On Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays we have 'an additional newspaper' but we didn't get it this morning so had to ring the newsagent to complain.

He is very good with his 'service' and brought the missing item to me half an hour ago. Instead of posting it through the letterbox, he rang the bell, so we did a little chatting.

He told me

To his round of 600 customers he only sells 10 'Guardians'.
He does his 'round's cards' by hand and doesn't use a computer or software. He reckons the software alone would cost him £2000 and he simply can't afford it. I disagreed with him on this as it must just be simple 'spreadsheet stuff' and must have been written thousands of times already.
6 weeks ago the wholesaler stopped delivering to the Northampton collection point. because he likes to collect them himself, he now has to drive 15 miles to Milton Keynes to do this.
He has no savings and no prospects of being able to ever retire. He does have 'Whole Life' insurance to protect his family in the event of his death, but nothing else.
His wife works in the local Tesco but has just had to have a new knee. The operation has not gone well and she is still in pain and cannot properly do the physiotherapy adequately well enough or frequently enough. She cannot now help him and their income has dived. Her prognosis does not look good to me as neither does her future with Tesco.
Every year he loses more customers and 'the younger element' now mostly use TV, Facebook and other 'social media' for their news.
I did conclude this particular newsagent was a 'stick in the mud' and he did not want to effect any changes (eg. trade diversification) to his situation.
He is 62 yrs old and I also concluded, that although he had his own special family problems to have to deal with, his 'industry and its associated partners' must be now dying on its feet.

I wondered if it will even last another 5 years. I fear not.

I only read the online newspapers except when I have a flight to catch. Doing the crosswords or sudokus makes the time pass. I receive a local free newspaper. Great for cleaning the windows. As for my knee... don't ask.

under the cons we have had decent rises but it still very poor for those that retired pre april 2016 a pension of £119 a week .its ok if you never saved never bought your home . for those that just spent all their money on cars and hols and rented are the winners those that saved have been trashed big time .
