As a symbol of globalisation, the freight train that pulled into a siding at Barking in east London yesterday would take some beating. Fourteen days ago it left Yiwu, a city 200 miles south of Shanghai, loaded with Chinese goods. It crossed seven countries with varying rail gauges, requiring several changes of rolling stock, before travelling through the Channel Tunnel to reach its final destination in Britain.

There is no trade agreement between China and Europe; nor is China in a customs unions with the EU or a member of the single market. Yet 15 European cities are on the so-called new Silk Route, and those who are concerned that Theresa May’s willingness to walk away from the UK’s Brexit negotiations with no deal should keep that train in mind: the goods will find their market, regardless of what politicians in Brussels may do or say.

After they did away with Car Tax Disc , I've just read , DVLA revenue falls 93million since paper car disc scrapped on BBC web . Some one should be sacked for this it was supposed to save money , but doubt they will .

When Maybe goes to beg at Trump's door I hope she takes Larry with her.

Far from being deluded, as a 'Leave' voter I have often stated that there will be hard times ahead after Brexit, of course there will be problems, problems which we as ordinary citizens cannot possibly know.

As for my optimism, I am more optimistic now having heard TM's speech.

The change will affect anyone buying a new car from April this year.

All cars registered before then will come under the current system for life.

The 350E Merc AMG sports estate has now gone, unfortunately (I really did like it). Its emissions were 159g/km. The Road Tax was £185 pa.

My new Volvo XC90 (which I also like very much) is a high value car (over £40k) but the emissions are a bit better at 145g/km. I see the Road Tax was £145 on the invoice.

The New Road Tax at the First Year Rate after April 2017 will be £200 but i've missed that. 3 years subsequent will now cost £480 as against £435. For me this would be a 10.3% increase.

Cars registered after April 1st 2017 will pay a one-off tax charge for the first year, with rates decided by a heavily revised version of the current CO2-based tax band system.

The New Road Tax rules are pretty complicated and it is a bit hard to get your head round them. The adjustments mean most buyers will see their first year tax charge virtually doubled, while only zero-emissions vehicles will get away with paying nothing at all.

From the second year onwards, the CO2 scale becomes irrelevant, as two flat rates will then be applied – a £0 (zero) VED rate for zero-emissions vehicles only, and a flat annual rate of £140 for all other cars.

While cars costing over £40,000 will also be liable for the £140 VED rate from year two, they will also be forced to pay an additional annual ‘supplement’ of £310 for the first five years.

That means expensive £40k+ zero-emissions cars will no longer get away with a free ride, as they’ll have to pay the £310 supplement. Everything else in the £40k+ bracket will pay £450 a year (£310 supplement + £140 flat rate) until that five-year period is over and they revert to the £140 flat rate.

I'm not absolutely sure on this and do hope I've not got that wrong. As I say, it changes completely and is going to be pretty complicated.

They should start wacking diesel cars. Especially German diesel cars..in fact all German cars. You can bet that if you have a car trying to drive into your boot on the motorway, it will be an Audi or BMW. They should come with speed limiters or the drivers should take a medical test first to ensure they have more than half a brain

Buy a vintage car maybe , no tax at all or MOT .

I understand what you say Hays but more people will take a chance on no tax disc to be displayed and that's what happens . Imagine what would happen if 20% of drivers paid no tax , could the system cope with that many fines .
