Thought Id start this one going because its rather dead on this board at the moment and I suppose all my usual muckers are either at the Stella tennis event watching Dim Tim (lose again) or at Henly Regatta eating cucumber sandwiches (they wish,...NOT).
Anyway please feel free to just talk to yourself blast away and let it go on any company or subject you wish. Just wish Id thought of this one before.
cheers GF.

When i wake up Friday morning, will whatever group takes power mean we will no longer be in massive debt. Will it mean we will no longer be in deficit. Will it mean public sector pensions, will now be payable, and not unsustainable. Will it mean our near total £4.58 trillion debt will have vanished into thin air and all our problems will have been solved. Will it mean that our manufacturing sector, has now returned home from China and the east. And the large state and it's aimless expendicture which has caused this has just disapeared.
I suspect that come Friday morning, nothing will have changed, and our spiral down will continue as usually most empires do.I suspect that the causes of GBs demise are ingrained, along with it's politics. You don't have democracy, you have appointments, And the shambles of a so called election every 5 year or so. Where nothing changes, and the PTB, continue on their merry way. That is untill the natural laws create economic collapse.
PS Whats the betting that Boris, will be pushed as the next priminster.

Best odds next PM
Ed evens
Cam 19/20
Best odds next government
Lab minority 2/1
Con/Lib coalition 11/4
Con minority 5/1
Lab/Lib coalition 7/1
So the bookies reckon a Labour minority with Cameron as Prime Minister :-)

It was interesting listening to the Cabinet Secretary on Daily Politics..Cameron doesn't need to go to the Queen as he is already PM. If he gets the most seats, he can legally just carry on. He can then present his Queen's speech etc. All the Cabinet Ministers will still be in post even if they lose their seats. The same applies, even if Cameron gets the least seats.
Yep very interesting.
What happens if he wins the most seats but can't get enough support to get an overall majority but Labour can but tell the SNP to p*ss off and decide they do not wish to form a government.
Do the Conservatives have to stay in power by default or is it off to the polls we go again next month ?

Cameron stays in government. The only thing that can cause a new election is a vote of no confidence and no other party willing to be the government. Interestingly, if we have a new election in November, we will be stuck with elections in November as the government lasts 5 years from the election date.

Lol that's a stupid scenario.
What if the others just voted through amendments for all the Conservative bills but didn't call for a vote of no confidence ?
Does he and his government have to stay the full 5 years ?

Apparently there's an Erection on today . I,m surprised no ones mentioned it at all on here . We could have charts , opinion polls and the like , but no same old topics . Do I have to do everything around here .

Dilbert,
Fixed term 5-year parliaments were introduced shortly after the last election. The intention was to prevent governments calling snap elections to coincide with high poll ratings.
As Haystack said, the only scenario under which that can be changed is following a vote of no confidence. But calling a vote is in itself a risk-play, unless you and your party are confident that support for your party has increased and you'll secure sufficient seats to form a workable government in a snap election.
I know that uncertainty isn't generally perceived as being a good thing, but it also means that only centre-ground laws are likely to get passed, as contentious stuff invariably gets voted down. So no mansion tax, no referendum, etc.

Cheers hils but it doesn't answer my point.
What happens if no one feels capable or wants to form the next government ? Do Cam and co have to stay in power by default (in theory for the next five years) or can someone say sod this we'll have to do it all again in June ?

I'm not even gonna bother to vote, Cyners. I've got better things to do, and I can't be doing with all the "Tally Ho, it's British, it's democracy, it's important" cr@p.
My local constituency is one of the safest Tory seats in the country and the outcome is nailed on, but the last MP was a tosser who had his fingers in the till, so I don't feel much like giving the Tories my vote, and I'm certainly not gonna give my X to any of the other parties.

Bit like round here Hils , stick a Labour rosette on a monkey in our constituency and it would win.
Think I'll go for Plaid or UKIP , both full of dickheads but they won't win anyway.

Dilbert,
You make being PM sound like a poisoned chalice. :o)
I'm not sure on the constitution, but, as the incumbent PM, he has responsibilities to the Great British public and it's not really cricket to just 'up and off'.

as you know hilary, i believe very strongly that everyone who can vote, should vote, and i care not for which party
our constituency is also a very safe seat, so i am certainly tempted to vote away from my norm as a pathetic protest, purely because i think both tories and labour are currently too awful, for lack of a better adjective

Hils , it could well be a poisoned chalice unless Cam can do a John Major.
Took Israel 8 weeks to form a government , imagine another 8 weeks having to listen Cam , Ed and the tiddlers slagging each other off 24/7.

Cyners,
Part of living within a democracy means that people have as much right NOT to vote as they have to vote. Once you start forcing people to vote, and castigating them if they don't vote, you're effectively removing their democratic right.
In any event, you should vote for the person or party who you feel deserves your vote. If nobody has done enough to deserve your vote, then there's no shame to be had for not voting.

Well i'm in a marginal , I've had numerous correspondence from Lab and Con . Dave has written to me personally ( well he calls me by my first name ) . Last letter was in pink telling me my vote is crucial to keep Ed out . Surprisingly it gets you thinking a bit more .

It would be interesting to see Cameron presenting a left winged Queen's speech to parliament in order to stay in "power".

MrT
on the basis that you'ld have me expelled from uk as an immigrant?
i don't think so :-)
=======
more seriously .....
my charming and well-spoken driver yesterday was a kashmiri, married with 2 children
the rest of his family still live in kashmir though he had lived in uk since about 2000
his wife, also kashmiri and who he married in kashmir before coming to uk, is a qualified nurse
very clearly, they certainly pay their dues, and secondly, though for obvious reasons i could not ask, i suspect that the wife was "invited" to uk to fill a much needed role
would you have them "expelled"?
if so, why so and if not, why not?
