Avanti Communications (AVN)

hlyeo98 - 04 Aug 2010 11:22

This is a BUY tip from Tom Winnifrith...

Sorry if this is rather boring as the market cap is now c 350 million but at 470p Avanti Communications (AVN) - a stock held in the SF t1ps Growth Fund - is really very cheap whichever way you look at it. It is now funded to launch 3 satellites into space ( and fully insured if the worst happens which will only delay the programme by 6 months anyway). You value Avanti by discounting back the net cashflows these satellites will generate. That depends on how much capacity is sold and at what price. Use a model based on very conservative assumptions and this stock is worth 13 ( the lowest valuation in the market). But that model uses assumptions about sales prices which are already being beaten by forward sales Avanti is booking today. Use those prices and you head up to the 22.50 value of house broker Cenkos. My own view is that Avanti will do better still and this stock could therefore be worth 25. Exc itement will mount as the first satellite is launched later this year. Remember those valuations are the Net Present Value of future cashflows ( i.e. what they are worth today). If you can buy at under 600p ( as you can now) you should do so and sit back and wait. I suspect after HYLAS 1 is launched you will never again be able to buy at less than 600p.

tabasco - 18 Oct 2010 09:34 - 25 of 382

Dilthere still must be a risk elementsatellites are launched on top of rockets and carried into space or so I thought?is that the case with this launchsounds a risky businesshow would the SP respond to a successful launch?not a great deal is my view but it becomes a far safer playwait and see would be the obvious betan SP jump to 7-50 on completed launch would prove me wrongimo
One other point Dilthe company have statedfirst satellite, called HYLAS 1, will launch in November 2010 and will be the first superfast broadband satellite launched in Europe.
Then they go on to saymarket for 2Mb satellite broadband products in the markets served by Avanti is estimated at more than 100 million householdsam I missing something?

Dil - 18 Oct 2010 10:25 - 26 of 382

Think your summary of the launch risk is fair and as there will be a few weeks testing after launch and that may well be the safest time to take the plunge but I guess you won't be getting them for six quid.

Think the "superfast" stuff is aimed at commercial users such as the military , etc.

Hylas-1 net-dedicated satellite launches
By Jonathan Amos

Science correspondent, BBC News

Hylas climbed to orbit aboard an Ariane 5, the 40th mission in the rocket's career
Ariane completes flawless launch
The first satellite dedicated to delivering broadband services to Europe has launched on an Ariane 5 rocket.

The Hylas spacecraft is designed to fill so-called "notspots" - remote locations such as rural villages where it is currently not possible to get a fast internet connection.

Lift-off from the Kourou spaceport in French Guiana occurred at 1539 local time (1839 GMT).

The satellite was successfully placed in orbit 34 minutes later.

A signal from Hylas was picked up almost immediately at an antenna sited in India.

Controllers will now take a number of weeks to position the spacecraft properly in the sky some 36,000km above the equator, and to check out onboard systems.

Hylas (Highly Adaptable Satellite) is a commercial venture operated by start-up Avanti Communications of London, but the spacecraft itself incorporates technology developed with public funding through the European Space Agency (Esa).

"It is a fairly small spacecraft but rather capable," Esa's Hylas project manager Andrea Cotellessa told BBC News.

"The payload has flexibility to reallocate bandwidth and power in each of the eight spot beams that cover key market areas selected by Avanti.

"Normally, satellites have this frequency plan fixed at the design stage and it can't be changed in orbit.

"On Hylas, this can be done at any moment in time from the control centre. This agility is important because it will allow Avanti to keep up with market evolution."

Hylas was prepared at the Portsmouth, UK, factory of EADS Astrium, Europe's largest space company, and in Bangalore by Antrix, a commercial arm of the Indian space agency (Isro).

The 2.6-tonne spacecraft will operate in the Ka radio band and deliver broadband services to some 350,000 subscribers.

On behalf of: Avanti Communications Group plc ("Avanti" or

Avanti Communications Group plc Successful launch of HYLAS 1

Avanti Communications (LSE: AVN), the broadband satellite operator, is delighted to announce the successful launch of HYLAS 1 from the Kourou Space Centre on an Ariane 5 launcher on Friday 26th November at 18.39 GMT.

The Ariane 5 launch was perfect, injecting HYLAS 1 into the correct orbit precisely on schedule. HYLAS 1 separated from the Ariane 5 after 34 minutes of flight and telemetry was immediately received at the control centre. The solar arrays deployed on schedule and all systems checks showed full spacecraft functions to be working correctly.

David Williams, Chief Executive of Avanti Communications, commented: "I am delighted that HYLAS 1 is safely in orbit and operating as planned under our control. "HYLAS 1 is a uniquely flexible satellite and we are now delighted to be able to offer broadband to communities, businesses and governments around Europe who previously suffered from the lack of high quality communications. Anyone in the UK and within our European beams who needs broadband can now have it, regardless of their location.

"Before we begin to put customer traffic onto the satellite in the New Year, we will be working to enhance the revenue generating potential of the satellite. As a result of certain extra design activities during manufacture HYLAS 1 has higher performance than the original design provided for and is able to offer certain new services. We will analyse the precise performance characteristics of the satellite in these operating modes before commercial service commences.

"This is the first major step for us in creating a business which I hope will lead the World in Ka band satellite communications."

Article from siliconrepublic.com dated 26/11/10 .... I like the last bit :-)

Rocket mans broadband firm on FTSE 100 trajectory

A businessman whose previous venture capital company delivered a 768pc return for investors could turn out to be the unlikely saviour of broadband in the Northern Hemisphere as his stg120m HYLAS 1 satellite rockets into space tonight.

David Williams Avanti Communications aims to deliver 10Mbps broadband to rural residents and businesses in Ireland and across Europe, the Middle East and Africa for as little as 25 per month.

Williams, whose previous venture capital company Active Media Capital wound down in 2006, delivering investors a 768pc return on investment, has listed Avanti on the London Stock Exchange and told Siliconrepublic that he believes it will be successful enough to enable the firm to enter the FTSE100.

The satellite HYLAS 1 is the first of its kind to be launched outside the US and will lift off on an Ariane 5 rocket from French Guiana at 18.39 GMT tonight.

The most powerful of Ariane 5s beams will be trained on Ireland. The overall cost of the satellite is stg120 million and has been funded by investors as well as the European Space Agency and the UK Space Agency.

We already have satellites in the sky that are designed for TV and anybody else who provides satellite broadband either charges too much or it's heavily subsidised.

Weve been building two broadband satellites, the first one launches Friday and will be the first of its kind to be launched outside the US.

Williams explained that his satellite will use KA-band technology, which can provide higher speeds than TV satellites which use KU-band technology.

KA-band brings all the benefits of speed and technology. You can get speeds of up to 200Mbps. Weve chosen to buy in bulk modems that typically provide home owners or office users with 10Mbps at a rational price point. We will offer modems with higher speeds to government and enterprise users.

I asked Williams how soon a commercial iteration of the service will take to be put in place. Testing will happen fairly quickly and well spend time experimenting with the satellite, deciding on power consumption, moving frequency around, deciding how much revenue is possible and pushing it to see if theres a higher performance possible from the satellite than it's designed to deliver.

Liftoff
Williams said that Avanti has already signed up a number of service providers in Ireland to deliver the service, which will cost around 25 a month. Across Europe, Avanti has signed partnerships with 60 telecoms companies.

Tonight, when the HYLAS 1 satellite lifts off on the Ariane 5 rocket, Williams will be present in French Guiana, at the European space port where he will have two duties to give a speech and be pushed into a swimming pool.

Williams explained that Avanti was formed 10 years by himself and his business partner, astrophysicist David Bestwick.

Avanti, he said, is listed on the London Stock Exchange with a stg750m capitalisation. We have two satellites fully financed and the second will be launched in early 2012 to enable us to provide more capacity into the Middle East and Africa.

Our intention is to finance and build more satellites to secure early mover advantage. If we get four satellites launched theres a reasonable chance of Avanti becoming a FTSE 100 company.

Williams is confident he can do it, and he certainly has the pedigree to prove it. My earliest investments have made 15 times their money and the latest investment delivered a 50pc return in less than a year.

He concluded by saying that at present brokers are assuming Avanti will deliver 2 earnings per share. But stg40 could be achievable, he said.

HYLAS 2 fully financed and on schedule for launch in Spring 2012
Excellent progress with sales on both satellites

Financial highlights
Revenue of GBP5.82 million (2009: GBP8.04 million), falling as legacy
businesses activity ceased in preparation for HYLAS 1 launch
Loss after tax GBP1.93 million, better than expectations (2009: profit

Commenting on the results, John Brackenbury, CBE, Chairman said:

"As the Chairman of a company in possession of an in orbit satellite I have
great pleasure in presenting Avanti Communications Group plc's results for the
year ended 30 June 2010. The achievement of a start up company in launching a
satellite is very rare. Avanti now has one satellite in orbit and a second
launching in a little over a year, a very strong balance sheet with no debt
service payments or cash flow covenants falling due until December 2012, huge
untapped markets and a quite thrilling opportunity to create a company of
genuine scale."

Avanti Communications Group plc

Contract Win

Avanti Communications (LSE: AVN), the broadband satellite operator, announces two contract wins.

Avanti has signed contracts with Access Intelligence PLC (AIM:ACC) and Fitzrovia IT Services for the sale of the Patented Business Internet Continuity range of products to be delivered from the newly launched HYLAS 1 satellite, Europe's first Ka Band satellite.

Avanti's Business Internet Continuity service (which has global patent protection) uses an enhanced version of its satellite broadband product to provide disaster recovery telecoms services to businesses telecom cable users. In the event that the primary cable connection is lost, the Avanti service instantly restores connectivity and IP addressing so that locally hosted or cloud applications continue to work seamlessly.

Avanti also announces the result of research into the reliance upon internet connectivity by UK and international enterprises and the costs being incurred by inadequate planning for connectivity failure.

The independent market research commissioned by Avanti Communications and carried out by Redshift Research shows that three quarters of business respondents rely on constant internet access but one in four businesses do not include internet connectivity in their disaster recovery plans, with one in three having no back-up connection in case of failure.

David Williams, Chief Executive of Avanti Communications, commented: "We have high hopes for our Business Internet Continuity product since, for the first time, a satellite broadband system is potentially of use to every business in the World regardless of geography. The research we have commissioned has highlighted the significant consequences that businesses face in the event of losing an internet connection. Avanti and its partners can protect companies against those risks."

Commenting upon the new contract, Charles Lass, Managing Director at Access Intelligence ControlPoint, comments, "This research reaffirmed our view that if your business relies upon Cloud Computing, Business Internet Continuity is a 'must-have' service. We anticipate strong demand for the service from our customers."

Daren Oliver, Managing Director of Fitzrovia IT Limited, said, "As a company that specialises in delivering advice and solutions for Cloud Computing, Business Continuity, Disaster Recovery and Virtualisation, this new service from Avanti enables Fitzrovia to offer resilience and continuity around its internet connectivity and therefore helps Fitzrovia deliver a complete continuity of IT service around its product range."

I suspect the retracement is about complete, albeit something of a surprise the SP has fallen quite as much as it has, especially with the raft of contracts wins since the successful launch. I binned my two remaining SB positions at 728p, one flat and one in profit, not because I expected this fall, but to free up margin for some other positions.

Hopefully, I'll be back for more in the not to distant future. Good luck to current holders, although I don't think luck will need to play much part.

Contract Win

Avanti Communications (AIM: AVN), the broadband satellite operator, is pleased to announce a new contract win with TigrisNet Ltd, the international satellite service provider. TigrisNet previously bought capacity on both HYLAS 1 and HYLAS 2, but as a result of expanding demand has increased its commitment to the HYLAS 2 satellite with a further 5 year contract worth an additional $12.2 million. This, together with the first contract announced in December last year, brings the total value of commitments with TigrisNet to over $27 million.

This extended contract will enable TigrisNet to meet the expected growth in the Iraqi telecommunications market as greater competition is introduced and economic activity builds.

TigrisNet is the leading VSAT (Internet via Satellite) provider in Iraq providing a range of services that covers clients from every sector, including Government bodies to SMEs and local ISPs. TigrisNet is also the market leader in Video Conferencing and VoIP.

Commenting, David Williams, Avanti Chief Executive, said:

"I am delighted that HYLAS 2 together with TigrisNet will be playing such a crucial role in the growth of Iraq's telecommunications infrastructure, bringing new opportunities for the government, businesses and individuals to create exciting services that deliver value to the economy and enhance peoples' lives. We look forward to a long and rewarding relationship with TigrisNet."

Dr Raeid Nasser, CEO of TigrisNet , commented:

"I am convinced that the growth of Ka band based VSAT services will be strong and sustainable. It offers the opportunity to deliver significant improvements in high speed broadband connectivity to homes, businesses and institutions in Iraq and the wider region for years to come. This is why I am very pleased to be working with Avanti Communications whose delivery of the HYLAS 2 Ka band satellite in 2012 will ensure that TigrisNet will be able to continue to develop and deliver market beating services to its growing customer base."

Also Prime Satellite Broadband, an existing customer, has signed an extended contract for more capacity and extending the commitment from three years to five years.

Commenting, David Williams, Avanti Chief Executive, said:

Taking a bit of a hammering today.

tabasco - 10 Feb 2011 10:18 - 234 of 382

Kim.the recent news and the SP dont correlateI have weird adverse tendencies to smash into bets that are made to appear direend of the daythose bets make me lucky more times than not

I feel lucky here!

kimoldfield - 10 Feb 2011 10:59 - 235 of 382

And jolly good luck to you Tabby!

I feel that there has been a lot of disappointment with regard to the size of the contracts the company has acquired to date. Frankly they haven't been outstanding. I know that it is still in the early stages and that more cash will flow in but it may be that some investors are having second thoughts. The upside for AVN will come mainly after the successful launch of Hylas 2, also on the positive side, there cannot be too much in the way of maintenance costs for the actual satellites, nobody is going to go up there to give them a polish are they?! Just my opinion, which could well be utter crap. :o)

tabasco - 10 Feb 2011 12:09 - 236 of 382

Kim.they have a very lucrative B2B they are selling a service product that could make a vast difference to already affluent areas they call all the shots.I like that!
It was only December when we had the Preliminary Report. Daniel Stewart raised their target to 2519p from 1111p the very next daythey must have been impressed? The SP was 7 and risingsince that date we have had an additional 13 contract wins.We expect to sell out HYLAS 1 capacity within the planned three years The Chairman statedwe have a very strong balance sheet with no debt service payments or cash flow covenants falling due until December 2012, huge untapped markets and a quite thrilling opportunity to create a company of genuine scale."

KimI dont complicate things.that will do for me!

--->ALL

I have tried holding on to all my shares for the long term as I was convinced of the long term investment potential here. I have not been able to keep up with all the posts of late, but given the recent disproportionate falls I decided to try to catch up and have read the last 100 posts or so.

From that I need to ask those of you that keep up with this story on a daily basis for some help.

It seems clear from the posts I have read that it is being claimed that a hedge fund is shorting shares and that a certain shorting fat twat (who has long needed a good glassing and a blade stuck deep in him to soak his gargantuan gut in loads of free flowing claret) has also been passing on false info posing as 'research' on the company that his mouthpiece at T1ps has seen fit to counter.

Has any of this been posted publicly and if so, can someone please direct me to the relevant posts?

I also think it is disgraceful (if indeed it is a true response) for the CEO of AVN to be gloating at how such market manipulations have helped him buy loads of shares at a false price, He should be thinking instead of the many long suffering shareholders who do not have the level of info at their possession that he has to make buying (or selling) decisions and who have instead, been seriously burned by such actions. The guy comes across as a bit of a tool in this case I'm sorry to say.

Regards,

THE COUNT!

Dils "rules are rules" statement should be applauded.
Whether its for a reduced profit, or for a loss, a stop is a stop is a stop!
I've traded these quite a few times, i wouldn't "invest" until they are profit making though.
Only way to go from here is to follow the trend.. and remember, dont just buy and sell maybe consider add or reduce or reverse to your long or short position!!!

For once I am in agreement with SC/EK. The potential being touted by certain 'advisers' just does not add up I'm afraid. They have been quoting millions of customers for Avanti but it would seem that the customers are not Avanti's but those of the companies who have just paid a relatively small amount for the company's capabilities. I could be wrong, I hope so for the sake of those still invested, but I cannot see a lot of value in the shares at present.

One Giant Leap (of Faith Required)

Our (i.e. Investec dated 24th February 2011) view

With one satellite in the sky, no active commercial service (pre-revenue), much
bigger competitors attacking the same markets (and more competition to
come), we are not convinced Avanti is yet deserving of its 0.5bn market cap.
Management's decision not to answer our key questions and concerns on the
investment case does not inspire confidence. A 15-year leap of faith is
required to create a value story here. We model peer-level mature profitability,
and risk to its achievement, to derive a DCF-based 488p TP. SELL.

Key points

The current share price reflects a belief by the market in the full achievement of
peer-beating profits and cash flows. The market expects sales to reach full
capacity within 3 years on HYLAS 1, and 5 years for HYLAS 2 & 3 post launch.
Execution to this plan is now crucial to merely justify the current valuation.
n Any potential value story for Avanti, however, remains one of long-term
performance, and here we have some concerns. At the interims announcement
we moved our recommendation from Sell to Under Review to reflect an apparent
strength in the headline order book and pipeline of business, and in order to
pursue answers to several material questions with management which might help
us revisit the investment case.
n With a major "option" in the order book and few recent contract announcements
the future may not be as rosy as the market believes.
n Avanti's decision not to answer our questions doesn't help. We highlight our
questions herein, and with the risks and uncertainties still lingering we reinstate
our Sell recommendation and our new DCF-based 488p price target.

Questions for investors to ask management

In the course of our research into the investment case for Avanti we posed
several questions to management which we believe are crucial to valuing the
company. Avanti management has declined to answer these questions.

We would prefer to be in a position of possessing all the material facts, but we
are not, and we believe there are many risks and uncertainties regarding this
investment that deserve closer attention. We are not dismissive of the
potential value story that Avanti could represent, if all goes to plan but many
others have posited this story and we believe the risks have not achieved a
suitable airing. We are therefore publishing this note to highlight the
questions we think investors should ask when considering any current, or
future, holding.

Exactly what is Avantis definition of backlog?

At the recent interims, Avanti moved from a publication of the proportion of next 12
months of capacity sold on its satellites, to a reflection of the contract order book, or
backlog. We were surprised at the scale of the backlog in the interims and thus
undertook a full and detailed analysis of all the contract announcements made by
Avanti since April 2007. This is illustrated in Table 1.
It is difficult to simply add up the backlog due to a number of factors: the lack of
complete information; the fact that several contracts span both HYLAS 1 and 2;
many contracts span several years, some of which are coming to the end of their
original contract length (with no sign yet of renewal); and the fact that some of these
contracts relate to projects, rather than satellite capacity.
Is not almost half the contract backlog merely an option?
It is notable, however, that the largest item in the backlog to date - a 113.4m threeyear
deal with a Western European Government for the 900MHz steerable beam on
HYLAS 2 - constitutes nearly half this backlog, and yet is no more than a Call option.
This is not therefore an irrevocable commitment to take up Avantis service. We do
not believe this should be presented as part of the backlog, but rather it should be
mentioned as a potential additional element, conditional upon the customer taking
up the option. Are there any other options in the contract backlog, and if so, how
much?
What happened to the pre-sold capacity metric?
It is also unclear exactly what progress has been made on sales more recently. We
understand that Avanti had effectively pre-sold 25% of its HYLAS 1 capacity since
the start of last summer (we assume this metric is measured by Avanti on a 12-
month prospective basis, rather than for the satellite life). Where is this metric now?
We suspect it may not have budged much, if at all. The initial flurry of contract
announcements immediately post the HYLAS 1 launch looks to us more like
confirmations of previously uncommitted pre-sold capacity rather than any new
deals.

Gentlemen,

I stress that all the above is written and issued by Investec. Please also note that the 488p target price has been achieved (this morning). I have not yet received a TP update. However, I am not buying to close since momentum is now with the bears. Besides, I think the economic outlook for AVN is not good.

"Yesterday was also a fun day for Avanti Communications AVN). Evil Knievil went publicly short posting comments on ADVFN (I refused to run them on t1ps as they contained just too many factual errors). What I had not realised was that his calculations, such as they were, had a decimal point in the wrong place. His informant was clearly illiterate (the note EK posted was strewn with errors) and also (see below) technically clueless. I had not realised at the time that he was innumerate as well. An interesting combination for someone purporting to be an investment analyst. What with also confusing MegaHertz and MegaBits the sums were not to put too fine a point on it all wrong. But once the old boy has an idea in his head there is no stopping him so off he went. Call me cynical but there was only one way to react we bought a stack more Avanti for the SF t1ps Growth Fund.

Now some CEOs huff and puff and threaten lawyers when Evil goes off shorting and publishes factually incorrect material in support of his claims. But David Williams of Avanti has more style than that. A Welshie with style and flair, whatever next. Williams responded by buying 100,000 of Avanti shares in the market (his chairman also bought 50,000) which is a material sum for him. But as a coup de grace he asked me to pass on a note to Evil:

Dear Tom

Please extend an invitation to lunch in Shoreditch on my behalf to Mr Cawkwell. His informant, whom I presume is not an astrophysicist, got his decimal point in the wrong place and as a result I was able to buy 100,000 of shares at the wrong price so it seems polite to thank him.

David

That is pretty cool as you would expect from a CEO based in Rivington Street (Avantis offices are in the street after which RSH is named). A few more shorts on the basis of maths with decimal points in the wrong place plus a stream of factual errors and Evil will start to need free food if he is not to waste away.

On a wider level, when a CEO invests 1000 or even 5,000 in buying shares in his company I regard that as window dressing. But when he or she writes out a cheque which is a very material part of his annual salary that can ONLY mean he ( or she) thinks the shares have real value. The Rivington Street CEOs have made their intentions clear."

The last Cenkos report was this:

Decimal point in the wrong place

Avantis share price has fallen to a seven month low on the back of the aggressive
promotion of ideas based on misunderstandings of HYLAS 1 and HYLAS 2 and
Avantis competitive positioning. These concerns rest on a number of inaccuracies
regarding the satellites specifications and the premise that Avanti will compete headto-
head with Eutelsats Ka-Sat. This provides an excellent buying opportunity for
investors as both these positions are wrong and we are confident the shares will rally
strongly on the back of inaugural HYLAS 1 sales next month and on-going contract
wins. We are confident that investors will quadruple their investment over the next
two years. BUY
Capacity comparisons unfounded
Commentators have suggested that Eutelsats Ka-Sat has 70 GB of capacity versus HYLAS
1s 3 GB. Comparing GBs with GHz is not a straightforward comparison. HYLAS 1 & 2 will
have 11.25 GHz of capacity compared with Ka-Sats 40 GHz, implying that Ka-Sat is 3.6x
bigger. However, comparisons should be made strictly on the basis of a satellites forward
path capacity. In this respect, Ka-Sat is a symmetrical satellite with 20 GHz of upward path
and 20 GHz of forward path. However, HYLAS 1 & 2 will be asymmetrical with 8 GHz of
forward path versus 3.25 GHz of upward path. This simply reflects the fact that consumers
download far more than they upload from the internet. As a result Ka-Sat will only be 2.5x
that of HYLAS 1 & 2. Furthermore, the differential between the two will be less than the
nameplate capacity and HYLAS 1 is a flexible payload covering a greater geographic area
that includes North Africa and the Middle East. This should enable Avanti to achieve
superior utilisation rates.
Revenue assumptions are therefore wrong
Following on from this, the bears have then claimed that given the discrepancy in capacity,
HYLAS1 will be unable to meet our annualised revenue run rate of 45m as Eutelsats
previous CEO guided that Ka-Sat will deliver 100m of sales in 2013. Hughes, which was
recently purchased by EchoStar, has delivered $183m of consumer broadband sales from a
satellite just twice as big as HYLAS 1. Avanti still need to sign-up new contracts to achieve
our FY12 forecasts, however due to the strength of their offering we have a high degree of
confidence that they will outperform.
Pricing pressure unlikely given market potential
Numerous independent studies have highlighted strong demand for broadband in rural
areas across the Middle East, N Africa and Europe. The European Commission estimates
that 30m homes cannot receive effective broadband through existing terrestrial
infrastructure. Given that HYLAS 1 & 2 and Ka-Sat will only be able to serve approximately
2.5m homes between them, it is unlikely that either operator will incur pricing pressure due
to direct competition. Furthermore, Eutelsat is largely focused on France whereas Avanti is selling capacity to the wider European market.

I still don't get this. This is from the AVN website:-

"Do you live in a broadband notspot? Are you so far away from your local exchange that your DSL access speeds are low? If so, Avanti satellite broadband can help you.

Avanti satellite broadband is sold and delivered through our pan-European partner network. But you can register your interest in receiving Avanti satellite broadband products with us. Once HYLAS 1 completes its testing phase, we will get your local partner to contact you to discuss how they can help you. It's that simple.

There is no obligation to buy, and you can also enter our competition to win a year's free broadband."

To me, the important thing here is :- "Avanti satellite broadband is sold and delivered through our pan-European partner network."

How much is AVN going to get out of their technology? I appreciate what Tabby has posted and I don't intend to talk this share down but unless AVN sell to individuals rather than 'partners' I cannot see how they can maximise their potential. It maybe of course, that they have a different selling strategy for Hylas 2.

Whatever, I am baffled and am torn between re-investing or leaving well alone. My heart says the former, my head the latter.

Uncorked my favourite red to do a bit of musing. :o)

Avanti Communications Group plc

-- Completion of In Orbit Testing and Service Launch

-- Contract Win

Avanti Communications Group plc (LSE: AIM), the broadband satellite operator, is pleased to report that it formally completed in orbit testing of the HYLAS 1 satellite yesterday.

The testing process confirmed that HYLAS 1 is working in conformance with specification and, in some areas, delivering higher performance than originally specified. The satellite lifetime is expected to be at least six months greater than planned and the available power is several percentage points better than specification. This will translate into improved service quality, flexibility and usable capacity.

The provision of services on HYLAS 1 will now commence. The first live customer service in the UK will be installed next week. Avanti has a test customer base of 5,000 end users whose service is delivered with leased Ku band capacity. The migration of these customers to HYLAS 1 will begin on April 4(th) . Avanti has over 60 Virtual Network Operator customers in 16 countries in Europe who have bought capacity. Many of them are also migrating existing end user customers from leased Ku band capacity on other satellites and this migration also begins on April 4(th) .

Commenting, David Williams, Chief Executive of Avanti Communications, said:

"The in orbit testing phase of HYLAS 1 has been a complete success and puts us in a strong position for future growth.

"With Europe's first fully operational broadband satellite, Avanti will now provide a range of satellite data communications services to consumers, enterprise and governmental organisations across the UK and Europe. In such a vast market with so much growth in data demand, and a strong customer base already committed, we are highly confident of achieving rapid commercial success for this powerful and flexible satellite."

Contract Win

Avanti is also pleased to announce that yesterday it signed a seven year contract with a new Virtual Network Operator Customer for the sale of 80 Mb of capacity (with volume beginning at a lower level in year one and rising to 80Mb to match the Customer's expansion in end users). The contract, which commands pricing which exceeds market expectations, is worth EUR7.1m over the seven year term. The customer has approximately 3,000 satellite broadband end user installations in Europe which currently use Ku band capacity on a competitors' satellite. The Customer will migrate that existing client base to HYLAS 1 and then grow its business further with Avanti. For reasons of commercial sensitivity during this migration period the Customer is not named.

Commenting on the contract win, David Williams, Chief Executive of Avanti Communications, said:

"The signing of this contract is significant since it further demonstrates that expert customers in Europe choose to work with Avanti. We offer a flexible, service oriented approach and reliable and well regarded technology. Avanti has announced a steady flow of contract wins in the last two years which underpins our confidence in fully utilising our satellites at attractive prices."

goldfinger - 24 Mar 2011 07:39 - 304 of 382

Told you cyners...........

Here's Tom Winnifriths latest thoughts on Avanti....

Over the past couple of weeks the market valuation of Avanti Communication - a stock which we still believe to be worth 20 - has taken a material knock following some derisory commentary from some well known Shorters. Without doubt the persons in question have made a number of good calls in the past but this truly is a blunder. His argument (supplied by what we reckon is the Analyst who recently put out a Sell recommendation on the stock) is based upon numerous factual errors and poorly researched content. Mr Knievil also appears to have a few problems with decimal points. It has been posted around on a number of Bulletin Boards and has meant that the company's market cap has tumbled from roughly 514.2 million, to 405 million in a matter of days.

We however read the above's comments with amazement and the fact that we actually do our own research meant we were happy to take advantage of the opportunity that was given to us and added to our holdings. We were not the only ones. On 23 February 2011 in accordance with listed companies's continuing obligations it was announced that the company Chairman and CEO had between them hovered up 150,000 worth of shares at a price of roughly 550p. On 25th February directors moved in again with six figure purchases.

The bear argument was based around the fact that Avanti will missed its earnings forecasts and will not be able to compete with the what the above believed to be greater capacity offered by a competitor, EUTELSAT. It seems the Analyst behind this poorly constructed argument got his decimal point in the wrong place stating the EUT's capacity was 23 times that of Avanti's instead of actually roughly 2.3 times taking into account both HYLAS 1 and 2 (the above failed to recognised this). Regardless of this however more is not always better in regards to broadband capacity, and a comparable example in the US shows that Avanti's increased flexibility of application and broader coverage will materially pay off in the long run. Raw capacity lost out to product innovation in the US when Hughes Communications was sold for a markedly higher price than that of its competitor Wild Blue. In actual fact Wild Blue's product offering is pretty similar to that of EUT.

It is however disappointing that poorly constructed arguments can have such an influence on market valuations. This however is an example of the short term and volatile aspects of investment, and is exactly why we do not focus on the short term price movements of our portfolio. What we do is identify value, buy at sensible prices and then hold. As we have said numerous times before on a very simple DCF basis we reckon that Avanti is worth 20 per share. We are not alone in this belief and although we pay little attention to outside analyst coverage all bar one of the current notes rate Avanti as a strong buy operating within in a rapidly developing sector. Interims for the 6 months ended 31 December 2010 were not indicative of the company's progression but they did report that the current order book stands at 229 million and that currently the pipeline of HYLAS 1 and 2 transactions is valued at 389 million.

Increasingly once Avanti moves into full commercial service operations, which is expected shortly, we are expecting an influx of more news detailing further big name sign ups to the service. The company is operating within a niche market with extremely high barriers to entry and limited price competitiveness and has already won serious institutional backing. We expect that demand for the company's service will be consistently increased due to the flexible applications of the product offering which differentiates the company from its competitors. It is admittedly disappointing that such poorly backed arguments can have this sort of impact on the share price, but what we do believe is that the value here will even

Dil...all your assumptions are of course perfectly true...EK does have a lot of clout and influence...another little piece of evidence how short selling is extremely harmful to many good companies and investors... whilst rewarding the cunning villain!...
Dil...I have traded a few times with AVN but I am still a good few quid down...these shares are now locked away to avoid temptation...
EK based a lot of his play on information from an informant...here are some answer from a respected guy....

Your informants information on Hotbird 6 is seriously flawed. He may know less about Hotbird 6 than you think, very few customers of Tooway are currently being served by Ka Band, which is causing an issue for Eutelsat in the change over from Ku to Ka, as your informant will know these customers have to now duplicate their costs incurred in making the switch. This is not in anyway being subsidised by Eutelsat, which of course is causing issues for customers, but I am sure your informant knows this.

I have no issues with anyone short, best of luck to you. As I said earlier, the issue here is not whether Avanti can charge premium prices, it is whether at those prices it can fill its satellites. I am confident it will, but the coming weeks will determine this issue.

To be fair to him and his analyst friend, the points raised were valid, if you did not understand the Market . In my humble opinion, the analysis SC is relying on is fundamentally flawed in the following ways:

1) the " premium" pricing Avanti are charging. It is easy to compare a package offering a 4gb per month download allowance with Avanti's package with unlimited download and say Avanti are more expensive. But it is also quite stupid, different value proposition, there will be those that find 4gb enough so will choose Tooway, others will choose Avanti.

2) Market size is the dominant factor here, Michel de Rosen has stated continuously that Market demand far exceeds current capacity and is likely to
beyond 2020, continually stating that as the mobile, home entertainment and computing markets converge, so greater pressure is applied to existing resources.
The basic theory of supply and demand states that where supply exceeds demand,
prices fall to find an equilibrium, when demand exceeds supply, prices rise to
find an equilibrium. Competitive pricing is not necessary in this Market and is
destructive to all companies, and leads to value erosion and wealth taking.

3) SC'S analyst stated that currently Eutelsat is providing ka band to it's UK
customers through hotbird6. Maybe this analyst should have spoken to Eutelsat
(Tobias Martinez is decent and an ex alumni) regarding the services offered by Hotbird 6. Here is a link which might help
http://www.lyngsat.com/hb6.html

All in all, the analyst that SC Is depending on changed from being very technical to pointing out a flaw being Ku instead of Ka on a table in the Cenkos note. Never a good sign to be picking up on such hugely minor points.

Dil...Avanti offer rural broadband which at worst is comparative... military.. and contracts with Hughes largest provider of enterprise services in the World... Avanti offer a price plan with no limit on data used. Eutelstat adjust their pricing based on data used. I think this could take time against EK...but add all the valuations up...the average still looks very tasty!!! true value will return...

Avanti Communications Group plc (LSE: AVN), the satellite operator, announces that it has been successful in its claim against Space Exploration Technologies Corporation ruled upon under binding arbitration by the American Arbitration Association in New York. Avanti was awarded the full amount of refund it claimed under the contract, being $7,566,013 and was also awarded interest from the date of the claim.

Trading Update

Full Commercial Service on HYLAS 1 successfully commenced on April 4th. The process of migrating the base of approximately 5,000 Avanti end users currently using leased Ku band capacity onto HYLAS 1 has proceeded to plan, with 10% already migrated.

Several of our Service Providers also have similar bases of end user customers who are currently using interim leased Ku band capacity. Avanti is also assisting these service providers in the migration of their end users to HYLAS 1, which amounts in aggregate to over 20,000 end users.

Finally, we confirmed that successful service launch has met contractual service parameters with all of our customers, confirmed their requirements for modem deliveries from the supplier and updated bandwidth demand.

Based on these results, it is an appropriate time to update the market on sales progress. In 2010, Avanti specified that it was confident of exceeding a target for pre-sales signed by service launch of 25%. This target metric was useful in demonstrating confidence in the ability to pre-sell meaningful amounts of capacity before launch.

Avanti is pleased to confirm that at service launch, having confirmed contracts and orders, the peak utilisation rate under HYLAS 1 aggregate contracts is 35.1% which comfortably exceeding the 25% target set pre-launch. Henceforth, Avanti will regularly report the industry standard backlog metric.

The backlog statistics are now GBP139.0m for HYLAS 1, GBP28.4m for HYLAS 2. Avanti also notes a GBP113.4m option for HYLAS 2 capacity which is subject to a significant option fee.

Approximately 52% of backlog revenues relates to Enterprise and Military applications and customers (not including the HYLAS 2 option), with the balance relating to SME and Consumer broadband. Avanti expects backhaul business to soon become a significant percentage of backlog.

Avanti is also pleased to report that the increased credibility generated from successful service launch has resulted in an increase to the pipeline. The pipeline now stands at GBP427.2m.

Quoting broker forecasts is also irrevelant , go look at the forecasts by brokers 18 months ago !!!

I dont like the guy because of the way he tries manipulating small time private investors but so far EK has made a fortune shorting this after his mate Tom Winnifrith (wot a useless tw*t) kept tipping it .

Those two and the "Black Prince" (another mate of TW's) who made a fortune out of shorting TW's previous tips that he was up to neck in should be investigated , imo , for stock manipulation.

AVN Avanti Communications

Think some have missed this....

AVN

Avanti launched HYLAS 1 in November 2010, it will launch HYLAS 2 in July, and it recently
announced that HYLAS 3 would be launched in 2015. The valuation of Avanti’s shares depends upon
a number of things: the cost of building, launching and running these satellites; the revenues that
each satellite can deliver through sales of transmission capacity; the timing of costs and revenues; the
method and terms of financing; and finally, the value that is placed today upon future profits.
Let me review the progress of the three satellites.
HYLAS 1 was launched in November 2010 and covers Europe. The launch was a success, HYLAS 1
has been performing well and Avanti is on track to sell out the 3GHz of capacity by April 2014, defying
some critics who argued that it would not be able to compete effectively with the big incumbent
satellite operator Eutelsat.
Eutelsat’s Chief Executive believes that the European market is at least six times as large as the
current combined capacity of both itself and Avanti. Eutelsat has the advantage of greater capacity,
though Avanti’s more advanced Ka-Band technology compensates somewhat for this. While attention
has been focussed upon the delivery of broadband services to customers in remote locations, Avanti has
also been developing other markets, for instance for corporate data, as an emergency backup to existing
broadband networks, the mobile backhaul market and satellite distribution of films to cinemas.
New contracts and better contracts
The attractions of Avanti’s services have been the subject of much debate, but we now have firm
evidence. Avanti says that a full HYLAS 1 should generate approximately £50m in annual revenue
when it reaches ‘full saturation’ at the end of the third year in service (i.e. by April 2014). This is in
line with original budgets (when I first tipped Avanti in March 2008, I suggested that annual revenues
would be £34m, based on prices being achieved at the time).
Thanks to contracts already in the bag, Avanti expects to achieve sales of £17m in its first full year
of sales, to June 2012, with the possibility that this could be exceeded if other significant contracts are
signed in time.
With £23m of new contract wins announced in the last two months for HYLAS 1 and HYLAS 2, sales
momentum has been increasing and Avanti has reduced the length of time within which it expects to
achieve full capacity utilization for HYLAS 2 from five years to four. Although the original five-year
figure included some contingency, this is an expression of confidence.
With capacity of 8.3GHz, compared to the 3GHz of HYLAS 1, HYLAS 2 covers the Middle East
and North Africa although it could also be used as an overflow capacity for HYLAS 1. Its steerable
antenna is attracting attention from the military while HYLAS 2’s qualities of resilience, encryption,
security and quality are enabling it to sell on the basis of quality and technology fe atures and benefits
rather than just merely on price. Accordingly, Avanti is ‘confident that our capacity can be filled at the
expected prices’.
Avanti’s cracking deal on its next satellite
Clearly, the forthcoming July launch of HYLAS 2 carries some level of risk, but all being well Avanti
should soon have two operating satellites. A third, HYLAS 3, is now scheduled for launch in 2015.
Originally Avanti had planned to launch a third large satellite financed by bank borrowings secured
against advance sales. However, the tightening of lending criteria by the banks has made this option
increasingly unattractive and so Avanti has jumped at the chance to pursue an alternative.
At the end of 2011, however, the opportunity arose for it to launch HYLAS 3 on board a new
European Space Agency (ESA) satellite scheduled for 2015. The 4GHz capacity of this third satellite is
less than the capacity that Avanti had originally envisaged for HYLAS 3, the launch will be later, and to
secure this arrangement Avanti has had to raise £75m of cash through a share issue.
The deal is nonetheless very attractive to Avanti though. The sharing of costs with the ESA means
that for each additional GHz of capacity Avanti will pay just £18.8m on HYLAS 3, compared to £41.1m
for HYLAS 1 and £33.7m for HYLAS2. Besides that, the ESA is responsible for any cost overruns. As with HYLAS 2, HYLAS 3 will be aimed at emerging markets with a fully steerable cluster of beams that can be deployed anywhere in Africa or the Middle East.
How to price a space-age company
Assuming they all go successfully into operation, how much money might Avanti make from these three satellites?
At full capacity, which should be achieved by mid-2014, HYLAS 1 should be producing annual revenues of c.£50m. After deducting the operating and other costs, and the depreciation charge of c.£7.5m, HYLAS 1 should be generating a profit before interest and tax of c.£30m. This level of profitability is expected to stay fairly constant over HYLAS 1’s expected life of 15 years and, discounting these future cash flows at a rate of 8.5% broker Daniel Stewart calculates a value today of £310m, which is worth c.278p per share.
On the same basis, Daniel Stewart values the larger HYLAS 2 at £684m, equivalent to 612p per share and HYLAS 3 at £551m, or 493p per share. That makes a total of £13.83p per share to which Daniel Stewart adds the discounted value of Avanti’s projected 2031 cash balance of £784m – to arrive at a total of £20.17 per share.
Another calculation that we can make is of Avanti’s net asset value, a figure that simply looks at Avanti’s assets less liabilities today and ignores any future profits. At 30 September Avanti had net assets (excluding intangibles) of £195.2m, to which we can add the £75m raised in the recent share issue. Dividing the total of £270m by the 111.7m issued shares gives a number of c.242p per share, to which we can add the value of Avanti’s orbital slots. That this space real estate has a value was demonstrated last October when Brazil held an auction of orbital slots and reportedly received a bid of $88.3m for a single slot.
So the share price looks very well supported by net assets while the future profit projections are, in my view, not especially risky. Satellites are built and launched under fixed price contracts, and operating costs thereafter are low and unlikely to be subject to significant change.
So the big swing factor is revenues. There is little risk that the sky will become oversupplied with satellites and despite some fantasies about other, wireless, means of transmitting data to remote locations there is unlikely to be a genuinely competing technology at least within the 15-year life of Avanti’s satellites.
We also have some circumstantial evidence. HYLAS 2 was funded by the USA Export-Import Bank and the French agency Coface, two government bodies that are notoriously rigorous and cautious. Avanti’s directors have been regular buyers of the shares and would hardly have done so if they had any serious doubts about the business. Paul Walsh, the Chief Executive of Diageo, has joined the Avanti Board. Avanti has stated its intention of moving from AIM to the Main List of the Stock Exchange. And in October Avanti’s Chairman John Brackenbury, alluding to ‘some short-term speculators who have attacked the share price’ said:
“It is clear that Avanti owns scarce and valuable resources in one of the few lightly competed sub-sectors of the global telecoms industry which should see us create very significant value. I see great opportunity in emerging markets telecoms and our advantages in these markets are significant. I am grateful for the resolute support of our core long-term investors. Patience and confidence in the quite exceptional and unique advantages Avanti has will be rewarded. Our pipeline of new business gives us confidence in our ability to meet expectations.”

RHPS Verdict: None of these statements and actions are consistent with a business that is failing to deliver. In my view, the case for Avanti is as strong as ever. I am looking forward to the launch of HYLAS 2 in July and to this time next year when Avanti should be earning good money from two operating satellites. My share price target remains £15, so BUY UP TO 750p.

From T1ps:-

Why we are buying more Avanti Communications*
31 Days ago (2012-02-24 13:33:02)
I met up with Avanti (AVN) the other day and have been pondering this for a while but our SF t1ps Smaller Companies Growth Fund has been nibbling away at the shares and here is why.

I can understand why Evil shorted it. On a current year PE of a zillion or whatever he was able to make a compelling case. It was all the more compelling given that he blinded us with science – a raft of factual inaccuracies. So I just stick to facts.

HYLAS 1 is now in orbit. Capacity is filling up gently and is now, I reckon, at c.40% (of capacity sold). It should be at 50% during this year and will be fully sold out 3 years after launch.

HYLAS 2 launches in June/July. After 3 months of testing it goes operational and is already 10% sold out. Again it will be fully sold out by September 2015.

HYLAS 3 is now fully funded to launch in a couple of years. It should thus be fully sold out by late 2017.

Avanti has fairly fixed PLC costs and so will – by my sums – be at cash breakeven within a couple of months. Thereafter as each month goes by and more capacity is sold on Hylas 1 & 2 (and eventually 3) it just generates more cash. I do not really care what EBITDA is this year to June 30th (I think it will be a tiny positive) or indeed next year or the year after (c.£30 million and c.£80 million is my private forecast). The point is what it should be by, say 2018, when HYLAS 3 is fully operational. I estimate the number then will be c£200 million (earnings per share of c130p!).

At 263p Avanti is capitalised at c£290 million. It has debt (when fully drawn) of c£200 million. So the Enterprise Value is £490 million. By 2018 the company will have chucked off a couple of hundred million pounds of free cashflow and so – were that to be used to repay debt - it would be trading on an EV/EBITDA multiple of 1.5. Now to put that in perspective, Inmarsat, which is today where Avanti will be in five years time, is on a multiple of around 8. That implies a share price in a few years of at least £15 for Avanti.

There are other ways of looking at Avanti which might lead you to expect a £20 share price. I am not sure. But what I do expect is that:

a) Over the next few months there will be a constant diet of announcements on contract wins. The key point is that we are now at inflexion point so that every new contract drops through to the bottom line.

b) We will see some excitement when HYLAS 2 launches in June. This time the directors will not feed the bears by selling shares thereafter.

c) The maths are just compelling and so I really do not give a jot what the share price is next week or next month. We currently have 3% of the growth fund in Avanti and we are increasing that holding with a stream of buys. We are happy to wait.

But what I do expect is that:

a) Over the next few months therTom Winnifrith of T1ps.cpom writes: At 275p Avanti is capitalised at c£307 million. It has debt (when fully drawn) of c£200 million. So the Enterprise Value is £507 million. avn260312.gif

Zak writes: It would appear that while the technicals of Avanti in recent weeks have been pointing to the shares hammering out a floor, the end of what has been a relatively cruel pullback for the stock remains a difficult one to call / trade. What helps at the moment is that in addition to the tentative rebound off a falling August support line, there is also clear bullish divergence in the RSI window. On this basis one would suggest that while there is no end of day close back below 240p we can finally look for an initial test of former early December support at 280p.

Noticed this one after GF flagged the rise on the 27th. Thought i would post my thoughts on here as its one i will now watch myself. I don't know the first thing about the company so this is purely a charting perspective, but it looks like having completed an impulsive move. I would expect a bit of chop for a few days, while it pulls back correctively in 3 waves where i hope it will form a flagline, look for a minor 'i'&'ii' to confirm the drop has finished and/or a break of the flagline for a big move up to follow.

As i said, purely speculative according to how i see the chart;

My long spread off 263 now looking rather nice. 250 support did hold as suspected. I'd add another line to the above chart, 27th March, 27th April joined and through to cross roughly in where (ii)? cross sits. I see this as being the start of the new trend line higher.

..Questor share tip: Avanti orbit looks inviting as satellite launch approaches

By Garry White | Telegraph – 14 hours ago
Shares in satellite group Avanti Communications have plunged over the past year and many investors are sitting on losses. What should Questor readers do next?

Avanti Communications 313¾p -14 ¼p Questor says BUY

Avanti sells satellite broadband services to telecoms providers, which then resells the service to households and businesses.

The company's first satellite, HYLAS 1, launched in November (Stuttgart: A0Z24E - news) 2010, is the first superfast broadband satellite launched in Europe (Chicago Options: ^REURUSD - news) .

Avanti's second satellite, called HYLAS 2, is fully funded and is scheduled for launch in the next few months. This satellite will extend Avanti's coverage to Africa and the Middle East.

The third satellite, HYLAS 3, is currently in the design phase, but this is also fully funded to launch.

Things have been going reasonably well at the group as a trading update released yesterday showed but the shares took a bath last year on negative sentiment.

The company was subject to what is known as a "bear raid". A high profile City player took a significant short position in the shares and then proceeded to make this fact known to the market.

Also last year, broker Numis had to issue an apology after publishing misleading statements about the group relating to contracts signed with clients.

"Numis has raised doubts about the contract Avanti Communications has signed with TigrisNet in widely distributed emails and conversations. Numis apologises if the previous communication led to a misunderstanding," the City broker said.

Unfortunately, mud sticks. This sort of thing can become a self-fulfilling prophecy and the share price has sunk. However, what is more important now is the future.

The company has undertaken a fund-raising and needs to raise no more cash to complete its launch plans. Indeed, at the interim stage Avanti had £26m of cash on its balance sheet. The launch of HYLAS 2, which will happen in a 30-day window from June 30, should be the next positive catalyst going forward. The group also plans to move from Aim to a full listing next year.

Avanti confirmed that in the four-month period to April 30 it had added £42.3m of backlog. These are contracts signed for bandwidth on both HYLAS 1 and 2. This brought the total backlog to £213m and Avanti said its pipeline of potential sales stood at £529m.

The company needs to make about £11m of sales each month to meet its target of filling capacity on HYLAS 1 by 2014 and HYLAS 2 by 2016. The figures indicate it is on track to do just that.

The company is currently loss-making, but it is expected to move into profit next year, with earnings rising quickly thereafter. The 2013 multiple is a very heady 163 times, but this falls to 9.3 in 2014 and just 4.4 in 2015.

The shares were first recommended on January 8, 2010, at 467½p and they are now down 33pc compared with a market up 1pc. The shares have drifted from a high of 735p. Questor noted that the investment could be very volatile and it was "not one on which to bet the farm" and that view still stands. The shares are now looking pretty cheap, should the group manage to fill all of its satellites. City analysts have some pretty punchy targets, with the average of the three analysts monitored by Bloomberg being £16.50, a staggering 430pc above the current levels.

Questor maintains a buy stance and looks forward to the launch of HYLAS 2 as the next major catalyst.

Avanti Communications Group plc

Preliminary Results Announcement

London - 10 October 2012. Avanti Communications Group plc (AIM: AVN, "Avanti" or "the Company"), the satellite operator, has published today its unaudited preliminary results for the year ended 30 June 2012.

Operational Highlights

· Announcement today that HYLAS 2 has entered service, open for business on all beams

· 22% more capacity available for sale than originally expected due to technical successes (11GHz versus 9GHz)

· HYLAS 3 fully financed and under construction for launch in 2015

Financial Highlights

· Revenues and Other Operating Income increased by 246% to £15.0 million (2011: £6.1 million)

· Cash at year end of £76.7 million

· Backlog increased by 57% to £268 million

· Strong sales momentum - the average monthly target of £11m new Backlog continues to be achieved

· Although the phasing of Backlog is more back-ended than expected, existing satellites are expected to be full at current run rate in 2016

Commenting, John Brackenbury, CBE, Avanti Chairman said:

"This has been a year of very strong growth for Avanti. The momentum of launching our second satellite in as many years to expand coverage to a total of 53 countries has created very significant demand. This is now evidenced in our contract backlog which grew by 57% in the year. Within the emerging markets that Avanti serves our flexible and resilient technology is winning business from customers who urgently need reliable, high quality communications.

"The formal launch of service today on HYLAS 2 over Africa and the Middle East gives us access to markets showing high economic and structural growth in demand for telecoms services. We look forward to the continued development of Avanti with growing confidence."

ahoj - 12 Oct 2012 13:01 - 363 of 382

Why has it been falling recently?

Shortie - 12 Oct 2012 13:50 - 364 of 382

Increased backlog plus reduced cash (preliminary results show pre-tax loss growing), theres only so much premium investors will pay over net worth. Once the backlog is reduced and AVN moves to the main market it'll generate interest inline with its peers. Its a volitile waiting game though at the moment, buy on the dips and sell on the ups is what most investors including myself are currently doing 260 buy, 300 sell unless momentum is strong.

humpback321 - 12 Oct 2012 14:10 - 365 of 382

What to do? hold? and wait a year or so to even out or sell and move on?

(Dated 10th July 2013)
Satellite operator Avanti Communications has warned that revenues for the year to the end of June will be below market consensus as a result of timing movements of certain contracts.

It said that revenue guidance for the period included the value of several major contracts in Africa that were expected to close before 30 June 2013 but which are now expected to be completed in the next financial year.

At the same time, since the period end, the revenue due from a contract which was signed during the financial year is no longer assured.

As a result, revenues for the financial year ended 30 June 2013 are likely to be up to £10m below previous market consensus.

The group says: "Sales progress was otherwise encouraging, with particular success in signing contracts with major telecoms and media companies including Vodafone, Technicolor and CNN.

"We are also pleased that the highest quality specialist VSAT service companies are also choosing Avanti, with major new contracts in the year with Speedcast, TTcomm and Bentley Walker amongst others."

Avanti confirms that revenue for the financial year ended 30 June is expected to be approximately $83m. This represents growth in core revenues year-on-year (excluding the spectrum sale in the prior year) of over 35%. EBITDA is expected to be approximately $8m.

But the group is reducing the recurring revenue growth target for FY17 due to the challenging economic backdrop.

Avanti's commercial reputation for high service quality and product innovation is strong, enabling it to win high value contracts with prestigious telecoms companies. In particular, the Group is leading the market in winning cellular backhaul business, and many opportunities are opening up around the EMEA region.

Contract wins in the fourth quarter were over $70m showing commercial traction is building. Cash at year end was $57m.

The economic backdrop is nonetheless challenging. In Africa, ongoing currency depreciation has resulted in the need for the Company to help some smaller broadband service providers with exchange rate adjustments and rework some of their long term commitments. Elsewhere, larger high credit quality telecoms and government customers are demanding longer credit terms, impacting working capital. Given these challenges, the previously guided 50% recurring revenue growth target will be reduced for FY2017 impacting EBITDA. At 2:34pm: (LON:AVN) Avanti Communications Group PLC share price was -33.25p at 26.75p

It would have been very busy in the skies over sub-saharan Africa if facebook satellite had'nt been lunched on the pad. Avanti are putting two Sats up next year', lol and as far as i understand it Avianti find it hard getting payments from the users of their Hylas 2 Satellite covering this area. Face book would give internet connection for free, things do not look good
