So II is promoting Packaging Automation. They certainly need promoting as there is no news article for the last 3 months on their site! But hey, what's this, three articles on packtalk and all in the last 10 months! Invited to discussion group with Dept of Environment; a user application story; conversion to handle liquids. lol! rofl! Glad we have some entertainment on this channel!

The other really funny thing was Charles1952. pth knows these things and he is quite clearly the same guy - just look at the phraseology and formatting. he knows nobody takes any serious notice of him so he talks to himself. First step to madness, they say! But we now know more about him - christian name Charles and 53 years old.

Moving on to serious matters. Whither the sp this week? At least evens chance of an RNS on a deal with the first ASDA supplier. The situation appears to be that two of the three ASDA supplier trials have been completed - the question is therefore whether the 12 month exclusivity deal starts from the completion of the third trial or from the first firm order from a supplier. My bet would be on the latter. Mind, I have spent my life being a 'marginal failure': never getting anything absolutely right! For instance, forecast the labour majority as 64 and it came out at 66 - blast those 19 Crawley voters who voted the wrong way!

RF sealing has been around since 1945 see the link below -

http://www.devicelink.com/mddi/archive/99/12/003.html

As you can read from the article at that time CPET could not be RF sealed - which is where SEO have found a way - my concern is over its quality control acceptance capability and has the change from from material spec changes ?

We must not forget that RF sealing has been around for years SEO is using it for the first time for tray lidding. The packing industry appears to be moving on in the clamshell and blister pack arena to UV sealants.

Product Overview

INTRODUCING --- the NEWEST patent pending SIMPL-TRACK workstation, provided by PARTNER PAK INC, that will change your thinking about clamshell package sealing production. This innovative automated workstation incorporates up to 4-tracks of motorized conveyor belt that carries your package under a top SIMPL-COATER applying SIMPL- SEALANT UV Adhesive to your clamshell. The package, containing card & product, now leads to an air knife thus closing the clamshell lid and continuing to the pressure roller then transfers to the SIMPL-SEAL UV Sealing tunnel for fast completed production.
The Simpl-Seal II PET Clamshells + Card&Blister UV Sealing system is designed to immediately increase your productivity and simplify the entire PET, RPET, PLA or PVC Clamshell sealing process and now also the Card & Blister Sealing process. WHEN COMPARED TO OUTDATED AND EXPENSIVE RF, Sonic or Heat sealing machinery, the technologically advanced and patented* Simpl-Seal II UV system is the most efficient and cost effective sealing method available on the market today.
SIMPL-SEAL II Product Accessories
- SIMPL-GRIPPER - Unit allows for 100% conveyor access while exerting pinching force directly to mating surfaces of clamshells that may not have been originally designed to work with the Simpl-Seal System
- PRESSURE ROLLER - Applies pressure to top of clamshell or card during Sealing Process
- SIMPL-COATER II - Stand alone State-of-the-Art adhesive coating system applies exact amount of Simpl-Sealant to blisters and packages saving time, eliminating waste and increasing throughput for the contract package line.

UV Cure Adhesives for Sealing
PLASTIC CLAMSHELLS and BLISTERS
Eliminate heat/RF sealing with DYMAX UV cure adhesives for clamshells and blisters. DYMAX adhesives cure in seconds to form structural bonds to PVC, PET, APET, and RPET. Benefits include reduced tooling and capital costs, higher production rates, and lower set-up costs. Production systems include semi-automated dispense-type units and separate dispense, roll coat and stand-alone curing units.

http://www.dymax.com/products/plastic/packaging.asp

Another point of the post from above is that it appears that to get the best results from RF sealing special films are required that suit RF sealing this would no doubt raise cost.
An APET film needs to have consistent RF sealability characteristics across a broad range of RF sealing equipment when used on RF sealing equipment is this one of the technical difficulties being found in the trials if trying to use RF sealing on standard APET and CPET ?

All pointers to the limited potential nowadays of RF sealing in other areas its a has been in quite a few industries which limits the rampability of posting figures on other industries (some people love to go off on a tangent and state RF sealing is new and going to take over the world of packing) . We should therefore not think RF sealing is new or think that its not supplied by many many companies we should remember that Stanelco is using it as a speciality for tray lidding on CPET microwavable trays so far an into that fray walks Mr Laser sealing Mid April 2005 and a fightback by the traditional heat sealers. UV cure sealants where does that lead us more food for thought on any potential expansion by SEO out of the tray lidding applications with old technology RF sealing.

For more information on UV Cure Sealents and indeed new EB cure sealants have a read good background info

Tony Ruane, Technical Manager, Meal Solutions category at ASDA said:

'This is a first to market for ASDA - real innovation. This could well turn out
to be the biggest thing in packaging for years. The benefits for both the
environment, our customers and suppliers from this technology are far reaching.
The potential for the use of Stanelco's technology grows every time we look at
it. Every visit to both stores and suppliers identifies new areas and ways in
which the technology can be used. We are looking forward to working with
Stanelco.'

it's worth re posting what asda had to say about seo's tehnology. the more times you read it the better it gets!!the increase in posting by the tit and friends smells of panic.

andysmith - 09 May 2005 08:17 - 3647 of 27111

To me Bos, this is the most important statement on here, not SEO, not SEO followers, not derampers etc etc, its Asda themselves.

bhunt1910 - 09 May 2005 08:30 - 3648 of 27111

Morning all - I see the weekend brought about an amazing anount of posts - barely any of them relevant with some "intersting" (!!) posts from some "neubies"(??).

Dear, dear - what next.

Morning Bos, eric, andy, GF and the rest of the regulars - what a lovely morning it is, clear blue skies - a bit chilly though = lets hope SEO can improve things as the day develops.

Bos, can you post the date the ASDA comment was made?
Thanks in advance and yes that sounds fantastic.

insiderinside - 09 May 2005 09:59 - 3650 of 27111

Some more information on whats happening in the tray lidding market -

Cyrovac ( http://www.sealedair.com/eu/en/library/casehist/grampian.html ) were/are also developing Laser sealing rumour has it. Why not ? Laser sealing is so flexible with no tooling. Any kind of thermal (RF/Heat) sealing still needs die cutters to trim hence the long delays in changing line products laser seals then the laser trims the edge programmed pack dimensions and such a quick changeover of product type on the line with no tooling to worry about.

Cryovac also did very well at the recent Flexible Packaging Innovation Showcase 2005.

http://www.flexpack.org/ACHIEV/2005_cfe/2005_innovation_showcase.htm

Cryovac also seem to have taken over the French suppliers for chicken packaging with their own new Darfresh sealing for chicken is that Carrefour ?

http://www.foodproductiondaily.com/news/ng.asp?id=58479

All has to go into the consideration melting pot over future prospects we know Walmart already use the ultra green ultrasonic sealing for clamshell packaging and the like with many companies now potentially doing laser tray lidding what will it all mean ? Will Walmart go to UV cure sealants for Clam and Blister ?

Cryovac also appear to have the red meat market sealed up with their patented technology for double seal fresh meat packing.

Sainsburys ? See below link.

steady poverty....you sound a little too confident...
Bos, do you have a date??

insiderinside - 09 May 2005 12:43 - 3654 of 27111

"The 12-month agreement will commence from the first Monday following two weeks
of further successful trials with three ASDA suppliers. This is expected to be
in April. These commercial trials are in addition to the completed trial
announced on 1 March 2005"

To say in an RNS to the world "expected in April" and to now be in the 2nd week of MAY - means there are potentially serious problems either with retrofitting or with performance - you do not say "hope April" unless your plans were indeed that. I have been saying for some time - WHY ADDITIONAL TRIALS IN THE FIRST PLACE - there are some serious worries in there IMO.

What happens if the trials with THREE ASDA SUPPLIERS cannot be completed successfully ???

-------

Look at the ambigious wording of the AGM statement -

We announced in March that ASDA Stores Ltd (ASDA) would be the first to adopt
GREENSEAL in the UK, anticipating several hundred machines to be adapted to use
the technology during the first year at the earlier of the completion of three
further trials with ASDA suppliers or the signing of the first commercial order.
The first of these trials nears completion at Youngs Bluecrest, a leading ASDA
supplier.

Feedback from ASDA continues to be very encouraging. As a result of previous
successful ASDA trials using the GREENSEAL technology to seal lids on ready meal
trays, ASDA have extended the trial work to other product areas. Youngs
Bluecrest Seafood Ltd who are an ASDA own label supplier and major brand in
their own right have successfully completed additional trials across a wide
range of products producing results exceeding expectations and in turn leading
to other products in ASDA brand packs on the shelves today. These results
further demonstrate the growing number of benefits to ASDA, its suppliers and
consumers alike.

The first paragraph confirms that the first trial is not complete - the words - "NEARS COMPLETION".

The 2nd paragraph is showing that Youngs have done extra tests on other products - it does not state that the ADDITIONAL TRIALS in the first paragraph as defined in the Asda agreement are finished - just some additional trials Youngs have done.

Clever wording - SP SP SP IN IN IN

superrod - 09 May 2005 12:56 - 3655 of 27111

did you ignore this bit?
