Not that simple I'm afraid. The recycle bin is 'apparently' empty. The files I mentioned are all hidden. Single user also.

If I go to C:\Recycler I have 3 hidden 'bins' (or folders I suppose). 2 have 85 bytes in them (they are called s-1-5-21 xxxxxx & s-1-5-21 xxdifferent numbersxxxx.) My 3rd one is s-1-5-18, has 3.19 Gbits worth of 229,000 files, all of which are hidden and are, I suspect, deleted temporary files from my internet cache.

Harlosh - 07 Jun 2005 15:06 - 3328 of 11003

I get a little red cross in the corner of certain screens I try to look at.

For example I want to see live scores at this site

http://www.stellaartoistennis.com/default.asp

but when I hit the live scores link I get a blank screen with that dreaded red cross.

I have switched off my pop up blocker but am at a loss for any other ideas to resolve it.

I would really appreciate any help.

Regards.

The three 'bins' are seperate recylers for each user on your computer. So long as you have administrator rights, you should be able to view and delete the files but you will have to set explorer to view/delete hidden and system files.

If there are 229,000 hidden files, they are almost certain to be old files deleted after a system update. Windows doesn't normally put these into the recycle bin. Be very carefull before you delete them.

Harlosh

I'm only guessing, but does the site require Java or some other plugin?

Harlosh - 07 Jun 2005 15:20 - 3331 of 11003

Optimist,

I don't know but I did have a problem with Money AM when I changed my PC a few months back because I didn't have Java. I remember I downloaded it and everything was OK.
Just looked through my programs now and can't see Java listed. Now where's that gone?

IanT(MoneyAM) - 07 Jun 2005 15:24 - 3332 of 11003

Harlosh,

I can't speak for other sites, but it does sound like you require the Java plugin.

You can see if it makes a difference by clicking on this link and downloading it:

Ian,

Yes I have Java. In fact I deleted it and reinstalled the latest version. Still no joy.

Have you any knowledge of Shockwave or Flash. I wonder whether this (or the lack of it) is the problem.

Greystone - 07 Jun 2005 16:17 - 3334 of 11003

Seem to have blown the sound card on my Tosh Satellite laptop. Are they easy to buy and fit? Bear in mind I don't have a PC World just around the corner ... and I have ten thumbs.... ;-)

DocProc - 07 Jun 2005 16:21 - 3335 of 11003

Sounds like a scrapper for sure, Alan! Trust me. :-(

However, all is not lost. I will give you a tenner for it, although you do have to post it from Spain so I will make that 20. :-)

Kayak - 07 Jun 2005 16:23 - 3336 of 11003

Harlosh, right click/Properties on the cross and look at the URL (you may need to scroll it down) to see what URL it cannot load.

Kayak - 07 Jun 2005 16:25 - 3337 of 11003

Greystone, the sound circuitry is likely to be part of the motherboard, in which case unless you find a similar laptop on eBay with something else wrong and from which you can cannabilize the motherboard, you're unlikely to be able to repair it cost effectively. If you do find a replacement motherboard you'll need the maintenance manual from the manufacturer's website. Before all this, try reloading sound drivers etc though.

Greystone - 07 Jun 2005 16:30 - 3338 of 11003

Kayak - Tried the sound driver route and no joy. Guess I've just blown it! :-(

'Bout time I treated myself to a new one I suppose. It has to work very hard, after all.

Doc - My missus offered my 50 for it so I'll save the postage.... :-)

Thanks for the constant help guys!

Alan

Kayak - 07 Jun 2005 16:41 - 3341 of 11003

Yes it's Flash, Harlosh, download from here: http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash

Also download Shockwave while you're there: http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=Shockwave

Harlosh - 07 Jun 2005 17:38 - 3342 of 11003

Kayak,

Many thanks. Managed to download Shockwave without any problem but I can't for the life of me get hold of Flash.

Each time I click on Install it tells me to click on the gold bar at the top of the screen. For some reason I don't get it when trying to install Flash though I did get the gold bar when installing Shockwave. Damn mystery to me.

I've amended the security settings in IE as per the instructions on the Macromedia website too. Seems to be something to do with Active X whatever that is.

Unless you have any other suggestions I'll just keep trying everything.

Many thanks for your help.

Kayak - 07 Jun 2005 18:15 - 3343 of 11003

Gold bar? Don't know what that would be.

Try rebooting and trying again.

Phew. I think everything's hunky dory now. I was logged on as admin but still couldn't 'see' any of the individual files even though though I had clicked on 'show hidden files'. Eventually I set up a system restore point and asked windows to delete the recycler folder with the virus in it. It deleted all files but kept asking me about the system files before deletion. I replied no to all. At the end it said that it couldn't delete the folder because there were still some files in it. Ran anti virus on the folder and no problems. Folder now contains only 200 files. Now going to get a beer or two.
I wonder what the folder/files are there for??????? I suspect it's something to do with my V-Com Fix It utility.
PS V-Com were of no help.

Harlosh - 07 Jun 2005 19:40 - 3345 of 11003

Kayak,

It's actually a faintly yellow bar which appears beneath the address bar to explain there is a problem when trying to download. By clicking it, it allows the download to take place. It's similar to the bar which appears explaining how to temporarily remove the pop up blocker (only that's in blue). Sorry, it all sounds very confusing I know.

I have rebooted without success.

I'll keep trying.

Thanks again.

Harlosh - 07 Jun 2005 20:03 - 3346 of 11003

Done it!!!!

Only problem is I'm not sure how. Something to do with internet content anyway.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction Kayak.
