The only problem I had found was with streaming prices,but since Moneyam came on site I have had no problem,streaming prices ok.
I have had no problems with other sites of any significance.
Streaming prices will work on other sites if you purchase some software that allows you to run windows.
I will agree with you that applemac is in a minority, but I promise you, you would not be disappointed.
I think in my case it was also contrarian thinking,I feel there is room for other systems other than microsoft windows.

Here's something curious for you boffins. I'm using Win98 with IE6, recently upgraded from 5.5. I used to have an ISDN connection but six months ago moved house and had to use an external 56k analogue modem, at a so slow 26kps. But now I have an ISDN line again. Hooray....except it can take up to three attempts to connect via BTopenworld. The error message that keeps coming up is "Port disconnected by remote computer." From the Diva Software Suite I have enabled Eicon V.120 modem and Eicon V.120 56k modem. In My Computer/Dial Up Networking/BTopenworld/Properties I am using Connect Using Eicon Channel 1. Is there something else I have forgotten to enable ... or what?

Hi, I have a delicate problem! Someone where my wife works is using her Pc when she is not around and leaving the homepage under explorer as a hard porn site.
Is there a way that I can (using temporary internet files?) find out the time that the site was accessed last/or made the homepage?
I believe thay are on windows 98 so assume IE5?

Many Internet surfers have had their web browsers 'hijacked' as a result of wandering onto a web site that has hidden malicious code.

The 'Home' or 'Start' page is changed to a porn site or some other advertising heavy web site and it can't be changed back to the desired page because some malicious code has taken over your system.

Here's a free download called Start Page Guard which will protect the Home page from being changed in ths way.

I'll do a bit of research and find out about audit trails and logs.

NB. I've never had my home page changed to a porn site though because I never go to porn sites, even accidentally. Honest guv. ;-)

Skinny, your wife's office has to use another way to trap this user, I think.

Looking at this from the ISP angle, Web Logs are files maintained on a server that include the name and IP address of your computer, your browser type, operating system, Web page URL you accessed, and the URL of the last page you viewed.

That means every gif, jpeg and html file that the user's browser requests fills up the log file. Log files obviously look a complicated mess, since the files requested by the users will be massive, various and mixed up. An average web page contains about 1 html file and maybe 10-20 gifs and jpegs - resulting in each page viewed generates 11-21 lines of data in a log file.

That makes log file analysis quite hard. You have to keep track of each individual users separate log file lines and in most cases you will have to use a software package to analyze the web log.

Would the phone line trail be of more use?

Doc - thanks - in reply to your post 272/273, this keeps happening and the suspect keeps blaming the cleaners !! But its quite ironic that he gets to work early and uses the Pc to check his email via Hotmail. I've been advised on advfn (can I say thet here?) to look at TOOLS/INTERNET OPTIONS/SETTINGS/VIEW FILES.
If u have better advice (not quite sure what u mean by the the phone line trail?) please let me know - my wife is very, very upset by this!

From a Systems Administrator point of view, rather than have someone install software on a machine I manage to stop this from happening, I would rather be informed that it *is* happening, and put the appropriate policies (management policies, not system policies) to stop this behaviour from being allowed.

Then, if it happens again, then the appropriate actions can be taken against the purportrator.

But that is only my view as a lowly sysadmin...

skinny, even if you manage to log the time that doesn't prove who it is. The best thing to do is to point a video camera at the PC so you get a nice shot of the perpetrator and the PC screen at the same time.

Skinny, If all you want to do is stop him doing it then simply sticking a 20 web cam on top of the monitor should do the trick. Even if he's convinced its not watching him there will always be that little nagging doubt in the back of his mind ;-)

OK we can now tie the user down to what time he is doing this.

Click on Last Checked header again

Notice how doing this column header clicking sorts out the machine usage access time into a specific earliest/latest order. Inspect pertinent Internet Address files to make intelligent assessment of what porno' sites have been accessed and at what time. Do appropriate deductions, etc.

TO Kevin you may well have fixed your ISDN connection by now - but one point - you should not be using V.120 these days. PPP with a varient of CHAP is what you should be going for.

Trader2 - Still not fixed. Usually takes two goes (sometimes three)to connect. The Diva software I have, version 1.65, a bit ancient I know, doesn't offer PPP with CHAP(whatever that is). Musing over the problem, I wonder if it might be better to uninstall the Eicon stuff, disconnect the Cat 5 connection I am using, and then use the BT USB connection and their software. I'm put off doing that because of the dire warnings on the BT disc about incompatability if earlier ISDN stuff is not totally removed. Hmmmm....

TOKev - I'm not sure about the ins and outs but I used the BT USB connection and setup from their disc and have never had a problem. That was on a new clean machine.

Robb - Mine's an old and dirty machine, so goodness knows what conflicts are buried deep in the registry. Which is why I want to try to keep everything as simple as poss. (Plus, I'm a Computer Idiot anyway, who doesn't know what I'm doing or what I'm talking about!)

TOKev - I'm not familiar with Diva - so can't help further. But whatever options you get presented with for ISDN/Home Highway don't choose V.120.

Trader2 - The only other modem options are RNA, X75 or BTX, none of which seem suitable. The annoying thing is that it all worked perfectly six months ago but I can't remember what the settings were. Eicon Channel 0 maybe?
