How to profit from Betting Exchanges (BEX)

How would you like to trade a market where you get large regular price swings every 10 minutes in the afternoon, seven days a week. A
market where all prices are set purely by supply and demand, few transaction costs, no middle men and you only pay commission if you win? Where you can freely act as a market maker and where you have direct market access and where you can create a spread for others to take?

Betfair has revolutionised the betting market and created an open platform for exchanging risk on sports events. This market is now viewed much more like a traditional financial risk market than an old fashioned betting market. Smart users have realised that there are huge opportunities on Betfair because they can buy and sell risk in much the same way they would in a normal financial market but without the burden of cost or the restricted access that is usually associated with traditional financial markets.

Also,

dont think the price will go below 1.33 before Pakistan bat again - would expect the draw to remain the same till then and pakistans price to grow and grow

Theyre saying its gonna be a cold winter in all the f/cast

Where are you in Essex - used to live on the Herts/Essex border

Flintoff tried to hit Akhtars loosener out of the park and holed out to deep midwicket

WOODIE - 14 Nov 2005 07:09 - 5741 of 10502

I see Persimmon made a bid for your old Co. Steve.

Fundamentalist - 14 Nov 2005 16:18 - 5744 of 10502

Hi john

As i think i mentioned friday, its been coming for a while. Whilst the price is relatively high, from what i understand Persimmon are really only buying the landbank and will strip out nearly all the overhead costs (and theres a lot to be stripped out!!!). Landbank is mixed but does have a couple of gems and has always been a good geographical fit for Persimmon

Harlosh - 14 Nov 2005 16:24 - 5745 of 10502

Its done wonders for PSN's share price today. I had them on my watchlist as a possible trade but missed the boat now I think.

Remember to keep an eye on REX. If it breaks and holds 530 it should fly.

Up till 2.45am this morning (I know - tautology!) glued to the tennis (Pierce v Mauresmo). What a fantastic opportunity to trade with virtually every point creating large movements in the prices. Though I'm not up to to the standard of skill of you guys out there (I just know I'm not) I managed to green up quite nicely on relatively modest stakes (still feeling my way).
I know of no other market with such wild fluctuations in such short time spans. Even opport
unities to break serve meant a big change.
I'll be there again, I think!

Fundamentalist - 14 Nov 2005 18:31 - 5748 of 10502

Schiff

welcome and well done - sounds like you finished your trading just before i was getting up for the cricket!!!

Yes the tennis can create huge swings and almost always has very good liquidity - only bit of advice would be to steer clear of backing favs

schiff - 15 Nov 2005 00:22 - 5749 of 10502

Thanks for that Fundamentalist - most of my bets were backing Mauresmo who was during most of the match the outsider. Then laying to cover when her odds shortened following threats to Pierce's position. So it looks as if my gut instincts about how to go about it were on the right lines!

WOODIE - 15 Nov 2005 06:30 - 5750 of 10502

looks like the cricket is heading for a draw.

Fundamentalist - 15 Nov 2005 09:17 - 5751 of 10502

Woodie

the new ball has changed that outlook significantly - 1 more wicket and were into a very weak tail - just a shame the cheating 3rd umpire didnt give Butt run out.

If you look at all 3 innings so far, the side batting has started very well but not made as big a score as they could have done.

Were still only on day 4 and the range of prices on all 3 results has been huge - a great match for trading against the obvious:

Pakistan 2.54-21.0
England 1.35 -16.0
Draw 1.73 - 6.8

Fundamentalist - 15 Nov 2005 09:17 - 5752 of 10502

Butts gone and the game is now Englands to win

WOODIE - 15 Nov 2005 10:34 - 5753 of 10502

fundy sorry for late reply tried to get matched at 2.4 just after my early posts but did not get matched went out just after 8 only got back cancelled order bsfore i went tempted to back draw at over 6/1

WOODIE - 15 Nov 2005 10:43 - 5754 of 10502

take it all back draw looks unlikely now

Fundamentalist - 15 Nov 2005 11:03 - 5755 of 10502

Woodie

been laying the draw for all i can this am and its just paid off big time - have just greened it off at the cost of a few quid at 110

Look at the range of prices on each result, this is pretty common in cricket, always think twice before backing the favourite/short price too early in a cricket match - the contrarian approach is far more profitable

Tempted to lay England at start of their innings as cant see the price shortening much and Trecothicks early wicket will send the price soaring - however going to try and sit on my hands as have a nice green book (both on betfair and the spread market)
