Israeli Gaza conflict?????? (GAZA)

Fred1new - 06 Jan 2009 19:21

Will this increase or decrease the likelihood of terrorist actions in America, Europe and the rest of the world?

If you were a member of a family murdered in this conflict, would you be seeking revenge?

Should Tzipi Livni and Ehud Olmert, be tried for war crimes if or when this conflict comes to an end?

What will the price of oil be in 4 weeks time?

Israel joins UN list of states limiting human rights organizations

UN Human Rights Commissioner Navi Pillay lists Israel along with countries such as Belarus, Zimbabwe, Egypt, Ethiopia and Venezuela.

The statement, issued on Wednesday by UN Human Rights Commissioner Navi Pillay, lists Israel along with countries such as Belarus, Zimbabwe, Egypt, Ethiopia and Venezuela.

Israel was named due to the bill approved by the Ministerial Committee on Legislation six months ago to restrict funding by foreign governments to nonprofit organizations. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu supported the bill throughout most of its formulation. However, he ordered it frozen after Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein said such a law would be struck down by the High Court of Justice.

Although the law never reached the Knesset, Pillay said in her statement: "In Israel, the recently adopted Foreign Funding Law could have a major impact on human rights organizations, subjecting them to rigorous reporting requirements, forcing them to declare foreign financial support in all public communications, and threatening heavy penalties for non-compliance."

Israel is the only democratic country listed in Pillay's statement. The others are all dictatorships or developing countries. Among them is Ethiopia, where human rights groups have been shut down by a law prohibiting foreign funding in excess of 10 percent of a group's budget. She also lists Cambodia, where a law is being promoted that would shutter NGOs whose work is found to "harm national unity, culture, customs and traditions of the Cambodian national society." In Belarus, which is ruled by the dictator Alexander Lukashenko, a law passed in October 2011 criminalizes the acceptance of foreign grants that are outlawed by the legislature.

Last month, Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman instructed the Israeli mission to the United Nations in Geneva to cut ties with the UN Human Rights Commission after member countries in the Human Rights Council voted to establish an international commission of inquiry on the West Bank settlements. A senior source in the Foreign Ministry said Israel's inclusion in Pillay's statement was a direct outcome of Lieberman's move. "This was a mistake and now we see the results," the source said.

Ex-Israeli security chief attacks Netanyahu over Iran
By Tobias Buck in Jerusalem

"The former director of Israel’s internal security service has launched a frontal assault on the Iran policy of Benjamin Netanyahu and Ehud Barak, describing Israel’s current prime minister and defence minister as “messianic” politicians who could not be trusted.

Yuval Diskin, who retired from his high-profile post at the helm of the Shin Bet only last year, told a meeting on Friday: “My major problem is that I have no faith in the current leadership, which must lead us in an event on the scale of war with Iran or a regional war.”

According to an account of the meeting in Haaretz, the Israeli daily, Mr Diskin added: “I don’t believe in either the prime minister or the defence minister. I don’t believe in a leadership that makes decisions based on messianic feelings.”

The harsh comments by Mr Diskin are the latest in a series of open attacks by former security and intelligence officials on the Israeli government over the Iranian nuclear threat.

According to analysts and officials, the criticism suggests that Israel’s defence and security establishment is more reluctant to support military strikes against Iran’s nuclear programme than politicians such as Mr Netanyahu and Mr Barak.”

All the problems in the middle east, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, etc. would be resolved if and if Israel and Palestine would be friends..

I think the two communities can live in peace, like real human. This conflict is costing them, and probably the world, so much.

Disney heiress Abigail disowns her share of family profits in West Bank company

Abigail Disney – filmmaker, philanthropist and great-niece of the legendary animator Walt Disney – has publicly renounced her share of the family profits from an Israeli firm she claims is exploiting "occupied natural resources".

Her decision to donate the profits, as well as funds equal to the value of her shares in the Dead Sea minerals cosmetics firm Ahava, to "groups working to end this illegal exploitation," is a high-profile boost to campaigners against trade with Israeli settlements and companies in the occupied West Bank.

While Ahava's headquarters is in Israel, the company's main factory is in the Jordan Valley settlement of Mitzpe Shalem. The Israeli anti-occupation, non-governmental organisation "Who Profits" has received confirmation from the Israeli military under Freedom of Information legislation that the company is licensed to extract mud from the West Bank section of the Dead Sea coast. Shamrock Holdings, owned by the Disney family, is believed to have an investment worth around $12m in the company.

A statement issued by Ms Disney says this is in "direct contravention" of both the 1907 Hague Convention and the Geneva Convention by exploiting natural resources in occupied territory. Settlements are also considered illegal under international law by most of the international community, including Britain.

Ahava is a well-known Israeli export brand and its skin care products from Dead Sea minerals and mud are also sold in the company's own stores in Germany, Hungary, the Philippines and Singapore.

Ms Disney, 52, said in her statement: "Because of complicated legal and financial constraints I am unable to withdraw my investment at this time but will donate the corpus of the investment as well as the profits accrued to me during the term of my involvement to organisations working to end this illegal exploitation."

BDS campaigners force London Ahava shop to move

from stolen Palestinian natural resources in the occupied West Bank, and are produced in the illegal settlement of Mitzpe Shalem, has been forced to move following a sustained campaign from BDS activists.

A spokeswoman for Shaftesbury PLC, which owns the property that the shop is currently located in, told the Jewish Chronicle: “When Ahava’s lease expires in September, we will not offer them a new one.”
