How to profit from Betting Exchanges (BEX)

How would you like to trade a market where you get large regular price swings every 10 minutes in the afternoon, seven days a week. A
market where all prices are set purely by supply and demand, few transaction costs, no middle men and you only pay commission if you win? Where you can freely act as a market maker and where you have direct market access and where you can create a spread for others to take?

Betfair has revolutionised the betting market and created an open platform for exchanging risk on sports events. This market is now viewed much more like a traditional financial risk market than an old fashioned betting market. Smart users have realised that there are huge opportunities on Betfair because they can buy and sell risk in much the same way they would in a normal financial market but without the burden of cost or the restricted access that is usually associated with traditional financial markets.

I assume it will be a very slow deterioration in Chelsea's odds now Scrip. Do you agree?

Scripophilist - 02 Feb 2005 20:19 - 868 of 10502

Yes, Don't try and mess with it till later in the match else you will have to wait for ages and it's not worth the risk with only 22% on the table.

Scripophilist - 02 Feb 2005 20:28 - 869 of 10502

ROFLMAO, Cricket has just ended in a dead heat. Level scores on the last ball. Nearly 7m traded a lot on South Africa at short odds.

Harlosh - 02 Feb 2005 20:29 - 870 of 10502

'Only' 22%. I like it. Anyone not yet on Betfair reading that comment should be amazed.

Its still Rocket science all this Greening up/ arbitridge etc.Is there a "IDIOTS GUIDE TO BETFAIR" out there.
I know about the course you do scrip but i need a VERY simple introduction.
Yours,Confused of Bury:-)

cunningham - 02 Feb 2005 20:56 - 872 of 10502

Just going through Scripts slides on probabilitytheory.info, now things are alot clearer. Just greened up on the Chelsea game as a consequence.

bakko - 02 Feb 2005 21:00 - 873 of 10502

Got too engrossed with the cricket so missed out on the start of the footy.
Eng v SA ended in a dead heat so I didn't think I'd get paid but checked account later to see a surprise payout.

Will be looking for some footy action now!

Scripophilist - 02 Feb 2005 21:00 - 874 of 10502

bakko, I have never been in a dead heat so never checked how they are settled. How was the market settled?

Scripophilist - 02 Feb 2005 21:15 - 875 of 10502

Just grabbed some money from Juventus and Sampdoria, Couldn't resist. A little strange as I have no feed from that match.

bakko - 02 Feb 2005 21:18 - 876 of 10502

Scrip,

I'm not too sure how it was settled. I'm a bit confused myself?? Eng ended with 270 for 5 whereas SA finished on 270 for 7 so I would have expected Eng to have won.

I managed to green up during the final 2 overs after scalping both teams throughout the day. I've got a betfair statement as long as my arm for the game so will be checking it out properly later.

Came as a nice surprise when I discovered a positive payout!

Scripophilist - 02 Feb 2005 21:30 - 877 of 10502

There is an argument raging on the cricket forum about the settlement but I can't figure from that how it was settled.

Three penalities in Fulham, Villa match and three misses!! Unreal...

Scripophilist - 02 Feb 2005 21:54 - 878 of 10502

Harlosh, If you followed the "normal" game plan the Chelsea match has been a good one.

Harlosh - 02 Feb 2005 22:01 - 879 of 10502

Yes I did Scrip. Also played the City/Newcastle game for the draw. Also had a small wager on Juventus at HT but didn't pay off. All in all a good night though.

chartist2004 - 03 Feb 2005 13:09 - 880 of 10502

Scrip - Just remind me what the 'normal game plan was' for the Chelsea match :o); I backed Chelsea then 1-1 later.

bakko - 03 Feb 2005 15:36 - 881 of 10502

Chartist,

Without giving too much away as this is covered on Scrip's course, the normal game plan would be to back Chelsea before the start and green up as soon as they scored for a guaranteed profit regardless of the final result.

Scrip, Have I given too much away??

kajman - 03 Feb 2005 17:27 - 882 of 10502

My strategy was to to lay Blackburn, then I greened up when Chelsea scored. But if they didn't score, I still could have greened up near the end of the match as the odds for the draw came down.

The fact that they only managed one goal I think shows that a 0-0 draw was a reasonable possibility.

cunningham - 03 Feb 2005 20:08 - 883 of 10502

Is there any what-if tools on betfair. Whlist coming to grips with all this it would be nice to be able to understand what potential profits\losses may be, if I attempt to green up or reduces losses if things go against me.

Kayak - 03 Feb 2005 20:13 - 884 of 10502

cunningham, click on Settings above the prices and tick "Show a separate future position (prefixed ) (As if unplaced bets were matched)"

Fundamentalist - 03 Feb 2005 20:13 - 885 of 10502

Cunningham

When you are in the page for the event you are betting on, under the title of the event you will see the word "settings" in square brackets in blue. If you click on this, then mark the third box down "show a separate future position" as you enter a bet (and before you submit) it will show you a second column which will show your position if you submit the bet

Kayak - 03 Feb 2005 20:14 - 886 of 10502

He's got too much time on his hands to have written all that :-0
