PC & MAC CLINIC - On line problem solving. (CPU)

I believe all connections are as they should be but so as to check what do I do?

I agree about AOL. When I have been on AOL for some time it will not let me shut down the computer. AOL fails to respond. AOL have been unable to fix the problem. Since there is also the matter of the ICS I have stated that I wish to terminate my one year contract. In short they will not let me! I am unable to take my business elsewhere since there is a broadband indicator placed on the telephone line. Other service providers cannot contract with me.

Essentially I am stuck with them for a further 6 months or until they release me from the contract. Some chance of that!

Croc - Thanks for that. After download I was told I needed Windows Version 5 or higher. I wonder what that meant? Never mind, I think I've sorted it now. K

I know its sad but.......

I have a copy of Ultimate Doom which (the orginal version) I loved to occaisionly play in Windows 95/98.

However I have recently installed it in windows xp and I cannot get the mouse to work, (keyboard only) which is a bit useless when these various "things" come at you....

Have done all the usual including checking with ID software and trying to get windows xp to run it in windows 95/98 but no luck.

Has anybody any ideas......

Richgit69 - 12 Oct 2003 18:16 - 926 of 11003

Paul, check the the game does work on XP first then look for updates of the game for a fix/patch, also have the lastest direct x9 installed on XP this should do it ;-))

if not get Return to Castle Wolfinestein best game ever and scary ;-))

Paulismyname - 12 Oct 2003 18:24 - 927 of 11003

Rich ID software in their FAQ indicate this mouse thing is an issue, was looking for a homemade patch but no luck

Felix(MoneyAM) - 13 Oct 2003 09:59 - 928 of 11003

a commonly occurring problem for our users is Norton Firewall
disabling Javascript which prevents Level2 and other things from working.
I don't have access to the product, so am struggling to advise people
how to deal with this problem.
Could anybody who has it be kind enough to advise (ideally by email)?
Thanks

Thanks DocProc but:
First link: guy has same problem as me, but no one has posted a solution
Second link: page is about an unrelated problem.
Just tried norton.com, no use either.
It feels odd to be the one posting complaints for a change :)

Felix, you've tried checking their security settings in IE haven't been changed by Norton? Java=High safety works fine.

prodman - 13 Oct 2003 14:44 - 932 of 11003

Try this, open Norton's Internet security, then Personal Firewall, click on Person firewall settings, then custom level, this will open another window, you will have 3 options, go to Java Applet Security, scroll to None: Allow Java Applets, then ok and all should work.

Best of luck

Thanks for all this guys, but the problem is Javascript not Java.
Different languages!
They have, to quote, "about as much in common as Karl Marx does with
the Marx brothers".

Yeh - he was funny that Karl Marx!

prodman - 13 Oct 2003 17:35 - 935 of 11003

Felix, this any good?

It could be script blocking

Some Web sites use JavaScript in their navigation controls and in other places. If Norton Personal Firewall is blocking JavaScript or VB Script, it may cause problems with these Web sites.

To stop blocking JavaScript or VB Scripts

1:At the top of the Norton Internet Security window, click Options.
2:Click Internet Security.
3:Click Advanced Options.
4:On the Web tab, click the Active Content tab.
5:In the list of Web sites do one of the following:
*Select the Web site that you want to change.
*Click (Defaults) to change all unlisted Web sites.
6:In the Script box, select Allow All Scripts To Execute.

Have found out how to solve my doom game problem but the cure is worse than the problem.....

Its possible to enable dual booting on windows xp from dos 5 upwards, windows 3.11 windows 95/98 into xp. However......according to the microsoft knowedge database you need to reformat and reinstall dos through to windows 3.11 in a seperate partition/volume as it uses fat formating rather than the more advanced nstc format used by windows xp.

Technical article that is outside my knowedge and would require a clean sweap of my hard drive and start again....but thats the solution.

Repeat this here for others who have compatability problems, do a search in microsoft knowedge base for "windows xp dual boot" for the full artcle

Kayak - 13 Oct 2003 22:41 - 937 of 11003

Paul, you could also add another disk formatted as FAT and put DOS on that. If you go for a small, old one it will only cost you a few pounds.

robber - 13 Oct 2003 22:43 - 938 of 11003

Paul, to solve your problem I think I'd buy a 2nd hand PC and a couple of network cards

Neil

Felix(MoneyAM) - 14 Oct 2003 10:13 - 939 of 11003

Thanks Prodman, I've passed this on to the guy who had the original problem.
We'll see if it helps.

Felix, am keeps closing when I post a note to the BB. Get a popup "Microsoft IE has encountered a problem and needs to close" It then goes back to my home page. Has happened on both my machines this morning so not me I think. Skinny is also having a problem (see traders thread).

Crocodile - 14 Oct 2003 10:35 - 941 of 11003

Paul
Many PC Bios allow you to choose which Hard Disk to boot from, worth a check
D.
2nd HDD's are very reasonably priced at the moment
