Dear All,

I am organising this years MoneyAM Golf Day which is in aid of the Macmillan Cancer Fund. It will be a great day out and all for a worthy cause.

Macmillan dedicates itself to giving every person in the land equal and ready access to the best information, treatment and care for cancer.

As this years event is a charity event, the total cost of the whole day will be 85 (around 20 - 25 will be donated from every entry to the Macmillan Cancer Fund). This will include all golfing activities on the day, bacon rolls on arrival, lunch, an evening dinner, and prize giving ceremony.

The winners of this years event (the afternoon's Texas Scramble) will get 1 years free subscription to MoneyAM Level 2, and the prestigious MoneyAM Annual Golf Challenge Cup which the team will share.

Second and Third place teams will each receive medals, plus 6 months worth of MoneyAM Level 2

MoneyAM will also get prizes for 1, 2, 3, nearest the pin and longest drive in the morning Stableford competition. I will present a Wooden Spoon on the day, so you should all be wary of that!

Itinerary for the Day

8.30 am onwards: Arrival at VGC Meet and greet bacon rolls on arrival

9.30 am onwards: 11 hole Stableford Tee off in groups of 3/4 from 8.30AM although I expect a number will arrive after 9.30am, either pre arranged or allocated on the day

From 12.30: Light rolling Lunch after completion of morning Stableford. Menu - Cold Meat Buffet with New Potatoes and Salad.

1.30 pm: 18 Hole Texas Scramble Pre-arranged teams of 4, each player must hit at least 3 drives and handicap is 1/8th of combined total. Individual entries will be teamed up by organiser in advance

What is Texas Scramble? This is a game of 3 or 4 player teams. All players in a team tee off then the team chooses their best drive and all 3 or 4 will play their second shot from that spot. This continues until the hole is completed, including putting out. There are many variations of handicapping and play, so I have chosen a percentage of combined HCP, with each team member taking 3 compulsory drives.

7.00 pm Evening Meal and Prize Giving:

Starter: Homemade Soup

Main: Chicken Breast with Gruyere cheese wrapped in Bacon

Dessert: Fruit crumble served with Custard

As with previous years, I will need to collect the cash of all participants up front, and I think we will follow the method we have done before:

Cheques payable to: R W L Colby
And please send your cheques (with a note giving your MoneyAM username) to the following address: Ian Taylor MoneyAM Ltd Thames House 18 Park Street London SE1 9ER

Ian will then forward them on to me.

The nearest train station is St Albans City which is about 1km north, and there is a very good 3 star Quality Inn 300 yards away on London Road for around 75 per night.

This years event which will be the best ever. I hope to see familiar and new faces alike in what could prove to be the biggest Golf day we have had so far. Although I am sure competition will be fierce, this is also designed to be an enjoyable day for all.

If you are interested in coming along (and all are welcome), please can you indicate so on this thread, and we can then start collating numbers and collecting the cash.

I look forward to seeing you all there,

Let's not turn this into anything other than a way of promoting a fun golf day out for charity - sponsored by MoneyAM.

I think it is worth remembering that the format used in the last couple of years has only attracted 10/11 people - so not exactly resounding successes. I'm sure quite a few possible participants were put off by the banter surrounding the last one - specifically women and occasional golfers.

Let's keep to the spirit of the day and let's see how many people want to get together for some fun, chat about the markets and friendship - whilst also raising some money for a very worthwhile charity - ain't that what it's supposed to be about?

I'm hoping that we can get lots more people to "have a go".

I did have a 'speech' planned, but MG beat me to it, well mostly. It didn't take a rocket scientist to work out that following excessive competitive spirit displayed on the previous golf thread MAM sponsorship was in serious doubt. Obviously MAM have decided that a Charity Event is something they feel more comfortable sponsoring in the expectation that the format will appeal to a wider audience.

I sincerely hope it does.

Congratulatios mg and pth, at last comments which put the matter into some sort of sensible perspective.

It appears that a lot of negative comment is coming from people who have not played in the previuous two events and it would seem do not intend to play in this one.

As mg says, it is supposed to be a fun day and this year for a good cause.

It is not the Ryder Cup despite the club connection.

Bend a little, come and enjoy, cut out the " ya boo I can beat you", and if you cannot do that just send a contribution a the good cause.

cynic - 27 Jan 2007 09:03 - 64 of 207

i shall happily do the latter, though " ya boo I can beat you" is not my mentality either

Fundamentalist - 27 Jan 2007 10:42 - 65 of 207

If you wish to interpret my comments as negative so be it, i tried to make constructive recommendations to improve the day. For my troubles I got a load of crap via email from Bob accusing me of knocking a worthy cause, a cause which is very dear to my heart and one which i have raised well into 5 figures for (as well as my own regular contributions). Apologies if me feeling aggrieved at this has got to you all, I will leave well alone, enjoy your day

cynic - 27 Jan 2007 12:16 - 66 of 207

fundie ..... trust you did not think i was snapping at you, though i doubt that you did

Kayak - 27 Jan 2007 12:42 - 67 of 207

Seems to me that once the format of a day has been announced in detail then any attempt to change it, particularly a public one, is bound to be seen as negative and unsupportive. OK, I have no idea, maybe you weren't given the opportunity to comment earlier and maybe you should have been, but at the end of the day what is done is done. The day clearly has the support and blessing of MoneyAM and all this "we're such brilliant players that we're not prepared to travel down unless the day is exactly to our specification" rubbish is just that, big-headed rubbish.

Again not getting specifically at you Fundy.

chocolat - 27 Jan 2007 19:48 - 68 of 207

Well I'm glad that none of you is getting at Fundie.
I really really needed him to stand silly mid-off when I'd lined up the windmill sails.
And now look what's happened :S

mg - 28 Jan 2007 12:45 - 69 of 207

My contribution was certainly not intended to be any kind of side swipe aimed at Fundie - in fact I'd love him - and lots of others - to come along. The more the merrier. But, if people don't want to participate that is, of course, their decision.

Let's all keep up the spirit of fun etc.

Have a nice trip Bob I am off to Tenerife in search of some sun, sea, sangria and any other Ss that come my way :)

may have another restaurant or two to recommend in Brussels after my short trip there next week ..... wish A'dam/R'dam or even whole of NL had better culinary delights to offer ..... few and far between

Bobcolby - 06 Feb 2007 12:37 - 78 of 207

Hi Guys

Verulam Golf Club now has a new General Manager. Our old one left in November.

I will be meeting him tomorrow, to firm up everything I agreed with the old one.

We had a nice time in Brussels. cant remember restaurants but we stayed in Meridien just across from gare centrale. Anne got a really good deal on Expedia

Dead Cat Bounce - 06 Feb 2007 12:50 - 79 of 207

Do I have to enter a whole team or can I come along as an individual and be fitted into a team on the day?
