This is new today as well .. http://www.mentalhealth.org.uk/information/news?EntryId17=55586 Three new mental health services have been introduced in north Somerset as part of a drive to beat depression and anxiety.

WOODIE - 03 Mar 2008 17:41 - 1025 of 1525

from the link above.
Three new mental health services have been introduced in north Somerset as
part of a drive to beat depression and anxiety.

An eight-week computer self-help programme, Beating the Blues, teaches
people practical skills to help them feel better.

GPs can 'prescribe' a book relating to patient's particular health problems
from a list recommended by experts.

They suggest the best book and issue a prescription giving details, which
can be taken to any North Somerset Library.

Since September, a pilot scheme has been running at New Court Surgery in
Weston-super-Mare, where patients can see an information and advice worker.

The specialist workers offer information on getting back to work,
volunteering and education.

Julie Kells, programme manager for mental health said: "By bringing in
these additional services, we are already contributing towards the new
North Somerset Primary Care Mental Health Service, which we aim to fully
implement during 2008

U.K. demands all SSRI data
March 3, 2008
Tools Email Print Comment Contact Author
Put your cards on the table, ladies and gentlemen. A U.K. minister is calling on drug companies to hand over all their data on antidepressants to the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence. NICE, you'll recall, is reviewing its guidelines for the use of SSRI drugs, aiming to issue new treatment advice this fall. Failing to hand over that data "would leave the inevitable impression they had something to hide," the minister said. In the past, another official said, the government has been unable to get access to unpublished trials.

The request comes on the heels of last week's study showing that SSRIs were effective only in the most severely depressed patients. Despite the U.K.'s official position that drugs shouldn't be the first line of defense against depression, they're among Britain's most prescribed meds with more than 31 million scrips in 2006.

Thursday, February 28, 2008
The treatment groups involving CBT were associated with higher rates of treatment response, with 55% of those who received CBT in addition to any medication seeing an improvement in symptoms. Only 41% of those who took medication without CBT experienced the same effect. There were no significant differences between the different types of SSRI or between SSRIs and the SNRI Effexor. As we have discussed previously, Effexor is associated with potentially severe side effects, especially during discontinuation of use, and this study supports the use of SSRIs rather than Effexor.

WOODIE - 06 Mar 2008 06:06 - 1031 of 1525

Company:
Ultrasis was the first company to offer computerised products based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and interactive multimedia, and is still the world leader in this field. The products help people tackle stress, anxiety and depression, and a full spectrum of related chronic conditions.
The company's flagship product for anxiety and depression, Beating the Blues was developed in collaboration with Dr Judy Proudfoot and her colleagues at the Institute of Psychiatry, London. The product, based on cognitive behavioural therapy, has recently been endorsed by NICE as a clinically and cost effective treatment for mild and moderate depression. This product will have a major impact on the ability of GPs to offer non-pharmaceutical treatments and reduce waiting lists for cognitive behavioural therapy.

Role:
Due to consistent rapid growth they are now recruiting an additional Key Account Manager covering the London/ M4 Corridor and the South West who will be responsible for maximising sales and building relationships with all key NHS stakeholders on territory. Reporting to the National Sales Manager they will also be involved in the implementation and ongoing training programmes for the customer base.

Requirements:
Candidates will have a track record in pharmaceutical sales with experience of working with key NHS customers or key accounts an obvious advantage. This young dynamic company is experiencing dramatic uptake and growth of their portfolio and want talented, committed sales people who see the opportunity to join and grow with the organisation as a real career challenge

Hi all been told by friends in Northern Ireland that some deal has been struct regarding an on line computer programme for assisting in the treatment of Anxiety and depression.
Dont no much about the N Ireland health system but think its the same as England (PCT) so most likely its ULT programme.
Cannot find any supportive News release yet !
Anyone else have any info ?

elbow - 06 Mar 2008 17:08 - 1034 of 1525

Got this from Interactive Investor discussion site on ULT just !

The Northern Health and Social Services Board and the Northern Health and Social Trust are delighted to announce the launch of an online programme aimed at helping people with mild to moderate anxiety and depression.
Brendan Forde, Project Manager for enhanced Services, Primary Care, Northern Board, said:
We are delighted to support this initiative developed jointly by NHSSB Primary Care and the Northern Health and Social Care Trust. This programme offers sufferers of mild anxiety and depression the opportunity to help them manage their conditions, with support from health professionals as required. We are recommending this programme to GPs in the Board area so they in turn can direct patients to this online tool if clinically appropriate

Regardless have confidence in this one.

Its got that ring to it supported by Government and professionals alike.
I think we may have futher News regarding the West Midlands PCT's i.e Dudley who have recently merged there north and South PCTs and Walsall.

Depression and Anxiety always high here concerning Wolverhampton FC Birmingham FC and the baggies he he !!

mcmahons - 07 Mar 2008 08:21 - 1039 of 1525

So looks like Northern Ireland health system have taken this on board.

elbow - 07 Mar 2008 08:29 - 1040 of 1525

End of financial year is just around the corner we always see PCTs off loading
unspent budgets at this time. If they dont spend it my end of year budget is reduced following. So would expect some spending in this direction.
Also its cost effective with proven measurable results so very likely.
