish to the fourth quarter and said: ‘Thomas Cook is viable and working. It has turned the corner.’
Morgan Stanley yesterday upgraded to overweight from equalweight.

Countdown to Christmas
Thomas Cook (LSE:TCG)
Today : Monday 10 December 2012
LONDON, December 10, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --
•With local prices set to soar during the festive season, record numbers of Brits plan to travel abroad this Christmas.
•Over 4 million Brits travel overseas for celebrations
•With last minute cheap holidays, families across the country are opting for warmer weather and better prices.
The Association of British Travel has estimated a massive 4.25 million Brits will travel abroad this holiday season*. More and more families are swapping Christmas presents for cheap holidays, as they secure cheaper prices and sunnier conditions abroad.
With the countdown to Christmas well and truly under way, the travel experts at Thomas Cook share some of the most popular holiday destinations for the Christmas and New Year period.
USA
In terms of USA holidays Florida always proves a popular choice during the festive season. One of the country's most popular states, the winter months are the perfect time to see the Florida sights with ideal weather and fewer crowds.
With temperatures averaging in the low 20s, December is the ideal month to enjoy water sports, hiking and animal sighting - all activities that this state is famous for. Florida is also home to some of the country's best amusement parks and travelling during the winter months guarantees lower prices and shorter queues.
See the Med for less
With prices set to soar during the Christmas period in the UK, many Brits are expected to treat themselves to a Mediterranean holiday instead of staying put. With many resorts and holiday regions offering discounted rates on package holidays, Mediterranean getaways are proving a popular alternative to ordinary gifts.
An all-inclusive Cyprus holiday or a getaway to sunny Bodrum are hassle free gifts for young couples, older travellers and families alike with plenty of winter sun breaks offering rock bottom prices if you bring the kids.
Christmas on the high seas
If there's one holiday worth getting excited about it's a getaway on a cruise ship. Everyone dreams about a Christmas where all the work is done for you - and that's exactly what passengers get onboard a Christmas cruise.
Not only do guests get to experience turkey and all the trimmings, they do so without ever stepping foot near a kitchen.
So, instead of preparing to unwrap the same boring Christmas present this year, plenty of couples and families are expected to be counting down to a cruise adventure or other winter holiday courtesy of leading travel operators such as Thomas Cook.

cynic, I've given up over the last few years trying to figure out a lot of stuff that goes on in the markets! I've done exactly the same - lost patience with a share and then suddenly it's gone skywards. I think the turning point for the market sentiment here was when Harriet Green and her new Board members spent a considerable amount of money buying the shares and investing in the company. That threw a big spanner in the works as far as a lot of shorters were concerned.
