Thought Id start this one going because its rather dead on this board at the moment and I suppose all my usual muckers are either at the Stella tennis event watching Dim Tim (lose again) or at Henly Regatta eating cucumber sandwiches (they wish,...NOT).
Anyway please feel free to just talk to yourself blast away and let it go on any company or subject you wish. Just wish Id thought of this one before.
cheers GF.

Excellent points, Tanker.
Having proudly started my working life off at 'Europe's biggest power station', situated on the River Trent, and when it was commissioned in 1959, I found it puzzling and sad to see it shut down in 2003, just 44 years later and then completely demolished in 2012.
On full tilt, it used to burn 200 tons of coal per hour, generating 1000MWs per hour and keeping several collieries going.
There were several, even bigger power stations built on the Trent about 50 years ago. I think just a couple of them survive today. I haven't checked up on it, but I think they either import wood pellets or alternatively maybe burn North Sea gas.
In doing all of this, we lost two important industries: Coal and Electricity. We chose to buy it from elsewhere.
Hmmm? Daft or wot?

however, and as you say, these power stations were built 50 years ago
ecological arguments apart, they had probably already seen out their commercially viable life

Is Germany's Green Revolution about to turn black with coal dust?
As the country moves away from nuclear, the builders of coal-fired power stations are moving into action.
When Chancellor Merkel announced the closure of all the country's 17 nuclear reactors by 2022, there were loud cheers from environmentalists.
But less well heard were the cheers

As before, May has to deal with both Brexit sides of her party.
Sturgeon needs to put Indyref2 on a lower shelf and concentrate on running the country.
Corbyn and Momentum have cemented their takeover of the Labour party - the main objective. Defeat for the so called moderates - do they stay or up sticks?
Labour take a 40% share but only manage to be 56 seats behind the Conservatives. Another surge required. Will they achieve it as the gloss on I'm With Jeremy weathers?

77826 - thanks for correcting me on the longevity, though i confess some surprise
imo germany should be roundly condemned, and ditto trump and china (burns horribly sulphurous coal) and japan
however, just because others wish to rush headlong towards ecological oblivion, there is no reason we (UK) should join with them

The last i heard too was China was building a coal fired plant every week.
So to claim that the UK should not join them in the belief that the UK's efforts
will save the planet is rather deluded..the same with the number of vehicles
that keep increasing relentlessly in countries like India and China... but these
eco-warriors like cynic and that ditzy bint lucas would rather see the UK paying
extortionate energy prices just to salve their consciences, and put the uk at
a disadvantage...Because these liberal bleeding heart lefties love nothing better
then to show concern for those around the world before those of their countrymen
and their hatred for the white indigenous population..They call it liberal guilt for
the sins of the Empire...
