Lincoln fancies well drawn
THE three market leaders Fremen, Alkaadem and Desert Opal are all favourably drawn in Saturday's Lincoln if trainers' opinions and recent trends are any guide.
With low numbers having won the last five runnings of the Freephone Stanleybet-sponsored event, single figure stalls were quickly snapped up in Thursday's draw which was conducted by locally-born opera star Lesley Garrett.
Fremen, cut to 6-1 favourite from 8-1 by the sponsors, was 11th out of the hat and Sir Michael Stoute's travelling headlad Jimmy Scott had no hesitation in plumping for stall 10, the lowest one available to him at the time.
"I'm very happy with that, and I hope the wind continues to dry out the ground," he said.
The well-fancied Alkaadhem fared even better, as his was the sixth number to be called and Patrick McKeown, representing Marcus Tregoning, settled for stall five.
In fact, the representatives of the first 12 horses to be picked by Garrett went for stalls one to 12 with last year's Cambridgeshire winner Chivalry having the spot in stall one.
The only slight dissenter was Bryan McMahon as his El Coto was the fifth horse out of the bag, but he shunned a single-figure number to go for stall 11.
"I walked the course this morning and thought that the best ground is in the middle," he said.
However, Richard Fahey reckoned the better ground was up the far side and he chose the lowest available for bottom weight Dark Charm (stall 12).
"From the mile to the six, the best ground is on the far side, after that it's all very similar," he said.
Mark Tompkins, whose Babodana will carry top weight, said: "I didn't want the middle. Ideally I wanted 1 to 8, but failing that I wanted to be high."
As it turned out he had no real option as his horse was last of the 24 to be drawn and he had to settle for 23, the only stall available.
Pablo, who won from stall 6 in 2003, looks to face a stiffer task this year as he was late out of the hat and Geoff Snook, representing Barry Hills, had little option but togo for stall 21.
However, trainers of the high-draw horses had some crumbs of comfort, for the one confirmed front-runner in the race, Norton, trained by Terry Mills, will come out of stall 17, which means that there will be plenty of pace on the stands' side.

50 ew on Flighty Fellow please.
Anybody seen any linctus in the first aid box?
If not then a large brandy will do.
The Doc said I had a virus which is incurable so no antibiotics so I just have to suffer and take lots of patent recipes.
I think getting drunk might be the answer. I've emailed MacAfee and it's not w32/Netsky.

Have you heard the one about the convent girl and the
flighty fellow who were friends with 'our Teddy', both were
fre(e)men and in love with the said girl, so it was
tough (luck in) love for both of them,
when the convent girl after some blue sky thinking decided
she would really like a ring with a desert opal stone that
neither could afford....
((Ok boredom brings out desparate poetic aspirations...))
