Apart from the defaults, I only have AdBlock Plus if that helps narrow it down.

HARRYCAT - 28 Sep 2015 13:57 - 10862 of 11003

Have disabled all Extensions and no different. New tabs still hang.
No doubt Google will come up with a fix at some point.....says he hopefully!

ExecLine - 28 Sep 2015 14:22 - 10863 of 11003

Lots of people use CCleaner.

Do check that it isn't running from StartUp by unclicking it and thereby disabling it in your StartUp Folder.

The best way of doing this is to open CCleaner itself and then do so from the appropriate section of StartUp in CCleaner.

IMHO, if CCleaner is running at the same time as an AV program then it is possible to easily 'choke up' the browser. Disabling CCleaner from StartUp stops this.

Of course, you can always advantageously use CCleaner independently and seperately later.

Strangely opening pages in a new window solves the problem, so that's what I am having to do for the foreseeable future. Haven't yet found a way of getting Chrome to open every link in a new window by default rather than a new tab.

skinny - 29 Sep 2015 10:30 - 10865 of 11003

Harry - have a look here - looks a bit over the top, but 6 has the option to "open all bookmarks in new window" where all bookmarks have been predefined by you.

HARRYCAT - 29 Sep 2015 10:51 - 10866 of 11003

Now got C:\Program Files(x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\Chrome.exe
The server threw an exception

Having Googled all of that, seems it's an ongoing problem. No known fix yet....as far as I can see.

The latest and most up to date version of Chrome appears to be:

Version 45.0.2454.101 m

1. Click on the 'three lines box to the top RHS of the browser window'
(NB. A 'Hover' over this box shows 'Customise and control Google Chrome')
2. Click on 'Help and about'
3. Click on 'About Google Chrome' - to get the Chrome version number

HARRYCAT - 29 Sep 2015 14:20 - 10868 of 11003

Thanks. I am up to date.

ExecLine - 29 Sep 2015 14:24 - 10869 of 11003

What did you do with CCleaner, HarryCat?

HARRYCAT - 29 Sep 2015 14:32 - 10870 of 11003

I haven't yet gone that route. This is a new laptop (6 months old) with Windows 10 recently installed, so I am reluctant to mess around too much with other software at this stage. Having read through a few forums on these problems I have found out that Google are aware of them, though no fixes are yet available. The consensus of opinion is that there is a conflict with an Extension, though disabling each one doesn't seem to have any effect.
I am tempted to change browser, but other people seem to be having problems with Firefox. I have never tried Opera.

skinny - 30 Sep 2015 10:23 - 10871 of 11003

Harry - did you see post 10865?

HARRYCAT - 30 Sep 2015 12:19 - 10872 of 11003

Yes thanks.

Mega Bucks - 01 Oct 2015 13:32 - 10873 of 11003

Would like some help please folks on the wife's laptop, its a Toshiba about a year old running the dreaded Windows 8.

Its never missed a beat and she loves it and i hate the OS,this morning it was fired up exactly as it is every morning, but when she started FireFox today it run FF s it should do,but the problem that we are having it changes screen by its own alternating between the 'Start screen' and 'Firefox' and nothing has been changed settings wise or anything like that.

The computer also has the latest paid Avast which is always updated and never changed any settings either, the 1st thing that i did was do a scan for any virus problems and the report is nil.

Any suggestions on what could cause this alternating between FF and the Start screen please, not sure if FF has had any latest updates that could cause this problem, only thing that she uses this expensive laptop on is Facebook games and no downloaded games.Thought i would mention the Facebook thing just incase they could have sneaked a code onto the laptop.

One other possible cause is could the Win10 free download icon that appears on the laptop that if you click it you will then get the free download, dont want to download Win 10 as version 8 is bad enough.

Any suggestions on this one please, can fathom most problems out but as i dont use Win8 myself i am not sure of the problems that can arise from this OS,but up till today she has enjoyed using it and not downloaded anything that she should not of done.

Have narrowed this down a little,it appears its not FF related,it appears to alternate between the Start Screen and the Desktop Screen so this is indicating a sole Windows 8 problem,as we have narrowed it down, could it be possible to have ticked something by mistake or some other external problem like say a virus or some other horrible thing.

Many thanks

There's probably an ants nest inside the keyboard, Mega.

ExecLine - 01 Oct 2015 13:53 - 10875 of 11003

Looks like your machine has been 'hi-jacked' from some malware or similar.

Download and run "AdwCleaner". Do be careful where you download it from though!
Unbelievably, one of the favourite download sites is CNet and it is responsible for dumping unwanted material onto unsuspecting users.

I would suggest: http://adwcleaner.en.lo4d.com/

You will see the latest version is '5.009'. Hit the Green download button to the RHS of the page which says 1.59MB.

'Hilary' on here put me onto this piece of software and I do think it is fantastic and should be a part of everyone's kit.

ExecLine - 01 Oct 2015 13:54 - 10876 of 11003

Agreed, Hils?

hilary - 01 Oct 2015 13:59 - 10877 of 11003

Not me, Doc, I've never heard of AdwCleaner.

The only thing I'd have said is that you need to be careful about hidden checkboxes which install unwanted toolbars and plugins whenever you download the free crap.

ExecLine - 01 Oct 2015 14:19 - 10878 of 11003

Agreed. That's the big problem for getting downloads with the CNet site.

The site I've mentioned for AdwCleaner in my link above is safe, IMHO. Or at least it was the last time I used it, which was sometime last week.

By 'safe', I mean you don't seem to get unwanted 'already ticked' boxes. Even the Piriform, the home site for CCleaner (Free and Pro), tends to give you one of those these days.

ExecLine - 01 Oct 2015 14:21 - 10879 of 11003

Hils

Hmmm?

I'm sure you suggested I try it to get rid of some unwanted tool bar or similar that just would not go away.

Ah well.

Mega Bucks - 01 Oct 2015 14:40 - 10880 of 11003

Just a quick update, have disconnected the laptop from the internet by taking out the network cable and the screen alternating has stopped, this will then allow me to do a full scan of the whole laptop and this indicates some sort of external attempt to highjack the pc.

At least i can work on the repair side of the problem then connect it back up with extra safety precautions or try and find out how it got pass my Avast full system protection.
