How to profit from Betting Exchanges (BEX)

How would you like to trade a market where you get large regular price swings every 10 minutes in the afternoon, seven days a week. A
market where all prices are set purely by supply and demand, few transaction costs, no middle men and you only pay commission if you win? Where you can freely act as a market maker and where you have direct market access and where you can create a spread for others to take?

Betfair has revolutionised the betting market and created an open platform for exchanging risk on sports events. This market is now viewed much more like a traditional financial risk market than an old fashioned betting market. Smart users have realised that there are huge opportunities on Betfair because they can buy and sell risk in much the same way they would in a normal financial market but without the burden of cost or the restricted access that is usually associated with traditional financial markets.

Goal scoring this year in the premiership has been very slow at around an average of 2.00 goals a game. Historically well below the norm. I am working on a lucky league this year which aims to indentify potential shocks by pricing teams that have played well but not scored well and vice versa. No idea what will come from it but just playing and documenting for this year.

fundy, I am not sure if pth is into trading per se at the moment. But should be from the 30th September for sure!

then ignore my drunken ramblings lol! another disciple waiting to happen! currently finishing off a fabulous evening with a very decent cognac that is wasted on me :-) nice though it is.

Will try to look at the footie prices tomorrow and add some coherent comments

ptholden - 16 Sep 2005 23:31 - 4677 of 10502

Steve,

I am sure what you say is probably correct from a trading perspective, but this is just a punt on a feeling rather than disciplined trading. I am sure Scrip will knock that out of me during the course!

Problem with laying Chelsea is that (as I see it) the return would be so much smaller or I would have to risk more. I may be able to trade my way out if Chelsea were to take the lead, but to be honest not too sure how to do that effectively at the moment, so sticking with the smaller 'back' bet and hoping for the best.

Also playing golf tomorrow, which complicates matters slightly, but have left an unmatched lay bet against Charlton at lower odds in the event that they manage to take the lead at some point.

PTH

fair enough - 1 thing - if Charlton do take the lead the market will be suspended and all pending bets cancelled hence this bet will not get filled whatever happens

ps: good luck on the golf course

Speaking of bets, PTH - cheers for yet ANOTHER pay day on the course at The Craythorne today, mate..............

Steve is right from the perspective of chance of success a lay draw or Chelsea would give you multiple profit opportunities but if you are playing golf then that sort of scuppers it.

I finally got out this week for a quick round at a local course. First time in nearly two years I have played on a championship course.

Only played nine holes to see how I stood up to things but really enjoyed it, played well and no problems to speak of. Managed to eagle the last hole which was a par five mainly thanks to a crazy drive off the tee. Probably the longest and most accurate drive I have ever hit, I had to pinch myself. Left myself around 150 to play to the green and landed the ball a few feet from the hole. Have booked in a round for next week already. Just waiting for the inevitable reversion to mean!!

Doc Proc and pth..

You have internal emails

Fundamentalist - 17 Sep 2005 12:30 - 4683 of 10502

Is it just me or have others lost the menu on the lefthand side of the main betfair screen

Scripophilist - 17 Sep 2005 13:06 - 4684 of 10502

Just you, mine is fine.

Piptrader - 17 Sep 2005 13:07 - 4685 of 10502

Fundy - mine's fine at the moment, but it frequently goes awol.

Same with the settings - constantly having to re-do and re-save them.

DocProc - 17 Sep 2005 13:14 - 4686 of 10502

Bakko

Thanks and much appreciated.

WOODIE - 17 Sep 2005 16:16 - 4692 of 10502

just in time scrip crespo just scored

ptholden - 17 Sep 2005 16:51 - 4693 of 10502

Well, that didn't work out too well. Should have listened to the advice from the experts. Steve, you were right about the unmatched lay bet, it had lapsed for some reason, not that it would have made any difference. Fortunately, my bet was but a tiddler so no harm done. Best I get on this course quick!!

Scrip

Congrats on the Eagle, hopefully we will see you at the MAM tournament next year and see more of the same.

Markus

What are you doing on this thread, you know you don't understand anything more complicated than 2+2. Oh, and your pay day was all of 50p, but I whooped your ass, so try and keep things in perspective.....................loser!! lol
