FTSE + FTSE 250 - consider trading (FTSE)

cynic - 20 Oct 2007 12:12

rather than pick out individual stocks to trade, it can often be worthwhile to trade the indices themselves, especially in times of high volatility.

for those so inclined, i attach below charts for FTSE and FTSE 250, though one might equally be tempted to trade Dow or S&P, which is significantly broader in its coverage, or even NASDAQ

for ease of reading, i have attached 1 year and 3 month charts in each instance

cynic - 22 Jun 2015 16:40 - 17901 of 21973

well i have rashly opened small longs in both FTSE (6814) and DOW (18172)

deltazero - 22 Jun 2015 16:51 - 17902 of 21973

cynic's 17892 - i obviously closed @ 7800 :-)))))))))))))))) - only joking of course nearly choked on my coffee when i saw that 'increase'

aside from that pretty good day as expected

cynic - 22 Jun 2015 16:53 - 17903 of 21973

i had a good day too, so also no complaints :-)

skinny - 22 Jun 2015 17:00 - 17904 of 21973

Cynic - I happen to be short from 6814 - but won't hang around if it goes against me.

cynic - 22 Jun 2015 20:11 - 17905 of 21973

certainly it could all go either way even now, but my inclination remains that a deal with the grease will be done, and if so, shorting will not be the right call

skinny - 22 Jun 2015 21:01 - 17906 of 21973

I'm guessing you mean Greece (unless a pun is intended) - but I think it will drag on for a few days (minimum) - which may (or not) mean the market drifts?!

cynic - 22 Jun 2015 21:04 - 17907 of 21973

not sure which way the markets will go, but quite possibly gyrate madly at times depending on the news coming out and perception of progress or otherwise

deltazero - 23 Jun 2015 01:24 - 17908 of 21973

north then sideways likely today - low hanging fruit day ;

cynic - 23 Jun 2015 13:19 - 17909 of 21973

discipline needed to avoid greed
though a skeleton agreement may be agreed, there's plenty of time for some frights before everything is finalised

cynic - 23 Jun 2015 15:11 - 17910 of 21973

DOW has limped back through 18,170 so let's see if it can hold that through to the close

Claret Dragon - 23 Jun 2015 16:03 - 17911 of 21973

A bit of profit taking over next couple of days?

deltazero - 23 Jun 2015 22:51 - 17912 of 21973

cynic 17909 - ref greed - absolutely - the quickest way to lose a profit can be to be too greedy ;

satisfactory day's trading today here and elsewhere :-)

Claret Dragon - 24 Jun 2015 06:51 - 17913 of 21973

No trades on Tuesday. Long term FTSE 100 at the same level as 1999. Hard to believe with 16 years inflation compounded.

I digress though.

cynic - 24 Jun 2015 10:44 - 17914 of 21973

markets have suddenly softened quite a bit
anyone know of any scary news re greece or similar that has just come out?

jimmy b - 24 Jun 2015 10:46 - 17915 of 21973

No but i put a short on the FTSE just now and closed it again ,it's not going along with the DAX and DOW.

midknight - 24 Jun 2015 11:07 - 17916 of 21973

Telegraph reporting creditors did not accept latest Greek proposals.

cynic - 24 Jun 2015 11:15 - 17917 of 21973

i suppose if you're really concentrating hard, there's money to be made, but the range has actually been pretty tight
