How to profit from Betting Exchanges (BEX)

How would you like to trade a market where you get large regular price swings every 10 minutes in the afternoon, seven days a week. A
market where all prices are set purely by supply and demand, few transaction costs, no middle men and you only pay commission if you win? Where you can freely act as a market maker and where you have direct market access and where you can create a spread for others to take?

Betfair has revolutionised the betting market and created an open platform for exchanging risk on sports events. This market is now viewed much more like a traditional financial risk market than an old fashioned betting market. Smart users have realised that there are huge opportunities on Betfair because they can buy and sell risk in much the same way they would in a normal financial market but without the burden of cost or the restricted access that is usually associated with traditional financial markets.

While in the US I watched a presentation that was very interesting. Very complicated maths but the summary was that for psychological reasons laying low and backing high is the preferred strategy regardless of your underlying reading of a game.

Unfortunately, I got f*****d on the Clisjers game.

Backed her at the outset but only had the scoreboard to go by. She only scraped the first set but then as the odds started to go berserk I realised something was wrong.

You win some and loose some! Unfortunately, I lost this one.

At least Sharapova didn't let me down.

Thank god for greening up. 2 mins from the end of extra time Sporting Lisbon get the equalizer to go through in the qualifying market. Great game end to end stuff.

Scripophilist - 05 May 2005 22:44 - 2550 of 10502

1.01 sunk at half time as well I believe. Lots of 1.01 sunk all over the place today. Makes me tempted to lay a Labour win at 1.01!!

cunningham - 05 May 2005 22:47 - 2551 of 10502

LOL - are you looking at the election market? Only seams to me that the turnout market and winning seats have any volume to them.

Scripophilist - 05 May 2005 22:52 - 2552 of 10502

I can't resist it. The US election was massive volume but the UK appears to be much less at the moment. Maybe because it is not so close and therefore people are not trading in and out as much.

Scripophilist - 05 May 2005 22:53 - 2553 of 10502

Winning majority looks like an interesting market.

Scripophilist - 05 May 2005 22:53 - 2554 of 10502

I'm going to spoof it for a laugh.

Scripophilist - 05 May 2005 22:55 - 2555 of 10502

Well I'll be damned somebody freaked out. Just gone green. Put the order in and the market moved to 100.7% to lay so I did. A coincidence I think.

Scripophilist - 05 May 2005 22:56 - 2556 of 10502

A few overround bots working the market I think you could have some fun if you have the patience. I'm taking the laptop to bed, I think I am going down with a cold.

cunningham - 05 May 2005 22:58 - 2557 of 10502

Have you just done it again. Market keeps moving out to 100.1 - 100.4 on the lay side.

Scripophilist - 05 May 2005 23:03 - 2558 of 10502

For some reason people seem to be pushing it out constantly, I'm happy to sit here and mop it up.

cunningham - 05 May 2005 23:16 - 2559 of 10502

Out to 101.3% looks like you are going to have plenty to mop up. Certainly more entertaining than watching the coverage.

Fundamentalist - 05 May 2005 23:39 - 2560 of 10502

Evening all

Managed to pick up some free money on Taylor in the darts again tonite.

Watching the election coverage but not trading - as scrip says the us equivalent was far better to trade

Fundamentalist - 06 May 2005 00:47 - 2561 of 10502

See it is now odds on a majority of 1-60, though the odds of no overall majority have tumbled from around 40 to 7.2

Scripophilist - 06 May 2005 08:16 - 2562 of 10502

Stayed up quite a while but not enough money really to trade big volume. Eventually feel asleep in bed with my Laptop which shut down around 2:15am this morning.

B-P - 06 May 2005 09:00 - 2563 of 10502

scrip,
whats it like sleeping with a laptop ???

bakko - 06 May 2005 12:55 - 2564 of 10502

Fundy,

If you're out there, I've sent you an internal email.

Not sure whether it went through as using it for the first time?

Fundamentalist - 06 May 2005 18:04 - 2565 of 10502

Bakko

email received - been on site all day hence only just picked it up.

John

Fundamentalist - 06 May 2005 20:48 - 2566 of 10502

After Howards resignation, the market is on betfair for the next tory leader.

I cannot believe that 14.0 has been matched on William Hague!!!!!!!
