THE TALK TO YOURSELF THREAD. (NOWT)

goldfinger - 09 Jun 2005 12:25

Thought Id start this one going because its rather dead on this board at the moment and I suppose all my usual muckers are either at the Stella tennis event watching Dim Tim (lose again) or at Henly Regatta eating cucumber sandwiches (they wish,...NOT).

Anyway please feel free to just talk to yourself blast away and let it go on any company or subject you wish. Just wish Id thought of this one before.

cheers GF.

Quote:

Consuming alcohol is forbidden in Islam, and some Muslims refuse to handle it at all.

An unnamed customer told the newspaper they had tried to buy a bottle of champagne from an M&S store in London, but the member of staff, a lady Muslim, "was very apologetic but said she could not serve me" and asked the customer to use another till.

A spokesperson for M&S said: "Where we have an employee whose religious beliefs restrict food or drink they can handle, we work closely with our member of staff to place them in suitable role, such as in our clothing department or bakery in foods.

This lady has indeed acted in a quite ridiculous manner. The alcohol is inside the bottle and so she was not able to touch it anyway. She might as well determine not to touch the floor of the store over which the alcohol was carried or the road outside on which it was delivered and transported.

She is a non-compromising bigot. IMHO, her attitude on this is as daft as Tanker's, who has similarly acted idiotically over this and shot himself in the foot with a Lose/Lose promise to himself just because someone managing this lady Muslim put her on the tills in the food department. The lady Muslim has also shot herself in the foot too by restricting herself to where she can now work in the store.

cynic - 23 Dec 2013 09:45 - 34474 of 81564

confess i have no problem at all with this lady's scruples, and indeed i have come across it myself ..... it causes no particular inconvenience, any more than if there is a sub-18 on the till who also cannot put through alcohol ..... is that any more silly?

that said, you could ask if a strict muslim should travel in a taxi or aircraft where perhaps someone has been sitting and actually consuming alcohol or pork
i'ld be genuinely interested to learn how the line is drawn and why

by the way, i think calling this lady a bigot is far-fetched indeed

You surely don't believe Vince Cable. He is a lefty in disguise.

MaxK - 23 Dec 2013 10:08 - 34476 of 81564

Cable's a feckin eejit!

Fred1new - 23 Dec 2013 10:23 - 34477 of 81564

Max.

But alongside his coalition "colleagues" he seems a genius.

Interesting, to read the normally right winged press beginning to slam into the Con artists Cameron and Osborne.

Everything Wavey Dave does adds validity to Fauxpage.

M&S seemed to have a reasonable policy with the staff they employ. As a TT I would not like to touch a drop of alcohol.

Hic!

goldfinger - 23 Dec 2013 10:27 - 34478 of 81564

So will it be acceptable for me to ask the cashier what religion they are and if they reply 'muslim' to say 'sorry I don't want you to serve me' and go to another checkout just because I've bought a packet of scratchings?

(knicked this from advfn but its a good point)

Haystack - 23 Dec 2013 10:40 - 34479 of 81564

When I had my company in the City, a cafe was taken over by a Muslim and his wife. He stopped doing bacon and sausages and was bust in 6 months. The word spread quickly an no one went there for breakfast any more and no take away bacon or sausage sandwiches.

ExecLine - 23 Dec 2013 10:43 - 34480 of 81564

Sorted.

Now Marks and Spencer has backtracked and said that Muslim staff who did not want to handle these products would not man tills and would work in other roles such as in clothing or in the bakery.

The issue was revealed after customers at a London branch of Marks and Spencer were told they would have to use another till because the assistant would not be able to serve them pork or alcohol.

At the time Marks and Spencer said staff could refuse to sell these items, based on their religious beliefs.

and a thought from down here to all you guys elsewhere ......

We shall be raising our glasses to those less fortunate than ourselves, to those who live a life of bleak solitude, loneliness and desperation, or Northerners as they are known here

Fuck off you Southern Puff :?O)

Fred1new - 23 Dec 2013 10:51 - 34483 of 81564

GF,

I think it daft, but prepared to accept my own and others daftness.

But, still think in M&S organisations the size of operation makes the choice they make sensible and doesn't effect their working.

However, I think the lady concerned should check the rules and regulations and interpretation of the chosen religion and been explicit at the time of employment.

Perhaps, she will review her "stances".

I know some UKIPpers and Cons change allegiances to other parties and "Christians" become atheists, even known the reverse happen.

2517GEORGE - 23 Dec 2013 11:32 - 34484 of 81564

I find it strange that the lady concerned chose to work for a company that sells alcohol and pork.

Thank you so much for those seasonal greetings, and in return we offer you this:

Karren Brady rebuffs SIX offers of safe Tory seats for 2015 election

Karren Brady, a star of the BBC’s Apprentice series, has been offered six safe seats to fight at the next election for the Conservatives.

By Christopher Hope, Senior Political Correspondent

6:00AM GMT 23 Dec 2013

Karren Brady, a star of the BBC’s Apprentice series, has been offered six safe seats to fight at the next election for the Conservatives.

However she has rebuffed them all and insisted that she has to concentrate on her business interests.

The number of opportunities is being seen as a sign of the desperation that the Tories have to persuade the high profile businesswoman to become a Tory MP.

Miss Brady is already well-known in the Conservative party, and has taken on the role of the party’s small business ambassador. She introduced George Osborne, the Chancellor at the party’s annual conference

A source close to Miss Brady said: “Karren found all the approaches very flattering, but she is very busy with West Ham and other work and has no plans for a professional career in politics".

Ms Brady is accustomed to winning - why would she join a party about to be obliterated?

Conservative chairman Grant Shapps said Mr Cable was like a "slightly rude" uncle at Christmas who was tolerated.

Fred1new - 23 Dec 2013 16:08 - 34491 of 81564

I thought he was being honest which I don't think Shapps is use to in the circles he moves.

cynic - 23 Dec 2013 16:25 - 34492 of 81564

very simple - not all muslims choose to follow the diktats of their religion, any more than jews do or catholics or any other religion
for example, do you show tolerance to others?
no need to answer yourself, as "very clearly not" is self-apparent from your numerous posts here
