News from the other side:-
'Stanelco confident of redefined strategy'
By John Whitehead
Posted 25 February 2009 11:47 am GMT
Biopolymer and RF equipment maker Stanelco is expected to have achieved the doubling of its bioresins business last year for which it had been on course at the half year point.
Although firm figures for the companys 2008 performance await the publication of its results and it is currently in its closed period, ceo Paul Mines is confident that it has maintained the sales rise it indicated earlier. This would mean sales of 5-6,000 tonnes of its portfolio of starch-based polymers produced from the Biotec plant in Germany, which it co-owns with Frances Sphere group.
Speaking to prw.com in London yesterday, former ICI, Courtaulds and Betts executive Mines confirmed that interest in the biopolymer field remains firm despite the economic crisis. None of our projects have been stopped or cancelled, he said, although he conceded that falling prices for oil based polymers have widened the premium for the Stanelco products.
Now approaching his second year at the helm of the Southampton-based company, Mines is pursuing a clearly defined strategy of pushing ahead with biopolymer developments and adopting a focused approach for the companys RF welding business.
Stanelco now accepts that the hype which surrounded its GreenSeal technology for sealing food trays and saw Stanelco shares soar to a 300m capitalisation, was overdone. Now, the focus is on more traditional applications for the RF technology, developed under the former STC parentage, such as lorry sidings and marquees. Furnaces for producing fibre optics from glass, where the firm is a global leader, is an additional priority.
Sales for the six months to 30 June last year totalled 7.4m compared with 3.9m for the same period in 2007 with the vat majority accounted for by the BioResins business. Miness new team includes Paul Law heading up this operation and Neil Martin in charge of the RF business.

To guess where the sp will end today is a pure lottery.
Any analytical method would be about as useful and accurate as sticking the tail on a donkey.
Reading the markets of late is almost impossible.
I have shares in another company that several times in the last month have been up/down as much as 15% for no apparent reason.
Reading tea leaves, shooting dice, any other random system these days to predict share prices is probable as accurate as any analytical methods.
We are all used to good/bad news moving share prices, I guess that we will just have to accept that in the current climate, share prices move just as much on a whim.
Although never easy to read, I always considered markets easier to read than women (what isn't) but they are both becoming a close run thing.
Be good when the markets get back to normality (where they ever).

From SEO's website:-
Stanelco BioPlastics supports 'Trees for Schools'
Stanelco is delighted to pledge its support to Tree Appeal's Trees for Schools
initiative, providing trees for school grounds to educate children on the importance of
sustainability. This commenced with Tree Appeal's patron Professor David Bellamy
OBE planting trees at two schools in Bedfordshire on Thursday 26th February -
further events are planned through 2009.
Paul Mines, Chief Executive of Stanelco said:
"Our bioplastics material is derived from natural potato and corn starch to make
biodegradeable and compostable materials that return to the natural ecosystem at
the end of their lives, so this was a natural fit for us. We are happy to be playing a
role in educating children about the importance of sustainability through this
initiative."

I hold some of these shares and I am happy to see the uptrend.
I think the results will be better than expected, but would be happier if there was a little more volume. Size of trades are small.
Would expect SP up until results are out with a drop and then continuation of uptrend.

SEO is flying.
Was this the report which started it:
Stanelco boss optimistic about future growth
Jill Park, packagingnews.co.uk, 27 February 2009
Bioplastics specialist Stanelco is predicting "good growth" in the sector as it enters a period of stability with a new management team.
Paul Mines exclusively told Packaging News that he did not expect "an explosion" in the bioplastics market, but rather "good growth" in markets where there can be "real benefits" of using bioplastics.
Mines identified multi-layer flexible films for food preservation and extrusion coatings for paper and card as Stanelco's two main growth markets.
However, he was realistic about the uptake of bioplastics by the supermarkets, admitting that they are still at the "toe in the water" stage where they use bioplastics for specific products.
Mines recognised the end of life issue as a major concern for the UK market as only a small percentage of councils have means to dispose of biopolymers at present.
Consequently, he was keen to highlight new legislation that would mean councils will be forced to provide anaerobic digestion facilities by 2010, thus providing the much-desired outlet for bioplastics.
He also addressed the issue of availability of raw materials when he said that the company has reduced its dependence on one single raw material.
"As volumes are increasing, a lot of customers are looking for forward price certainty," he added.
Chairman John Standen joined Stanelco at the same time as Mines in 2007, following the departure of Martin Wagner in April 2007.
Paul Law and Neil Martin have been appointed as managing director of the Bioplastics division and general manager of the Radio Frequency division respectively.
Financial director Sue Bygrave joined the team in January, completing the new management structure.
A US sales office was established in 2008 and in the past three months material has started being exported to China to be converted into products destined for the European market.
Going forward, "functional product improvement" is the company's main focus said Mines, followed by "working with customers to take that into the market".
Also, the company can now offer a bioplastic capable of withstanding up to 95 degrees centigrade, which opens up new market opportunities and a company is already in the final stages of commercial development of a pack made from the material.
Stanelco will publish its preliminary results on 26 March 2009.

It is those trades on the Plus Markets I was after. The 11 mill was not counting those.
These days about a third of the total trades on via the Plus Market.
But Thanks anyway.
