I can remember how the "new technological age" was heralded by the politicians and the media.

The advances in industrial engineering.

The reduction is heavy manual work and hours needed to accomplish "projects".

That was the 50s-60s-70s and so on.

I do not see why work is so lauded by many, who wouldn't know whats a many "manual worker's" day actually consist of, or the "miserable forms of work" of some of those in the "lower strata" of society.

More often than not those who lord it over others owe their "positions",or own standard of living, more to inherited wealth or the opportunity is availed them than their ability.

The other thing is, while I can see the necessity to "provide" for lean years by producing more than immediately necessary when conditions are favourable, overproduction especially of "glitter" or "marketable goods produce which have no intrinsic value in themselves" and are produced to gain a monetary advantage seem a daft driver of an "economy". It seems to only to increase the greed and consequential divisions of a society.

If they had to go out on Building Sites like I have in the past 10 years not as a manual worker but part of the management team just to direct things in freezing cold blustering pis-ing it down weather they would know about it.
No chance of getting to 60 never mind 65 in those type of jobs.

And your second point yep consumables which are supposed to enrich ones life but a dammed good book would be far better and a fraction of the cost.

To me knowledge is far superior than material effects.

This age of the X factor, strictly, Gay chat hosts (nothing against Gays its supposed to be fashion) 3 for 2 at the supermarket etc etc is superficial carp to me.

True George me included. I had to go to school in wellingtons in the summer for 5 years my family were that poor. But my father was in full time work and had a good manual job as a pattern maker.

The point im trying to make is that their is one or two on this thread who havent had to scrape by and have no idea how hard it is for some of the poor especially today.

They associate them with SKY TV, Cigs, drinking beer and drugs which couldnt be further from the truth for most poor people. They listen to silly documentaries on TV and read right wing clap trap in the news papers.

i wouldn't call pattern making manual, let alone unskilled
average pay nowadays in that role is £18/26,000 pa, presumably based well north of watford, so you'll get more for your money there

Actually, cyners, having watched my own children go through the education system in recent years, I think the standard of teaching has improved drastically since I rebelled against the nuns who taught me.

But, I do agree, exams have been dumbed down and the use of modules only makes things worse.

i wasn't complaining about the teachers per se, but i certainly think there is a tendency to set pupil aspiration too low

And too many of them are useless, form ticking nonentities.

Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence has called the theft and publication of nude photos of her a “sex crime” in the actor’s first public comments since dozens of nude celebrity photos werestolen by hackers.

“It is not a scandal. It is a sex crime,” Lawrence told Vanity Fair contributing editor Sam Kashner in an interview to promote new movie Serena. “It is a sexual violation. It’s disgusting.”

“The law needs to be changed, and we need to change. That’s why these websites are responsible. Just the fact that somebody can be sexually exploited and violated, and the first thought that crosses somebody’s mind is to make a profit from it. It’s so beyond me. I just can’t imagine being that detached from humanity. I can’t imagine being that thoughtless and careless and so empty inside.”

Nude photos of Lawrence were stolen from the actor’s Apple iCloud account and published by hackers on the website 4chan, along with naked photos of around 100 other female celebrities.
