i think the concept of the balfour declaration was remarkably fair and reasonable for the mentality and political agenda of the times ...... however, it's concepts were clearly not adopted in israel's constitution, and with hindsight, more's the pity ..... of course, an awful lot of water and world-changing events have taken place since 1917

You know, the real problem is the flag wavers such as Tanker and Haystack. They don't get directly involved, but prefer instead to cheer their team on from the sidelines, and to vilify the opposition with shallow propaganda.

Unfortunately there are Haystacks and Tankers in every corner of the world, each urging their team on to greater atrocities and finding ways to defend the indefensible. It is important that there is world opinion for the sides. That will be apparant from this Friday with the application of Palestine to join the UN. The level of world support will be clear when the UN votes about 6 to 1 in favour of Palestine.

surely the UN resolution is to confirm that the palestinians should have their own homeland (gaza for simplicity, and a comparatively modest area) and self rule of some kind and NOT that israel should effectively be dismantled, which is very different from your perpetual rant

The UN resolution is that Palestine should have observer status, similar to the Vatican and some others. It cover the West Bank and Gaza and is effectively 1967 borders. A major advantage for Palestine is that it gives access to the ICC and enables Palestine to have Israel charged with war crimes and crimes against humanity. This would specifically be for the current occupation of the West Bank.

The status gives Palestine a number of benefits, apart from access to the ICC it gives a recognition and official status within the list of member countries. The ICC access is not to be ignored. A guilty verdict imposes a duty of arrest of the listed offenders. While a number of countries such as the US would not arrest Netenyahu or defence minister etc, there are probably around 120 that would.

I thought Netty was already on the "wanted" list.
