Pommy, just seen your last posting. Try what I posted above but disconnect your 80g HD first and only reconnect it once you're happy that you have win2000 installed and running ok.

robber, thanks for that, bit worried about opening the box having only just received it, ive tried reformatting the hd already and starting over using the format NTFS option as part of win2000 install.
my own fault this really, they would have installed all the software but they wont use my hooky win2k and i refuse to pay for a new version!!
Might get one of their lab techs to come round for a few euros!!!!

Hi
Anyone help please getting a bit desperate trying to get my screen back to how it was. The computer crashed last night and when I finally got it restarted it wanted me to start it in safe mode. It now starts ok but the screen resolution is all wrong, too large and won't change back in control panel. Must be some sort of driver problem, tried reinstalling the driver, but still no change. Heeeeeeeelp please someone clever.

This won`t be of much help to you at the moment Tim but ,if you bite the bullet and buy an Apple imac machine you will never see another blue screen I promise.
I bit the bullet and bought an apple imac machine and it has all been so EASY .

Tim, did you do something beforehand like install new s/ware?
First thing I'd suggest is backup all the data files you haven't recently backed up (assuming you do regular b/ups!). In safe mode they'll prob have to be done to floppies as it usually doesn't allow other means of backup, but try anyway. Then restart and see if the problem recurs.
I'm not much good on further diagnosis, but when it has happened to me it usually sorts itself out on next bootup. You can always try step by step bootup or whatever it's called & see if the problem makes itself known. Last time it happened to me I had to reformat the HD and reinstall windows.
Porky, what's an apple imac ;-)
Sincerely
William Gates

Croc,
I know you are a whiz on multiple screens. And I know others around here work with them.
I have a pair of Samsung LCD's and a 550 Matrox card.
If I alter the colour using the settings box I see the change on the left hand screen. Is there a way I can then get the right hand one to match?
Once I have seen that work I intend to use a utility called Photocal to calibrate the screens with a Spyder device that works as a sensor.
I want them calibrated for my work with digital photography - but I would not even start if I only could do the left hand screen as that would ruin my chances of making good trades in my other life < << gggg >>>
Any thoughts folks?

porky - 1 L2 update per day. It's really hampering my trading. ;-))
Seriously, though, I've never used a Mac although my brother has been a user all his life, so much so that he has little clue about Windows. He's just got himself one of these Titanium 17" things, or whatever they are. Looks very nice indeed.
My view has always been I had heard numerous websites were problematic for Mac users. Do you find that? In particular the financial ones.
Cheers,
Al

Yes, really I would love an Apple, no blue screen of death, plug a peripheral in and it works. Why do Windows PC's require you to have a deep understanding of the reasons why such & such a thing won't work and what you have to do to rectify it :-( but the world is heavily PC based, especially the financial website world as Al says.
My first PC - An amstrad PPC 640 "laptop" with a Sprint 20Mb hard disc in place of the second floppy, running DR Dos so I could compress the data.

I'm installing BT Plug and Go home broadband on Wednesday and would really appreciate any tips or advice from those who have already done this.
Sorry if it's a bit mundane but I really am a "computer numpty"!
Many thanks

jojo: I went through the process a couple of months back. It really is simple. They make it sound really complicated just to make you feel the price was justified. Your really can't plug anything into the wrong socket..... And, I never thought I would hear myself saying this but, the Helpdesk are really helpful and do answer the phone if you require a soppy question answering!

thanks very much - but I bet I can cock it up!
When ordering the lad suggested inverting the sequence but I can't remember the sequence...
For example if told to enter CD then plug in - he would do the opposite.
Like you amazed you found a BT helpdesk to be of use.
Thanks again.
edit
Another stupid question - I realise a firewall needs to be installed but, can they be used on more than one machine? I'm buying a new computer for the web and will continue to use the old one for admin. If I install the firewall on the old machine can it then be installed on the new one?
Apologies for the numpty level of question - just seems pointless putting a firewall on the old machine for a couple of days if it means buying another for the new machine.

jojo, when installing any piece of hardware that comes with a CD, always install the CD BEFORE the hardware, unless the instructions very clearly say otherwise.

jojo: what I remember about the firewall is that you have to disable it anyway before you install the BT Broadband CD. Not difficult, but who needs the stress?! I connected the filters (fancy word for disappointingly small plastic things!) to the modem and waited until the CD got to the part where it told me to connect the modem to the back of the computer. Even if you do accidentally get things out of sequence, I promise you will not launch a nuclear strike or blow up the house!

thanks for taking the time to reply
I haven't bought firewall software yet.
Line to be enabled on Wed and equipment delivered same day, they say they will e-mail when line enabled.
No idea on e-mail addresses - they did say I can link old btopenworld.com ones to the new broadband ones.
Thanks again.

jojo - don't go out and buy a firewall until you've had a look at zonealarm. It is free and is used by a lot of people on the bb's. It is excellent. Have a look at the website options :-
Zonealarm Website
Go to the bottom of the page for the standard zonealarm which is free.
