How to profit from Betting Exchanges (BEX)

How would you like to trade a market where you get large regular price swings every 10 minutes in the afternoon, seven days a week. A
market where all prices are set purely by supply and demand, few transaction costs, no middle men and you only pay commission if you win? Where you can freely act as a market maker and where you have direct market access and where you can create a spread for others to take?

Betfair has revolutionised the betting market and created an open platform for exchanging risk on sports events. This market is now viewed much more like a traditional financial risk market than an old fashioned betting market. Smart users have realised that there are huge opportunities on Betfair because they can buy and sell risk in much the same way they would in a normal financial market but without the burden of cost or the restricted access that is usually associated with traditional financial markets.

I'm in for England to win and with a biggish bet too.

I mean, let's face it, etc, etc. ;-)

WOODIE - 03 Sep 2005 12:08 - 4331 of 10502

fund agree with you but you have got to spread the risk in on italy as well, anyone thinking of betting on england go to william hill or vc bet as they are offering 4/9 at the moment which is better then the exchanges.

Anyone trading the cricket C&G final?

currently deliberating whether to lay off having backed Hampshire - any thoughts?

bakko - 03 Sep 2005 12:16 - 4333 of 10502

Agree with you guys on good value but only got 1.41. Will drip feed and average up on this as long as England doesnt score a quick goal.

Italy look good value too but then again they are in pole position and can afford to slip up.

Since the sat picture delay has been mentioned I thought I'd share with you all that a mate of mine was providing live commentary on several ManU games last season on his mobile phone to an "illegal bookmaking syndicate" in Hong Kong. Even though there's a delay on the phone, the 2 second or so gain on the pictures was enough for the syndicate to profit handsomely over the mug punters that they were dealing with.

My mate wasn't too generous in offering me with the full details but I know he made more than enough to pay for the season ticket a few times over! The commentary only lasted for half a dozen games so I assumed that the syndicate got taken out!

Fundamentalist - 03 Sep 2005 13:35 - 4339 of 10502

woodie

i have nicked in and out a few times laying bristol city and will continue to do so despite colchester down to 10 men - amazed with 20 mins to go the draw is still odds against despite bristol city not looking like they have any idea how to score

Scripophilist - 03 Sep 2005 14:21 - 4340 of 10502

The pattern of pre match trading on England has been interesting. I have turned quite a few thousand already and am nicely green for little risk. Going to keep an eye on things in the next hour and see if some more opportunities pop up but the at the moment Englands price looks to come in more and lots of people laying Wales and the draw.

Scripophilist - 03 Sep 2005 14:57 - 4341 of 10502

If you are quick there is some value in the HT/FT market to lay in several areas. Most realistic options are not going to happen and the prices are quite generous. I've taken some of it by laying unusual combinations.

WOODIE - 03 Sep 2005 15:07 - 4342 of 10502

thanks scrip i was to late to have a look the 2.45 at hay was 10 mins behind time.

DocProc - 03 Sep 2005 15:59 - 4343 of 10502

Tosh has got the Welsh doing a great marking job on England's forwards, to the extent that Rooney hasn't seen very much of the game. No doubt he will ask them to keep this up in the 2nd half.

Thanks to Robinson's fine save, Wales have NOT gone in with a 1-0 half-time lead.

Q. How do I feel about my bet?
A. Nervous - but still confident. Like what you do, sorta kinda.

Looking forward to Scrip's course, of course, on the 29th. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong. When I read him say, "I have turned quite a few thousand already and am nicely green for little risk," then I feel it's probably to do with my 'risk and money management'.

Let's see what the 2nd half brings.....

Fundamentalist - 03 Sep 2005 16:04 - 4344 of 10502

Been out for the first half - see its still 0-0, amazed England are still as short as 1.57

Scripophilist - 03 Sep 2005 16:08 - 4345 of 10502

It this match you would have expected to see Wales come in little, England drift a little and the draw come in quite a bit.

In the second half you would expect England to start drifting like a barge down the Thames. I think the crossover is around 60 mins or so.

England have not imposed themselves and to be honest haven't really created tham many chances.

Fundamentalist - 03 Sep 2005 16:10 - 4346 of 10502

Scrip

you must be a mind reader - iwas just going to ask you to predict the crossover point. dont forget - this is the most over-rated collection of 11 footballers with possibly the worst manager

Looks like i got out of the cricket at the right time, just wish id been around to take advantage of the swing the other way

Scripophilist - 03 Sep 2005 16:12 - 4347 of 10502

Open the beers lads!

Fundamentalist - 03 Sep 2005 16:13 - 4348 of 10502

Another "lucky Chelsea goal" lol - well done all England backers

Scripophilist - 03 Sep 2005 16:15 - 4349 of 10502

They all count, thank goodness. Nice 30% chunk there but England made us sweat.

Living in Hampshire have been keeping an eye on the Cricket but that is all. Looks a good batting wicket!
