Since making his debut at the age of 17 in 1999 Defoe has scored 95 Premiership goals, an average of just over 7. Or put another way he scores a goal every 3 games.

Rooney on the other hand has scored 100 premiership goals since making his debut in 2001, an average of just over 11; however, he scores on average once every 2 games, pretty good for someone who has not historically played as the main front man.

There really is no comparison.

If you want more proof how much Rooney means to his team he has accumulated 88 assists compared to Defoe's 44 during their Premiership careers, not dificult to see who adds more to the team ethic!

Aye but the thing is Tab if you asked Fergie was he worried about as you put it taming him ? you would get short shrift, up to last weekend when Man U destroyed Arsenal, United were mediocre but still managed to get the results and that was down to the performances of Rooney. To say Defoe would be capable of eminating that is questionable. Ask the Mancs they have the privalage of watching Rooney every week! I sincereley hope Defoe continues to progress as a striker as that can only be good for England, but to compare him to Rooney on any level just isn't a question! :o))

Edit - I'm old enough to remember watching Alan Ball, he was the ultimate midfield dynomo, he was part of what was called on the blue side of the Mersey the holy trinity Ball, Kendal and Harvey. Rooney is head and shoulders above him in my humble opinion cause he is even hungrier, now for an Evertonian to say that is not easy trust me! Sadly I'm also old enough to remember the 'Golden Vision' Alex Young, but I digress forgive me :o)

Those England players need to get their act together.....the world cup is nearly upon us....shame about John Terry....I thought he was a good captain....but if you start messing around with other players girlfriends and are in the public eye like he is..........Rooney might be captain one day but being a forward and captain is a difficult balance to make. England are very lucky to have 2 super strikers (not at their peak yet)....just hope Defoe doesn't start missing sitters again (regardless of Tabasco ramping).....England could be on the verge of greatness because on paper the team looks fantastic to me.
