Cable warns rates may have to rise to tackle 'raging housing boom'

Business secretary Vince Cable has warned interest rates may have to rise to hold back a "raging housing boom" in London and the south-east.
Speaking on the BBC's Andrew Marr Show, he said if interest rates were not increased by the Bank of England, there was a danger that large parts of London could end up being inhabited only by foreigners and bankers as house prices spiralled.
He added that, on the other hand, if interest rates were increased it would have a negative impact on UK manufacturing since exchange rates would rise, making exports harder.
It is the first time Cable has spoken so openly about the possibility of interest rates rising due to the imbalance in the economic recovery.
He again called for the government to rethink its Help to Buy scheme, which he said was conceived in entirely different circumstances.
Cable said: "There is a raging housing boom in London and the south-east, and not in other parts of the country.
"The danger of raising interest rates is that you hit those parts of the country which are not yet fully recovered, you push up the exchange rate and that hits manufacturing.
"We don't want that. On the other hand, if you do not increase interest rates - if that is the way the governor and the Bank of England go - then this boom that is taking place in housing prices gets out of control and the only people that can afford to live in large parts of London are foreigners and bankers, and we don't want that either."

She is a non-compromising bigot. IMHO, her attitude on this is as daft as Tanker's, who has similarly acted idiotically over this and shot himself in the foot with a Lose/Lose promise to himself just because someone managing this lady Muslim put her on the tills in the food department. The lady Muslim has also shot herself in the foot too by restricting herself to where she can now work in the store.

confess i have no problem at all with this lady's scruples, and indeed i have come across it myself ..... it causes no particular inconvenience, any more than if there is a sub-18 on the till who also cannot put through alcohol ..... is that any more silly?

that said, you could ask if a strict muslim should travel in a taxi or aircraft where perhaps someone has been sitting and actually consuming alcohol or pork
i'ld be genuinely interested to learn how the line is drawn and why

by the way, i think calling this lady a bigot is far-fetched indeed

So will it be acceptable for me to ask the cashier what religion they are and if they reply 'muslim' to say 'sorry I don't want you to serve me' and go to another checkout just because I've bought a packet of scratchings?

When I had my company in the City, a cafe was taken over by a Muslim and his wife. He stopped doing bacon and sausages and was bust in 6 months. The word spread quickly an no one went there for breakfast any more and no take away bacon or sausage sandwiches.

Sorted.

Now Marks and Spencer has backtracked and said that Muslim staff who did not want to handle these products would not man tills and would work in other roles such as in clothing or in the bakery.

The issue was revealed after customers at a London branch of Marks and Spencer were told they would have to use another till because the assistant would not be able to serve them pork or alcohol.

At the time Marks and Spencer said staff could refuse to sell these items, based on their religious beliefs.

I think it daft, but prepared to accept my own and others daftness.

But, still think in M&S organisations the size of operation makes the choice they make sensible and doesn't effect their working.

However, I think the lady concerned should check the rules and regulations and interpretation of the chosen religion and been explicit at the time of employment.

Perhaps, she will review her "stances".

I know some UKIPpers and Cons change allegiances to other parties and "Christians" become atheists, even known the reverse happen.

I find it strange that the lady concerned chose to work for a company that sells alcohol and pork.

Karren Brady, a star of the BBC’s Apprentice series, has been offered six safe seats to fight at the next election for the Conservatives.


However she has rebuffed them all and insisted that she has to concentrate on her business interests.


The number of opportunities is being seen as a sign of the desperation that the Tories have to persuade the high profile businesswoman to become a Tory MP.


Miss Brady is already well-known in the Conservative party, and has taken on the role of the party’s small business ambassador. She introduced George Osborne, the Chancellor at the party’s annual conference


A source close to Miss Brady said: “Karren found all the approaches very flattering, but she is very busy with West Ham and other work and has no plans for a professional career in politics".
