Hi guys and girls, thought this one deserved a proper header, so started a new thread.

Looks like break out may be imminent with a 30+% rise today. 2 trade after close for 1.1million shares at 4.45p, looks like another mark up tomorrow on opening.

kate bates - 15 Jan 2008 07:41 - 3 of 183

Looks a good one this, i'll have a few more today, Matrix (who have a fantastic track record in this sector eg BRR) have recently said the following about ANR:

"Our middle-case NPV calculation
suggests an un-risked project valuation of 1.2bn (44p at our
assumed share base), increasing to over 2.7bn (100p per share)."

Suspect they'll team up with a major to get the extraction started. Got some way to go i do believe.

kate bates - 15 Jan 2008 08:40 - 4 of 183

Mustn't be much stock kicking about, moving up on every buy. Nothing in the press as yet.

oilyrag - 15 Jan 2008 09:29 - 5 of 183

I suspected that this might happen, all that blue, keep going please. No I'm not begging.

kate bates - 15 Jan 2008 09:44 - 6 of 183

nice tight spread 4.8 - 5p. Marketmakers after stock with 150000 on the bid as opposed to just 50000 on the ask.

oilyrag - 15 Jan 2008 10:16 - 7 of 183

I hate to say it, but I think the rise may be overdone as the mm's are now showing sales at 4.8p as buys, giving a false impression of momentum. I do hope that I'm wrong, but I've seen this many times before.

Toya - 15 Jan 2008 10:25 - 8 of 183

sp already up 50% in last couple of days so I would wait for it to pull back before buying

oilyrag - 15 Jan 2008 10:38 - 9 of 183

Like I said, if they were all purchases, then why should sp turn down.

kate bates - 15 Jan 2008 10:58 - 10 of 183

Tree shake i see, better to take notice of the 175000 buy at 5p and the 3 buys yesterday of nearly 2 million shares at 4.5p - well over the ask. Looks like somebody got the nod to get in.

Coal shortage in China - Government power plants!

Bejing 15.01.2008 (www.emfis.com)

China had now power stations, which for more than 6% of the South China electricity supply are responsible. The reason for this was the shortage of the raw material, coal in the region are not available. In the southern provinces, this is the worst power outage since about 5 years ago. In Guanxi included a power plant with 2.3 gigawatts of energy output, in Guizhou was 4.2 gigawatts of the largest power plant shut down and Yunnan missing by the shutdown of a power plant at least 3.8 gigawatts. From the regions were already some time before aid requests to the central government sent.

China currently generates about 78% of its power with coal, and is therefore for the import of raw material to the world's top concern.

halifax - 15 Jan 2008 21:35 - 15 of 183

Even if the project goes ahead it will be a few years before supplies reach China CDN is poducing now and the price of coking coal is expected to rise to $150 per ton during 2008.

Pimpernel - 14 Feb 2008 16:43 - 18 of 183

A near 19% rise for this stock today and not one comment on this thread. I can only suppose that it is "below the radar" as far as most people are concerned but I think it's well worth looking at, especially after seeing this afternoon's RNS.

Pimpernel - 15 Feb 2008 08:27 - 19 of 183

Yes, moving up nicely now. Glad I got into this one yesterday morning.

oilyrag - 15 Feb 2008 08:34 - 20 of 183

How far, how quickly?

Pimpernel - 15 Feb 2008 08:40 - 21 of 183

Not sure oily but yesterday's news was excellent. This, for my money, is the most interesting stock I've come upon in years.

Pimpernel - 15 Feb 2008 16:49 - 22 of 183

A near 30% rise in the sp over just two trading sessions can't be bad. I just hope we can have some more of the same next week.

Pimpernel - 20 Feb 2008 09:04 - 23 of 183

Rising nicely again today making a near 40% increase in the sp since last Thursday. I have high hopes for this stock.

oilyrag - 20 Feb 2008 10:01 - 24 of 183

Do I top slice for a free ride or do I hold?

oilyrag - 20 Feb 2008 10:21 - 25 of 183

Should have done, Oh well there's always another day.

Completion of Field Technical Programme

Altona seem to manage to do things on time and to schedule, which is always encouraging. Looks to me like a good long-term hold.

oilyrag - 04 Mar 2008 07:29 - 27 of 183

Hi Toya. Yesterday all trades went through brokers, today could have some positive gains, with plenty of opportunities to top up along the way.

Toya - 04 Mar 2008 07:30 - 28 of 183

Hi Oily - I don't hold these as yet, but have been keeping on my watchlist. I remember they held their AGM same day as BRR, and they more or less share UK premises.

oilyrag - 04 Mar 2008 07:35 - 29 of 183

This year, they should both be well worth attending back to back. Followed by lunch and a bit of shopping.

Toya - 04 Mar 2008 07:36 - 30 of 183

Good idea Oily!

I shall be buying some ANR shares soon but probably the price will be going up today so may wait.

oilyrag - 24 Apr 2008 08:31 - 31 of 183

Toya, are you in yet. Wrangling between Homeland, a major investor and Altona over the chinese. Some are suggesting a posible bidding war. Either way ANR is going up at the mo.

Toya - 24 Apr 2008 08:37 - 32 of 183

Morning Oily - I haven't got in, and am tending to shy away from the smaller companies recently, but thanks for reminding me. I'm moving more towards trading in CFDs and indices

Very positive step for ANR with a major deal with the Chinese CNOOC.

This ones caught my attention.

kate bates - 26 Aug 2009 11:18 - 40 of 183

Started buying today, as my good friend would say, it is a pure punt, not because i think it won't bring big rewards, it's just that i find it hard to value the business. NAV is supposedly 26p and broker targets range from 44p upto 100p. What really takes my fancy is that deal they signed with China's largest state run oil co, now that is not to be sniffed at and for that reason, "I'M IN".

Balerboy - 28 Aug 2009 10:38 - 41 of 183

my confidence in your buying skills just dropped kate.

kate bates - 01 Sep 2009 08:57 - 42 of 183

balerboy, i think you'll be pleasantly surprised here in the next few weeks (that's if you hold). Bought a few more this morning and looks like a few have followed me. Could be massive this one (so i'm informed).

Balerboy - 01 Sep 2009 09:48 - 43 of 183

I am in at 4.9p so waiting with anticipation...lol

marni - 01 Sep 2009 11:08 - 44 of 183

i bought too at same price but in jan 2008!!

saw this go to 1p before going back to 5.5p last week or so.....what a rollercoaster.

anyway i bought these for long term and am hoping of a ten bagger! ah dreams

Balerboy - 01 Sep 2009 11:53 - 45 of 183

You didn't take a gamble on an averaging down buy at 1p then.

marni - 01 Sep 2009 12:24 - 46 of 183

didnt have enough funds as did that on my larger investmnts which have done really well

kate bates - 19 Sep 2009 11:53 - 47 of 183

looks like Monday could be a big day, the share went from red to blue and finished around 16% up. As we all know with this one, any good news seems to be leaked before the announcement is amde official. The person who got me involved in this one mentioned the possibility of a co called SASOL getting involved as they were looking for a presence in Australia. I've linked their website below and it just shows how big ANR could become, may just be onto a huge company in the making with ANR.

Toya - 19 Sep 2009 15:41 - 48 of 183

You're right - something has woken this up. Large volume and and right at the end of a week too, which seems good.
I'm looking for it to break through the 5.5p level, which looks significant on the chart.

maybe you should read it again, maybe a bit better buy a couple millions.

It has not move down since, and one can buy it at best price so far on this retracement.

This company takes a lot of time to turn around at the bottom, I had the experience before, but when it move UP it does it fast, so the timing is very important

Wait for tomorrow and most likely paying price is close to offer, and by then, I will take the piss out of " Caty Bites"

Well I would say otherwise, from 1.50 to 4.50p gives a 3 bagger

During the last 4 month they have move into the range 4p to 5.50p, that can give returns of over 30 % for trading short term, as the spread can be small or able to buy at middle price

Altona Energy anticipating significant value uplift
Business Financial Newswire
Australian-based Altona Energy believes that the recent milestone joint venture agreement with CNOOC New Energy Investment, a subsidiary of one of China's three largest state owned oil companies, to investigate developing the Company's 7.8 billion tonne coal resource should transform its fortunes.

Chairman Chris Lambert says: "The scale of this project is truly fantastic, and as a result we expect a significant value uplift in Altona as we develop the project in tandem with our partners."

Under the agreement, the Chinese partner has agreed to fund and manage a bankable feasibility study ('BFS') for a coal mine and an integrated value-added project, in return for a 51% interest in Altona's exploration licences.

In the event that CNOOC-NEI wishes to proceed to the development phase of a project prior to the finalisation of the BFS, they will be required to procure Altona's share of debt funding to develop the project.

Lambert adds: "The Company's current base case for the Arckaringa Project envisages an operation mining 10Mt of coal to produce 10mmbbl distillate per annum and 560MW of exportable power.

" South Australia also faces a shortage of base load power, fuel and water, both generally and especially for the mining sector, with the Arckaringa Project ideally located to help meet these needs.

"Once on stream, the Arckaringa Project would help make South Australia and the Northern Territories self sufficient in diesel fuel, particularly since the closure of the Port Stanvac refinery.

"Additionally the Arckaringa Project also has the potential for coal and liquids exports to China and other Asian destinations. "

The Golfer, Alpha is a different company, operating in USA and listed on NYSE: because it has the same symbol ANR news items will be picked up and inadvertently placed against Altona Energy. What to do? is rising today

I guess the main arguments against are:-
(i) ANR has such asset backing and such a low price that downside risk is probably very low for the patient investor
(ii) one might miss a rise in ANR while out of Altona
(iii) one should have a diversified portfolio and moving may concentrate risk (depending on the portfolio makeup).

I dont wish to say anything against Altona, and Gene Grant may well be right. I will keep some funds here, and in several others with strong potential, as part of my balanced portfolio.

Although I wouldnt go as far as the message from these gals .....

Yesterday's EVOLUTION note .........

08 November 2010
Altona Energy (ANR.L) Buy -
Heating up
A recent visit to South Australia exhibited the potential of Altonas
Arckaringa coal project. The company has good relationships with the
South Australian authorities and, we believe, is laying solid foundations
for the future. The Chinese joint venture partners are now building
critical mass in Adelaide and we expect that this stage will be completed
before the end of the year. In the meantime, considerable background
work is ongoing and we believe that the parties will be able

Valuation
We have undertaken a range of updated valuations for Altona focused on a
mixture of where we currently perceive the group and how we anticipate the project
to be developed over time. From a current 12-18 month valuation of around
35p/share we see considerable longer-term upside to 60p as the project moves
closer to production.

Recommendation
We expect that Altonas news generation is set to move up a gear in 2011 as the
company pushes ahead with the work required to complete the various studies that
will feed into a development decision. Given the nature of the Chinese joint venture
partners this may be made ahead of completion of a formal bankable feasibility
study, in which case CNOOC-NEI is required to arrange bank finance for the project.
This would ease Altonas financial requirements and potentially enhance equity
value. Against this backdrop, and with a 35p target price, we reiterate our
recommendation on the stock. Buy.

as for the euro, i concur that it's in for a very bad time and i would be a seller of same if forex was my idea of fun ..... it is not entirely impossible that we'll end up with a 2-tier euro, though i'm not sure that that would work any better .... that said, i guess it would result in massive devaluation for some countries and the effective expunging of debt

The BFS is being undertaken by the joint venture between CNOOC New Energy International (Australia) and the Altona's wholly-owned subsidiary, Arckaringa Energy.

Altona said its application for a two-year renewal of the Arckaringa exploration licences on behalf then JV partners, CNOOC-NEIA (51%) and Arckaringa Energy (49%) had been successful.

The renewal of ELs in South Australia is typically for a period of one year within a maximum five-year timeframe, subject to meeting minimum expenditure commitments and other terms of the licences.

But the Minister for Mineral Resources has granted the renewals for two years in recognition of the detailed work programme which will be carried out as part of the BFS.

Altona MD Chris Schrape said that "the SA Government's decision to approve the application will extend secure tenure until June 2013 and provides a strong regulatory foundation for the continuing work of the JV partners on the BFS".

He added: "The renewal underlines the SA Government's recognition of the significant scope of the BFS and the potential impact of the Arckaringa project on the State's energy economy, in particular decreasing its dependency on imported fuels and boosting power supply."

Altona also said preparations for field programmes, including the submission of the exploration works approval (EWA), are well advanced.

In formulating the EWA submission, which requires precise technical descriptions of borehole and hydrogeological test well locations and specifications, CNOOC-NEIA and Altona are taking into account the programme design recommendations included in the geology and hydrogeology review reports commissioned and recently received from the China National Administration for Coal Geology (CNACG) and also the input from other drilling and hydrogeological specialists in Australia and China.

Executive chairman Chris Lambert said: "We are pleased with the increasing momentum on the BFS and look forward to reporting on continued further progress in due course."
