fred's comment actually highlights the sort of problems encountered when trying to formulate legislation

i certainly agree with the concept that to benefit from free health (or housing or unemployment or child benefits), then one has to have contributed to the system
i also concur with the concept that an immigrant would have had to contribute for a certain minimum period to qualify - to prevent short stay, milk the system and then clear out once more

with regard to health, it is perhaps not so difficult to grant exemptions in the event of "critical emergency" ..... however, it is asking for disaster if legislation is drafted intentionally with many grey areas; it's bad enough when that is not the intent at all!

"reasonableness" in legislation is also far too vague

work-related injuries and the treatment for them could surely be covered by the company's insurance where there is a shortfall between the employee's entitlement and benefit claimable

Labour say they will stop nom doms. The BBC is gleefully showing an interview with Ed Balls from two months ago. He says that there is no point in stopping it as it is unlikely to raise any money and would most probably cost the UK money.

Another few questions:

Does Eire count as overseas for non-doms?

Do trusts set up in Eire benefit from ngn-dom arrangements?

Does Gideon gain from such benefits?.

trusts are trusts and the sponsor cannot interfere with their running
trusts also have to be run for the benefit of the ultimate beneficiary

Anyone else on here like figs?

Did you know that every fig has a decomposed DEAD WASP stuck inside it?

Figs are technically inverted flowers that store their pollen inside the fruits. As the female wasp slides through the narrow passage in the fig, her wings are ripped off and while she is unsuccessful in laying her eggs, she successfully pollinates the female flower. The now flightless female wasp dies inside the fig, where special enzymes break down her carcass into protein.

The fig basically digests the dead insect, making it part of the resulting ripened fruit. The special relationship, which biologists call an "obligate mutualism", has taken place unchanged for the past 34 million years.

There are 900 species of fig wasps, and each is responsible for pollinating one or two species of fig plant. Although neither the fig tree nor the wasp could reproduce without this deadly cycle, knowing vegetarians and vegans still rule the fruit out of their diet. In some countries, the consumption of insects is a common practice, since they're an excellent source of affordable protein. However some people aren't quite ready to tuck into critters for their lunch.

Canned mushrooms contain maggots. They just can't keep 'em out!

We have been invaded!

Giant Spanish slugs, which grow to six inches long, are immune to poison and are thriving following recent mild winters, are believed to have landed in the UK - most possibly coming in on imported salad and plants. They have spread from the Kent coast and slithered as far as London and East Anglia.

These voracious light brown predators eat beetles, snails, slugs and dog waste, as well as dead animals and crops.

Expert Dr Ian Bedford said: “We must kill them as they reproduce so rapidly. They make so much slime, they have no predators. An infestation will be devastating.”

He explained, that a single slug has sex with itself and can cause an infestation as it produces and fertilises 400 of its own eggs a year, twice that of UK varieties.

The best way to kill them, is to drown them in a bucket of soapy water. They have an extra layer of slime and so squashing them underfoot, although killing them, creates yet another problem. Don't just bung them down the loo as they are highly likely to survive the journey to the sewage works and climb out the other end.

I find that comment from Fallon on back stabbing is interesting, especially when coming from a party famous for backstabbing and having a cabinet, which almost to a man, stabbed "Maggie" in the back as a PM, and then scrambling for her job.
