Anti-depressant Drugs don't work - so what does?
Comment on the Official Study by Hull University
It is now over two years since the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) made its recommendation that Beating the Blues should be made available across all Primary Care Trusts. The Government has committed to the Increasing Access to Psychological Therapies Program and has made 170 million of funds available to support this over the next 3 years which is great news but in reality is less than half the cost of one year's prescription costs for anti-depressants.
People quite rightly want to get access to 'talking therapies' and in particular Cognitive Behavioural Therapy which is the most proven form of treating depression and is recommended as the 'first line' intervention in the majority of cases. Most General Practitioners (GPs) want to give their patients the best possible treatment but are also very aware of the very long waiting times for therapists. Often people have to wait more than 12 months to be seen and as a result GPs can end up prescribing anti-depressants.
Beating the Blues has been proven to be as good as face to face therapy and because it is delivered by computer or over the internet it can be made immediately available to the patient yet the vast majority of General Practitioners still cannot refer them to Beating the Blues.
So after 2 years of trying to get the NHS to meet its binding obligation to make Beating the Blues available to GP's and patients we asked the Secretary of State for Health to explain why?
He replied; "...although cCBT (Beating the Blues) is mandated by NICE, it is the responsibility of PCTs and local commissioners to ensure it is delivered." He then went on to say; "Individual patients who are dissatisfied with any aspect of NHS treatment - including the non availability of treatments to which they are entitled should consider raising their concerns."
We are therefore using the opportunity offered by the release of the Official Study and the subsequent news in the media to let you know that there is a proven alternative to drugs and a way to get access to 'talking therapy' without having to wait months or even years. It is called Beating the Blues and according to the Government if you want to get it all you have to do is go and ask your GP and they will provide it for you and if they don't raise your concerns about the treatment you are being denied.
We have put together some more information to help you at The Wellness Shop.

mhhp (((((((((launch products and services on 27th March 2008)))))))))))))
mhhp is pleased to announce that:
The Minister for Care Services, Ivan Lewis will launch its latest products and services at The House of Lords.
Lord Tenby, Chairman of Byways Trust and Honorary Vice-President of mcch Society has kindly agreed to host the event and will introduce the proceedings.
mhhp will be represented by the independent chairman of its steering group, Gordon Boxall and the Department of Health, by Kathryn Tyson who also chairs the mhhp programme management board.
DH invested 5M to support the development of the mental health helplines partnership and senior managers have directed a programme that has led to an excellent range of products and services underpinned by sound governance arrangements. Good progress is being made by mhhp in its quest to incorporate as a charity in line with the wishes of the membership and an update on the timetable for this will be part of the proceedings.
The latest product is key to the longstanding ambition for people in mental distress to have access to high quality services 24/7. A technical solution produced by ntl:Telewest Business with Call Handling Services Ltd has been successfully piloted and offers opportunities to give callers choice to access alternative accredited services should their helpline of choice be closed or engaged. It also provides excellent management information and, through combined purchasing power, all at a much-reduced unit cost to the helpline.
The findings of a review of Helplines that specialise in services for people from Black and Minority Ethnic Groups will also be shared at the event. There are some key findings that mhhp will be working to address further.
mhhp is an excellent example of how the third sector can work with government to turn good policy proposals into positive outcomes for people receiving services, efficiently, economically and effectively. It may well be a blue-print for other such initiatives.
