Optimist - 09 Jan 2005 11:02 - 2874 of 11003

Iain it's something to do with NAV. This link gives some info on sorting it http://www.box-one.org/new-3884503-4523.html

Iain - 09 Jan 2005 11:38 - 2875 of 11003

Cheers.
Oh 1 more;)
Belarc shows
"192 Megabytes Installed Memory"

Slot 'DIMM0' is Empty
Slot 'DIMM1' has 256 MB

Have i got 256 or 192?

Norton shows "Total physical memory 192mb.Total windows memory 859mb"
The Kids computers do seem to run slow.
Just to remind you they have Athlon Xp 3000+2.1ghz
Motherboard:Board: ASUSTeK Computer INC. A7N8X-VM400 Rev 2.xx
Bus Clock: 200 megahertz
BIOS: American Megatrends Inc. 3.00 07/30/2004

Can i add more memory?
Should i do a computer course:-)))))

Optimist - 09 Jan 2005 12:04 - 2876 of 11003

Iain

It looks to me as though you have 256MB installed but only 192MB is working. Having said that, it is very rare for that to happen.

What does the boot up memory check show?

If you have only 192MB working then it could be the memory or the motherboard at fault. Try reseating the memory in the slot and then swapp it into the other slot (make sure you are earthed before touching it).

In any case, 256 MB is getting low these days. You would see an improvement with 512MB. You could also lose performance due to your 256/192 issue.

If either the slot or the memory is faulty, then don't use it. Buy a single 512MB.

Should you do a computer course? - Why bother with the knowledge availible on this board;-)

Optomist:Ive said it before.Your a star!
Many, many thanks. To all the others who have helped.
Thats it for now.Ill let you know how i go on with reseating etc.

Would any of the Superstars like to comment on this:

AVG has done a full system scan and come up with the following "viruses"

C:\Documents and settings\Rob\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deploymentcache\javapi\v1.0\jar\loaderadv268.jar-688ccab8-34b72e6a.zip

thenb the same files with ":Counter.class" and ":\Parser.class" at the end. I suspect they aren't viruses but relate to an update of java that failed. How should I deal with them?

Many thanks in anticipation.

Rob.

Optimist - 09 Jan 2005 20:16 - 2879 of 11003

SC

I'm not sure what they are but would not argue with your guess.

I would delete them to the recycle bin until you are sure that everything works OK. The worst case is that you have to reinstall Sun Java.

Optimist , your explanation very clear , can now look into it further, many thanks

please note , tried to e-mail reply but got delivery failure?

Iain - 10 Jan 2005 11:50 - 2883 of 11003

Took the Ram out of the other identical machine.Same promblem on both by the way, only getting 192 ram.Put 2 in one and got 422 ram.Going to contact PC World today but suspect they`ll say the warranty is void cos i opened them up.They had seal tags on the back.
The Memory is :"Hynix pc2700u 256DDR 333mh"

Optimist - 10 Jan 2005 14:50 - 2884 of 11003

Maddoctor

I'm pleased you found it useful. There appears to be a problem with that email address at the moment. Hopefully it will sort itself out.

Iain

That is very strange. I have not heard of two machines having such faults.

IMO if PC World don't honour their guarantee because you have opened it then they are cheating you especially as many of the accessories that they sell require you to open the machine.

It is a lesson to everyone. Don't buy off a manufacturer that seals their computers.

Iain - 10 Jan 2005 16:10 - 2885 of 11003

Taking both Pcs to local PC World tommorow.Ill let you know how i get on:-)
Printed off Belarc report as proof.
Ps When i added Both Ram cards to 1 pc it still showed as 64mb ram on boot up screen

maddoctor - 11 Jan 2005 11:56 - 2886 of 11003

my Norton Internet Security keeps switching itself off without me doing anything and then returns without me doing anything - worrying because I only recognise when its off when ads start appearing - anybody any idea. My local IT guys say its rubbish but is that true.

Iain , mine 2004NT , don't know if that makes any difference?

Iain - 11 Jan 2005 12:02 - 2887 of 11003

Mine works Fine.Internet security 2005.Never seen the Reuter`s ad or any pop ups.
If thats an indication:-)

Optimist - 11 Jan 2005 12:10 - 2888 of 11003

Maddoctor

There is the possibility that this is being caused by a virus so assume that it is.

Make sure that Windows firewall is enabled (Norton recomend switching this off but as Norton is switching off you need something), Dissable system restore, boot in safe mode and do a full virus scan.

You could also check the Norton logs to see if they give any clues.

maddoctor - 11 Jan 2005 12:14 - 2889 of 11003

Optimist , I have MS firewall ON and Norton off. Norton anti-virus is not affected and has remained on. Going to do a scan.

Iain - 11 Jan 2005 15:30 - 2890 of 11003

Optomist:
Found out that the Pcs have an integrated Video card that was set to use 64mb of memory.Re-set it to 16mb and now have 240 ram showing.
If i want to buy a new Video card. How do i disable the integrated one??
