No one wants to be the one doing the explanation. Particularly before the referendum. The immigration numbers are vastly under-disclosed. Every one knows that but the government is gutless. You have to add to those numbers the illegals and dependents under the age of 16.

quite right, at least for those of a certain age. However the variant dependent is now standard and as common as dependant in the Oxford English Corpus. In US English, dependent is the standard form of the noun. :)
Since I have been focused on North and South America for years now, I must admit that my language is US biased. It has taken me a while to refer to my phone as a mobile and not a cellphone, particularly as the latin languages also use the term celular.
