THE TALK TO YOURSELF THREAD. (NOWT)

goldfinger - 09 Jun 2005 12:25

Thought Id start this one going because its rather dead on this board at the moment and I suppose all my usual muckers are either at the Stella tennis event watching Dim Tim (lose again) or at Henly Regatta eating cucumber sandwiches (they wish,...NOT).

Anyway please feel free to just talk to yourself blast away and let it go on any company or subject you wish. Just wish Id thought of this one before.

cheers GF.

The whole jobs, work, pay, employment arena has changed and is unlikely to ever be as it was. More and more jobs have been deskilled due to technology. Retail is in a steady decline and once it has bottomed out is unlikely to ever improve. Every time we have a recession, companies use the opportunity to unload staff, cut costs and make their businesses more streamlined.

Even if we have good economic times again, full employment will only be due to low pay, zero hours and self employed status jobs. It is just a fact of life for the future. There will be two classes of work. There will be the highly skilled work and the jobs that anyone could do. That is the trend, like it or not. The bulk of people will be paid poorly. There is going to be a permanent underclass of people.

I remember in the 1960s, commentators would say that we had a golden future with a lot of work being done by machines and computers. We would all have massive amounts of leisure time to do all the things we wanted and people would only have to work a few hours a week.

You would have to be stupid, to believe that. I used to wonder how all this was to be paid for. The answer is that it didn't happen and won't.

cynic - 14 Nov 2014 16:37 - 50262 of 81564

go to the top of the class!
i guess this is common across many industries, so it adds significantly to your class of forced self-employed, but not for the reasons you and and fred like to tout!

goldfinger - 14 Nov 2014 16:46 - 50263 of 81564

I dont go for what Hays says, theirs still plenty of skilled jobs in this country and the opportunity for the government to invest in them.

The real reason we have low pay is that confidence as been at rock bottom , banks have not lent money, confidence amongst job holders is very low as they know if they are laid off they wont find another job (and someone will walk straight into there position) and therefore darent ask for a pay rise etc etc. Its basicaly FEAR ruling the jobs market at the moment not growth or good employers.

goldfinger - 14 Nov 2014 16:52 - 50264 of 81564

And I dont believe Retail is in decline either In fact I would argue that its expanding.

Whats happening in retail is that we have an attack on the established companys by the up and coming discounters.

Just look at the number of new smaller chain outlets that are opening up and down the country. eg, Sainsburys tie up with Netto.

cynic - 14 Nov 2014 16:54 - 50265 of 81564

i think you're bending the facts to suit your theory
for sure general confidence in all walks of life and businesses has taken a real bashing over the last 4/5 years
wage levels and employment will also always lag behind the trend - in both directions

unfortunately for most, the eurozone economies are all still a total mess, some even worse than others ..... even germany has had to own up

the rest of the world is also still not exactly chipper, as is shown by the (new) low level of chemical traffic ...... certainly we find ourselves needing to be ever more clever and nimble in constructing deals

goldfinger - 14 Nov 2014 17:08 - 50266 of 81564

WOW have seen OPAY sp its been clobbered this afternoon. Down 22%. Blimey had a lucky escape.

Theirs been whisperings on twitter about this Equities First Holdings for a couple of days.

I know Winnie and Shareprophets get some bad press and coverage but thank god I took notice, and I bet those in QPP wish they had now.

These aim scumster management should be taken by the FCA and prosecuted.

At least winnie is doing his best to try and see that, that happens, and I say jolly well done Tom, carry on these crooks need catching.

cynic - 14 Nov 2014 17:13 - 50267 of 81564

you leave QPP out of this ..... i'm very happy indeed with its performance :-)

goldfinger - 14 Nov 2014 17:13 - 50268 of 81564

Cyners yep but Hays is painting a picture of a low wage economy on unskilled workers forever going forward, I just dont subscribe to that as we have some of the finest scientists, entrepreneurs, business men in the World in this country.

All they need is long term support and aid going forward and we will have the best most up to date skilled industries in the World here. It just takes a will to carry it out.

goldfinger - 14 Nov 2014 17:15 - 50269 of 81564

LOL, yep cynical mind you have to be in this business but have you seen what these CEOs are getting away with. Surely it as to be Fraud of the highest order.

doodlebug4 - 14 Nov 2014 17:17 - 50270 of 81564

It's a pity you hadn't posted that on the OPAY thread yesterday gf. I don' t think 3 monkies "had a lucky escape".

cynic - 14 Nov 2014 17:18 - 50271 of 81564

the dynamics of industry have and always will change

i don't see uk ever returning to being a leader in metal bashing and heavy industry, but assuredly we're very good indeed at the bespoke end and innovation and scientific r/d and the like

though there will always be a demand for the skilled building trades artisan, the demand for farriers and thatchers is now minimal ...... thatching is reviving somewhat as it happens

cynic - 14 Nov 2014 17:19 - 50272 of 81564

DB4 - but nor did she bite the bullet this morning ..... confess i looked idly at it this morning but felt it had already fallen too far; patently not the case!

Chris Carson - 14 Nov 2014 17:23 - 50273 of 81564

LOL! had a lucky escape. Course he did!

cynic - 14 Nov 2014 17:24 - 50274 of 81564

if anyone sold first thing this morning, that would still apply .... it opened -46 from memory

goldfinger - 14 Nov 2014 17:28 - 50275 of 81564

Doodlebug yesterday it wasnt clear OPAY were involved just whisperings of 6 companys on twitter, and I havent seen a RNS saying they are but it looks mighty likely.

Sends a cold sweat down my back now looking at that close sp.

God I was so lucky.

Just goes to show twitter isnt such the twit you make it out to be , in fact you get market info up there at least 30 minutes before the City gets it.

I swear by it.

Its the best thing to have entered online trading.

Chris Carson - 14 Nov 2014 17:32 - 50276 of 81564

Well I'm sorry cynic where on the OPAY thread is GF's 'I HAVE SOLD' post?

cynic - 14 Nov 2014 17:33 - 50277 of 81564

i've no idea; am i my left-wing brother's keeper?

Chris Carson - 14 Nov 2014 17:33 - 50278 of 81564

Lying Bxxxxxd! :0)

doodlebug4 - 14 Nov 2014 17:33 - 50279 of 81564

Well since you seem to be so clued up on this information on Twitter, why didn't you post it on the OPAY thread yesterday? Everyone isn't so addicted to Twitter as you are - it is now a breeding ground for terrorists, or don't you know that?

cynic - 14 Nov 2014 17:34 - 50280 of 81564

i'ld certainly believe him if he said he'd sold first thing this morning
