thanks Ian, I had recently installed latest Java software - JAva 2 Runtime Environment SE V 1.4.201. I would have expected that, being the latest, would be streaming enabled. Any idea which Plug-In I would need to download for Windows 2000?

Shammy, something else you might want to consider: do you use a firewall? When I had ZoneAlarm installed I couldn't get streaming to work at all. Try disabling it if it is installed on your machine.

My right-hand screen (alas I am only endowed with 2x17" flat monitors) keeps periodically blacking out as if it is switching itself off, and then it comes back 'on'. This happens every few minutes, I've checked the connections which all seem fine. Any ideas??

Velocity, do you run off one graphics card? Have you opened the machine up to check the card is firmly seated? Have you tried switching the screens around on the connectors to see whether it's due to the screen or the base unit. Also can you swap the power supplies round?

Velocity, could be power savings? does the screen have built in power saving? check power save options in control panel.

Having a major security concern at the moment. Have inadvertantly found that I have two printers set up on my machine. One is mine set up as LPT1 default. The other is a printer which I don't have and never have done and is called "Auto HP Deskjet 970CXI on PETER HARRIS" and is set up on a local port called "\\PETERHARRIS\HP970cxi". WTF is this. My name is not Peter Harris and neither do I know anyone by that name. Further, I just sent a print to this printer and it appears to print but obviously not on my printer. Anyone any ideas? Is there somewhere I can find out when this printer was set up on my machine? Has someone got into my machine and has printed stuff off??

Looking at "My Network Places" I seem to have two full directories of stuff as though someone has just transferred their computer to mine??

Are you on a network?
Is it a work network? If so have a look through your co directory for a peterharris. My guess is that the printer is attached to his PC.

If its a personal PC at home have you had it from new?

robber - built it myself about a year ago. Always been at home. Had it on a home network with one other machine which is now defunct. I'm wondering if I set something up about file sharing or whatever which has allowed someone in? Really concerned now. I need to sort this out.

Robb, you seem to be on a network without knowing it. Open a DOS window and type

NET VIEW

and then

PING PETERHARRIS

and report back!

Have you bought a router second-hand or something similar?

It says the folders were created on 11 Sept. How can I find where the f***er got in. I obviously have a hole somewhere that needs plugging.

Kayak - for netview it comes up with one machine \\ROBOFFICE1 which is how I set up this machine for my network. PETERHARRIS is identified as 172.16.172.110
No other IP addresses are shown.

It seems like someone has set up a VPN (virtual private network) with you.

"172.16.172.110 is an IP address reserved for non-routed networks. That means it may be used on any number of private networks and doesn't connect to the internet at large (except, maybe, via application level gateways or NATs). See RFC 1918 Address Allocation for Private Internets."

What is remaining of your network configuration? Do you still have the network card? Do you still have a router or similar? What is connected to what? Was any of it second hand?

Now type IPCONFIG and again note down the IP addresses.

Also type TRACERT PETERHARRIS and copy the results here. You can highlight using the mouse, but don't right click, instead press Return and then paste here as normal.
