From earlier this year.
"The fund raise significantly strengthens Symphony's balance sheet and will
allow us to maintain the quantum growth we have enjoyed over the past few
months. We are now receiving significant interest from a variety of sectors in
our degradable solution to the problems associated with plastic waste and,
following this strengthening of our resources, we are in a much stronger
position to meet the considerable demand for our products."
This last statement shows that corporations are looking seriously at Symphonys products. Yesterdays announcement shows a real coup for the company, as they have walked away from a potential exclusivity contract with no penalties!. Rarely seen IMO.
Bio-degradeable products are appearing everywhere, especially in the consumer disposal market, and Symphony look to be taking a large chunk of this with their own brands.
I believe strongly in the management of the company. I see they have the technical ability and also the qualities required to deal with the financial markets. Too often we see an excellent company with strong technical management, only to see them fail as they have no idea how to deal with the stock market.
That is why I am nominating Symphony plastics as my "tip of the week". If you get in early enough, I believe you could see a potential treble bagger by the end of July.
I would welcome your comments on the above analysis.

VMH,
You are correct!
I knew I had read this before, and I believe the licence is for 15 years, and there was some doubt as to where in the world SYM can market it's products, and if I remeber correctly, i think they can market anywhere except the USA, (but that is my best recollection, and could well be wrong.)

TPP,
SYM have a good product, there is no doubt.
What will either make or break it will surely be the new 9p per plastic bag "environmental tax" to be placed on plastic bags, as has occurred in Eire.
IMHO SYM's bags should be exepmt, as they are envronmentally friendly, as they degrade, and hopefully the governement wil agree.
Then the orders will fly in as all the major supermarkets ditch the non bio degaradable bags, in favour of ones that duty isn't payable on.
A win win situation for the environment and SYM!

Well it appears that there are all sorts of rumours abound with SYM.
Even if no deals signed, I am sure that mid Sept results will be very strong with the Somerfield/Kwik Save deal previously announced.
According to poster on ADVFN (who had chat with his broker as to the reason for the rise) SYM are in discussions with WalMart and also BT - presumably to package telephone directories..
Either way exciting times ahead
All speculation at this point though

Waiting for the int.results which came out last year on 9th September.Company gave three days notice before posting and this could happen again.Buying has been because figures are expected to be good with some help from last year contract wins. This year further contract wins for the degradeable bags and speculation of more good news perhaps when interims are announced is also a reason.I mentioned this share on the penny share thread in august and have made 50% but because of the above reasons I think this one has further to go in the next week or so.

Symphony Plastic Technologies plc
Distribution Agreement - Brazil
Symphony Plastic Technologies plc ('Symphony'), the degradable plastics company, is pleased to announce that it has entered into an exclusive 10 year agreement with RES Brasil S/C LTDA ('RES'), to distribute its d2wTM totally degradable products and additives throughout Brazil. This contract follows several months of successful trials and negotiations for the general distribution, manufacture and marketing of a wide range of totally degradable flexible polythene products.
RES, a Brazilian company, is a pioneer in South America in the manufacture and
commercialisation of biodegradable products associated with composting, water
solubility as well as other environmental solutions for the disposal of waste.
The agreement is for Symphony to supply RES with an unlimited amount of d2wTM
degradable additives to support the sub-licensing of several factories to
manufacture d2wTM branded finished products for use and distribution throughout
Brazil. The exclusivity is subject to a minimum volume of 25 tons of additive to be purchased during 2004 (equivalent to approximately 850 tons of finished
products), rising to 100 tons (equivalent to 3400 tons of finished products) in
2005.
No minimum volumes are specified beyond 2005. The agreement consists of a
product purchase for Symphony's d2wTM additive and a royalty payment for the
finished products.
Commenting on the agreement, Eduardo Van Roost, Chief Executive of RES Brasil,
said:
'As pioneers in South America for degradable products, RES has begun to sign key contracts with high quality companies in a number of sectors. We are extremely pleased to be working with Symphony to create new degradable products in this important area of environmental awareness.'
Commenting on the agreement, Michael Laurier, Chief Executive of Symphony, said:
'This is Symphony's second significant licensing contract and introduces the
company to one of the largest markets in the world. We are delighted to be
working with RES, which has already promoted d2wTM technology successfully
during the past few months and major trials for a broad range of plastic
products are presently ongoing. Both RES and Symphony remain optimistic that
some major orders could result over the coming months.'

COMPANIES UK: Symphony's Brazil rubbish deal in the bag
By David Blackwell
Financial Times; Nov 08, 2003
Symphony Plastic Tech-nologies, producer of bio-degradable carrier bags for the Co-op and Somerfield, yesterday announced a deal that could sharply reduce the amount of plastic rubbish blowing around Brazil.
Michael Laurier, Symphony chief executive, said: "Our plastics break up in 90 days, when exposed to Brazil's climate, whereas in the UK it can take up to 12 months."
The latest deal is with RES, a Brazilian distributor specialising in biodegradable products. Symphony will supply RES with an unlimited amount of its d2w additive, which leads plastics exposed to heat and sunlight to break up into water and carbon dust.
The Brazilian deal follows agreements this year with distributors in South Africa and Canada. The news lifted the company's shares 4p to 28p yesterday.
All three deals have been agreed since the company, which moved from Ofex to Aim at the end of 2001, this summer ended its licensing agreement for additives with EPI, a small US technology company. The launch of d2w, its own product, let Symphony target export markets for the first time.
The cost of ending the EPI deal left Symphony 2.23m in the red in the first half to June. However, interim sales of 3.71m were equivalent to more than 90 per cent of sales in full-year 2002.
The company will work closely with manufacturers abroad in the use of the d2w additive. It aims to make a margin on the sale of the additive and then collect a royalty on the plastic bags produced. The deal with RES guarantees delivery of a minimum volume of 25 tonnes of additive this year, enough to make 850 tonnes of finished product. That would equate to 1m of revenue for RES, on which Symphony would collect a royalty. Mr Laurier said Symphony regarded the guaranteed sales as a minimum.

Local Authority Contract Win
Symphony Plastic Technologies Plc ("Symphony" or "the Group"), through its
wholly owned subsidiary Symphony Plastics Ltd, has for the first time been
awarded an important two year contract, with an option to extend to three years

the term of the contract.
The bags are being used for various applications including the collection of
household domestic waste, kerb side collection of dry recyclables and rubble
collection.
Michael Laurier, Chief Executive of Symphony said:
"The WPC contract for Symphony's range of non-degradable recycled and high
performance bags is further evidence of Symphonys' progress in delivering sales
to the local authority sector, and again demonstrates the diversity of products
and customers supplied by the Company."

Happy day:
Symphony Plastic Technologies, the degradable plastics company,
today reports that the formal handing down of the Judgment by the Court of
Appeal has taken place following the Appeal brought by EPI Environmental
Products Inc ('EPI') against the Judgment of the High Court of 21st December
2004 in favour of Symphony.
In addition to documenting the reasons for its decision (announced on 19th
December 2005) to dismiss the Appeal, the Court also considered the question of
costs. Symphony has been awarded its full costs for the Appeal which are to be
assessed against EPI on an indemnity basis. In addition, an interim award to
Symphony of 600,000 was ordered for immediate settlement from funds previously
lodged by EPI with the Court as security for Symphony's costs.
Michael Laurier, Chief Executive Officer of Symphony, said:
'The dismissal of all aspects of EPI's Appeal in December has now been clearly
reflected in the Court's decision on the award of costs to Symphony. Now that
the legal process on the central issues is largely completed we are very pleased
to be able to re-focus our attention on the opportunities facing us'.

The directors have shown their faith in the equity of the Co., and it would seem from the update that the distributors are doing well. The fundamentals are weak in that the financial position isn't clear, the chart needs to go a little further, to clear the long decline ( can the sp stay above the 200ma to create a golden X, or will it fade as in Jan) but the speculation on this little green share is very seductive, so much so that I'm in for the long haul, save any obvious warnings. GD I wouldn't want to predict a sp, I'm pretty much a novice but I like a small speculative punt. Now looking forward to a slow steady rise.

Queen1, I don't think that any Interest rates will be lowered for a while as there is still inflationary pressure in the US and with Bernanke still fairly new to the post I believe their could be further market dips. The high R.O.I in the US also seems to have had a draining effect on Investment in emerging markets which will hamper their demand for goods, which is currently drving some of our growth.
The political turmoil involved in Iran and Nigeria could push oil prices higher if they decide to cut America off, and then no doubt America will Charge in Tomahawks at the ready and add another country to the Invsasion list, creating world unrest which will no doubt damage the financial markets.
I also see Commodity prices as ripe for a further fall and don't believe in the 25 year super cycle, therefore it is my anticipation that their may soon be a bear run.
However I still have not withdrawn any Investment in the market s and hope that I am wrong, GDP.

Thanks for that GDP. It's hard to argue with some of the logic in there. In terms of another conflict there would obviously be a dip but every recent conflict has seen a sharp rise follow any initial dip. And Markets tend to have a way of compensating for the loss of momentum in one area with a surge in another. Not sure where that may come from if commodities head south but "Green" shares seem a decent bet. Which brings us back nicely to SYM :-)
G D Potts
- 02 Jun 2006 17:05

Ha yes, I do believe that SYM are well positioned to benefit from the 'Green' Phase, and the fundamentals are actually there to support a much higher price. I have for around two years now been investing primarily in Renewables, I held Ceres power at 99p and ITM at 130p, however I sold out at 180p and 210p respectively as I beleived their potential was then fully justified.
If you are looking for some other green plays that have great potential, I hold shares in each one, then have a look at Voller Energy Group - VLR, Renewable Energy Holdings - REH, and as a high risk play either Alkane Energy or Stanelco - ALK / SEO.

nice posts, it would be even better if we had more interest. hope the present slight dip is temporary. agree that the price of oil which looks to remain high, as I think will gold though not commodities in general, will have less of an impact now that SYM's main revenue is derived from the distribution of d2w. we need news flow to maintain the sentiment.

Is that a crystal ball I see in your hand GDP?
Symphony Plastic Technologies, the degradable plastics company, said sales are growing as household-name brands in various countries are increasingly using its products for environmentally friendly packaging.
The firm has shifted its strategy to focus on selling its d2w(R) additive, which assists degrading, rather than finished plastic products, and is also strengthening its international distribution.
Well-known brands using Symphony products include UK publisher IPC Media, Brazilian drinks group Schincariol, and hotel groups Marriott and Royal Caribbean International, the company noted.
Michael Laurier, CEO, underlined the 'increasing motivation of suppliers and manufacturers to take active steps towards adopting more environmentally friendly plastics.'

LONDON (AFX) - Degradable plastics company Symphony Plastic Technologies PLC said its change in strategy whereby it no longer competes with finished product suppliers but can work in harmony with them will have a positive impact on its second half results and beyond.
In an AGM statement chairman Nirj Deva said the company had started to turn the corner following its successful defence of the legal challenge to its core business and technology last year by Environmental Products Inc.
He said that with many of the major distractions and problems of the past few years over the company is in a position to develop all areas of the business, such as corporate governance, unhindered and looked forward to 'exciting times' in 2006 and 07.
Deva said: '2005 was a challenging year but also a year of evolution in which a new and more exciting strategy was implemented. We are becoming a more flexible business, operating on lower cost and higher operating margins.'

Degradable Polymer Products Inc. has been working with Rand and its counterparts

Other than in respect of the first 1,000,000 shares under option, the options
granted by the agreement are subject to Symphony shareholders' approval at an
extraordinary general meeting as well as being conditional upon Rand meeting

degradable technology.'

initial thoughts are still of huge potential, however the report is so full of promises and there's no meat, no proof yet that anything is achievable- the promises extend to the speculation that the new caribbean distribution agreement will attract more sales than that promised on 22 May of $4m.
Further the report on UK sales suggests that commercially sensitive information prevents detail!- is this a hint of imminent contracts?
France promises more next year.
Full of promise- will it deliver?
I am also sceptical of the rationale behind expansion into the thermal plastic waste recycling- does it inferr that the core d2w business model is dubious, or that management is full of confidence?
I am out unless promises show signs of fulfillment, at which time the sp will be above 14p I exect, tho' might also be tempted if it drops back to 8p

Symphony Plastic Technologies Plc ('Symphony' or the 'Group'), the degradable
plastics and waste-to-energy company, is pleased to announce that following the
recent interim results reported on Monday 25 September the Group is strongly
anticipating a move into profitability from quarter four of this year. This
confidence is driven by a sharp increase in received orders for the latter part
of the year.
The Group would also like to announce final settlement on the repayment of costs
in relation to the court case with EPI. The final cost agreed to be repaid to
Symphony is to be in excess of 300,000. This is in addition to the 600,000
already received earlier this year. All matters surrounding the litigation have
now been concluded.
The Group has also placed 6,300,000 ordinary 1 penny shares ('new ordinary
shares') at a price of 10 pence each in order to strengthen the balance sheet,
improve cash flow and start the initial investment phase on the waste-to-energy
project. Matthew Turner, managing director, has purchased 250,000 new ordinary
shares as part of the placing.
Following the placing, the directors have the following interest in the share
capital of the Company:
Michael Laurier 13.74%
Matthew Turner 0.36%
Ian Bristow 1.15%
Nirj Deva 0.03%
Application has been made for the new ordinary shares, which will rank pari
passu with the existing shares in issue, to be admitted to trading on AIM, and
admission is expected to become effective on 19 October 2006.
Michael Laurier, Chief Executive, said:
'The business is moving forward progressively and the increase in forward orders
resulting in the Group anticipating profitability in the near future is
encouraging.
We are also delighted to announce the conclusion of the litigation with EPI
allowing the business to move into 2007 free from the legal constraints that
have hindered the Group for so long.
We look forward to the future with confidence'

GDP, I'm amazed at the mentality of some. In love with the stock, unable to sort out the hype from the fundamentals.
Still, fortune favours those who do their homework and get in ahead of the pack.
On which note, here's the shareholder breakdown for SYM:

Biodegradable plastics a solution to overflowing landfills
Web Posted - Thu Nov 23 2006
A NEW range of biodegradable plastic products is being described as the solution to the problem of overflowing landfills across the world.
Chief Executive Officer of Symphony Environmental, Michael Laurier, said that for small developing island states, the problem of disposing of plastics was serious, but his products could offer a solution.
The solution is not to ban plastics, the solution is not to incinerate plastics, because it creates poisonous gases and the process is rather expensive. The solution to this problem is to make plastic vanish.
The range of products was introduced to officials attending the ACP/EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly during a ceremony hosted by Symphony Environmental and Brydens Limited on Tuesday evening at the Barbados Hilton.
The new technology that makes it possible for plastic to vanish is called OXO-degradation. Oxo-biodegradable plastics can be programmed at the time of manufacture to degrade in as little as few months or as much as a few years. This is possible due to the addition of a small amount of a pro-degradant additive in the manufacturing process, which changes the behaviour of plastics, Laurier said.
The plastic degrades to become carbon dioxide, water, and humus, and does not leave fragments of petro-polymers in the soil. It is also safe for long-term contact with any food type at temperatures up to 40 degrees Celsius, and is ideal for frozen food packaging. Most flexible and semi-rigid products can be made from oxo-biodegradable plastics, including shopping and garbage bags, films for packaging, bottles, among others.
Director of the Environmental Protection Department, Jeffrey Headley, said that plastics were one of the waste streams of concern in Barbados because of the length of time they take to degrade and their wide use. However, he said, that the introduction of a wide range biodegradable plastics would provide a solution to this problem and have a positive effect of conserving land space, and on Barbados environment. Headley said that the Ministry of Environment looked forward to working with any organisation offering products to help Barbados fragile environment.
Group Chairman of ANSA MCAL (Barbados) Limited, of which Brydens Limited is a subsidiary, John Bellamy, noted the frightening impact of humans on the environment, but said the excellent and affordable bio-degradable plastics could help reduce this stress if the products and principle behind them become widely accepted.

Symphony Plastics making the most of waste opportunity
Shareholders in Symphony Plastics (SYM:AIM)
have had to be patient since the firm was
floated in 2001 but it looks like they are about
to be rewarded.
Shares met chief executive Michael Laurier as
he was recovering from a visit to Hong Kong
and preparing for a trip to the West Indies. This
underlines the international appeal of the
groups d2w(R) technology, which allows
plastic to degrade and leave mainly water.
Although Symphony initially concentrated
on manufacturing biodegradable plastic bags,
it quickly realised that this was not the
most sensible way to utilise its technology.
However, there was a long hiatus until it had
defeated a legal challenge from EPI, a US
competitor. Now the group is now expanding
internationally.
Although Symphony is talking to a large
number of suppliers to UK supermarkets as
these behemoths seek to burnish their green
credentials, the greatest potential, at least in
the short term, is overseas. Its success in Brazil
with Schincariol, the second largest soft drinks
company there, has led to interest from rivals.
It is also talking with a large number of
Brazilian companies about the possible use of
its technology.
Symphony received orders worth $4 million
in the Caribbean this year and believes there is
scope for substantial growth there. In South
Africa, Astra Pack, the second largest packaging
group, is a significant customer. Hong
Kong and the UAE are other areas of potential
growth.
The company has already indicated that
it is moving into profit. That could be
accelerated if its new waste-to-energy
business starts to win orders. We believe that
there should be announcements in the next
3-4 months.

Bioplastics Show Signs of a Boom in 2006
Fonte: European Bioplastics
(29 de Novembro 2006)
BRUSSELS -- The bioplastics industry in Europe has experienced its first boom in market development during the year 2006. This result emerged from a recent survey conducted by the industry association European Bioplastics amongst its 66 members. The intention was to gather information on the state of the art in the bioplastics industry and the market development in Europe. The questions covered issues such as production, new products, converters, development of sales, and market highlights of the year 2006, as well as expectations for 2007. Growth in part of up to 100% on the previous year is anticipated by manufacturers, particularly in biopackaging. Numerous chains of stores throughout Europe are introducing biopackaging in response to the growing number of consumers who are concerned with depletion of fossil resources and climate change. According to the Association survey, companies in this sector expect continued strong positive growth in 2007.
In a preliminary review of the year 2006 the bioplastics industry reported a strong increase in demand. Us Users interest has grown across all product sectors. In bioplastics film packaging the very beginning of a boom is evidenced by the strong growth. Businesses attribute this largely to three aspects: raised consumer environmental awareness, companies being increasingly prepared to actively support sustainable development, and the sharp rise in raw material and energy prices. "Bioplastics are regarded as an innovative solution" concludes Harald Kaeb, Association Chairman. Similarly to organic food and bioenergy, the emergence of bioplastics is a result of changing attitudes in business and society.
Both the use of renewable resources as well as the biodegradability and compostability of many bioplastics products have become convincing sales and benefits arguments. Technical development of the special materials characteristics of bioplastics has progressed to the point where bioplastics are increasingly gaining a competitive edge. Material properties such as the excellent printability with no need for pre-treatment and the glossiness and barrier against gas, oils and fats, can be advantageous in specific applications, e.g. for fresh produce packaging. Products such as carrier bags which can subsequently be used in the home as biowaste bags, or catering articles and mulch films provide the benefit of a biological waste management option after use.
The positive trend is most evident in Great Britain, Europes pioneering country for biopackaging. In September a leading supermarket chain announced that it would change over 500 product lines to biopackaging. The objective is to save 4,000 tons of fossil-based plastics annually. Other British retailers also plan to increasingly adopt bioplastics. Biopackaging can now be found on supermarket shelves right across Europe.
European Bioplastics has published information based on its members survey which outlines product development innovations and growth in production capacity. The number of products, producers and industrial users has increased in equal measure. As such, bioplastics are well on the way to achieving the leap from niche market presence to a broader introduction in the medium term.
Bioplastics market share of total plastics consumption in Europe currently accounts for less than one percent. Following extended development and trial phases, bioplastics products now have become fit for market in specific application sectors. This is a pre-condition for dynamic growth. Encouraged by rapidly growing demand, manufacturers have continued to expand production capacities. However to exploit the application potential that has become evident, further significant investments will be required in the future.
Given the high cost and a lead time of at least two years until a new manufacturing plant comes on stream, investors need to be wary of making decisions based on short- term criteria. The question arises as to whether measures should be created to support the market introduction of innovative development. It would also further strengthen the international competitiveness of Europe in important innovation areas such as bioplastics technology.
The results of the Associations survey indicate that companies from this sector anticipate continued strong positive growth in 2007.
European Bioplastics is the representation of the bioplastics industry in Europe. The association comprises companies from the agricultural feedstock, chemical and plastics industry, together with industrial users and recycling companies.

interesting to read all your posts.
Still eagerly watching and waiting for the speculation to turn into proof.
The annual bioplastics show article promotes the idea of a growth industry and seemed widely supported w lots of leading edge companies exhibiting, however i couldn't find sym registered on their website. Apart from the lack of newsflow, my main concern has been that oxo-degradables are not classified as compostible by the european standards, which may be why the current lack of widespread use. The organic alternatives would appear to carry an edge here, however the market ( both retail and stock) hasn't shown a clear favourite. Certainly it would be nice to have some evidence of more UK users than the co-op.
I really like sym because of the fact that they have a very low market cap, have a proven product with a clear distribution plan and are promising profits soon. I'm no expert w charting however it appears to have broken the long term downtrend. Contract news soon please.

Apologies if I've missed something but I think the issue here is what sym produces and what bioplastics are as opposed to fossil based plastics( ie oil).
Is it not the case that sym prooduce an additive to help fossil based plastics breakdown rather than bioplastics which are made of corn starch(?) etc and are naturally biodegradeable. Could this be why sym is not registered on said website? if I am not mistaken this may be good news for the environment but bad news for SYM.
Please let me know I am mistaken but all plastics are not the same. and by extension all biodegradable plastic is not the same or part of syms market.

Spot on, GN.
Symphony & it's subsidiaries make non-degradable, degradable & pro-degradent (d2W additive) products, but not bio-degradable.
IMO, Symphony will, at some time in the future, need to consider the bio-degradable market as the oil based alternatives will become politically and socially out of favour.

Symphony said it has concluded its review of the CARICOM business (Caribbean Community and Common Market) and is making a final provision of 500,000 stg against the bad debt of a former distributor.
Chief executive Michael Laurier said restructuring of the CARICOM region had impacted the balance sheet but that it was 'positive in terms of maximising profitability and cash flow going forward.'

Symphony Plastic - Trading Statement

Symphony Plastic Technologies PLC

Symphony Plastic Technologies plc
Trading Update and Convertible Redeemable Loan Facility
Symphony Plastic Technologies Plc ('Symphony' or the 'Group'), the degradable
plastics and waste-to-energy company, is pleased to announce that, following the
recent Trading Update on 13 October, trading is in line with management
expectations of moving into profitability from quarter four of this year. Sales
and gross profit margins continue to increase.
As reported in September's Interim Results, this margin improvement follows the
change in strategic direction of the Group and the re-focus from a high volume
low-margin commodity business to a much leaner higher-margin environmental
technology business. This transition has allowed the Group to expand into new
markets and products and to take advantage of the significant opportunities
provided.
The Board have concluded its review of the CARICOM business (Caribbean Community
and Common Market) and is making a final provision of 500,000 against the bad
debt of a former distributor. It is anticipated to recover this investment
through new licence fee income over the next three years and materially enhanced
sales in the region.
As part of this on-going strategic review Symphony has recently reviewed its
North American investment in Degradable Polymer Products Inc. It is the Group's
view that the medium term value of this investment, based on current events,
could be materially higher than the PUT Option price contained within the
Distribution Agreement. As a result, the Group will no longer be exercising the
PUT Option which had expected to be completed before the end of December 2006.
Any impact that this would have had on the business will be covered by a new
500,000 convertible redeemable loan facility with the Headstart Funds leaving
the business in a cash neutral position. It is anticipated that the Group will
not require the full facility which will be used to bridge the short-fall in
cash-flow due to the Board's decision not to exercise the PUT Option but wait
for higher returns in the future.
This will be available for conversion into 1p ordinary shares after 120 days
unless redeemed. Conversion into 1p ordinary shares is calculated at 95% of the
lowest bid price during the 15 trading days prior to the conversion date. In
addition 500,000 warrants have been issued at a subscription price of 15p per 1p
ordinary share, 200,000 of which may be deferred up to one year. Interest on the
loan is 8% per annum. The cost of redemption if made will be either 110% of the
loan if repaid within 180 days, or 105% after 180 days.
Michael Laurier, Chief Executive of Symphony, said:
'The recent strategic review and the subsequent evolution of the business has
been an extremely beneficial exercise for us both in terms of improving our
revenues and enhancing our margins
Symphony continues to develop the many opportuntities available in a wide range
of applications and markets.
The restructuring of the CARICOM region has impacted the balance sheet but is
positive in terms of maximising profitability and cash flow going forward. We
are now in full control of the development in the region.
We continue to work towards the profitability of the business and look forward
to the future with confidence.'

A revenue warning from Symphony Plastic Technologies (SYM) left its shares trading 2.75p lower at 8p. The company said that it expected first-quarter sales to come in below expectations following a slide in orders in certain overseas markets. The biodegradable plastics specialist said that despite an encouraging final quarter last year, the anticipated move into profitability had been delayed. Symphony said it had been forced to take a more cautious view on the timing of the recovery from last year's strategic direction change.

BUSINESS UPDATE AND BOARD CHANGE
GRANT AWARD
BUSINESS UPDATE
Symphony Environmental Technologies Plc ('The Company,') the degradable plastic
and waste-to-energy Group is pleased to announce that since the last business
update on 22 February 2007 significant progress has been made in a number of key
business areas. In Portugal the country's largest retail group, Sonae, has
adopted d2wTM in all their carrier bags for their Continente, Mondelo and
Mondelo Bonjour supermarket chains, which are estimated to account for more than
500 million bags per year. This is significant not in terms of absolute value,
but for the breakthrough which it represents. This builds on the current
portfolio which includes Marriott, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, Tesco and the
Co-op who all presently use d2wTM finished products or our additive technology.
On 22 February 2007, the Company also announced delays in orders in a number of
key overseas markets. Following high level discussions with major clients in
these territories these problems have now been addressed and corrective action
taken to bring sales levels into line with management expectations. Further
updates will be made when the Company's Preliminary Results are announced before
the end of May.
The Company also announces that Matthew Turner, Group Managing Director, left
the Company on Friday 27th April following a review by the Company. There are no
plans to appoint another Group MD.
A strategic review of the organisation of the business is nearing completion.
There are now three operating subsidiaries (see notes to editors), and in future
the Plc itself will be organised into separate operating departments each headed
by a specialist reporting to the Chief Executive and thence to the Board. It is
anticipated that this will improve the efficiency and management control of the
Company and will focus specialist expertise where it is needed.
50,000 GRANT FROM UK GOVERNMENT
Symphony Energy Resources Ltd. ('SER'), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Symphony
Environmental Technologies Plc, was created to focus on converting
waste-to-energy by innovative processes. It is currently working with two
waste-to-energy reprocessing technologies, Thermal and Microwave Pyrolysis. The
Company, is pleased to announce that SER has accepted an award from the UK
Secretary of State for Trade and Industry of a grant of 50,000 for a
feasibility study into microwave pyrolysis of scrap tyres.
SER will be undertaking this study, in association with Imperial College,
London, to gain a greater understanding of microwave activity in this
application, and of the thermodynamics of microwave degradation of tyres.
The outputs of microwave pyrolysis are a Tyre Derived Oil (TDO) and carbon
black. Microwave energy is more efficient than heat in terms of
processing-power consumed and is expected to give off lower direct and indirect
emissions per ton processed. The output products are expected to be cleaner and
therefore of higher value than their thermal equivalent. The study is due to
start shortly and is expected to run for a period of 20 weeks.
These technologies address two of the world's most significant environmental
concerns, - the disposal of waste, and the reduction of dependence on imported
oil. The Company will announce the findings of this study in due course.

Exciting times ahead.
A large number of Multinationals have shown faith in Symphony D2w products and the problems expressed in its last trading statement have been addressed.
A grant has been made to one of SYM's subsidiary's to carry out some exciting and potentially lucrative research.
Preliminary's due end of May which should be very interesting, I have no doubt these will reflect well on SYM's performance and make a note that they will be moving into profit.
Will raise my holding when trading opens tomorrow morning. Shares could easily double back to 14p in 07.

Business Update
Product Clarification
Symphony Environmental Technologies Plc ('Symphony' or 'the Company'), the
degradable plastics and waste-to-energy Group, is pleased to announce the
following:
BUSINESS UPDATE
The Group continues to make progress notwithstanding the delays affecting
performance which have already been announced. In the oxo-biodegradable
plastics Division the transition from low-margin finished product to
higher-margin additive is taking effect. In the waste-to energy Division we are
pleased to announce progress with Thermal Pyrolysis (see below) in addition to
the progress with Microwave Pyrolysis announced on 30th April.
Oxo-biodegradable Plastic (d2w)
The changes referred to in the Company's Business Update announcement on 30
April 2007 have started to have a positive effect on the business. Sales of
higher-margin products are growing and operating costs are falling.
The Company's announcements of 22 February and 30 April 2007 referred to delays
in a number of overseas markets, and that corrective action had been taken. Two
market areas were involved, and in the first we are pleased to say the issues
have been resolved. Most of the local stock has been sold and paid for, and new
orders have been confirmed for delivery. In the second market area, local stocks
are being sold, the process of reconfirming orders and stock repositioning is
ongoing, and further updates will be given at the Preliminary Results stage,
which will now be in June, rather than at the end of May.
Waste to Energy (Thermal Pyrolysis)
Symphony is also pleased to announce that Cabinet approval has been given in Sri
Lanka for an MOU between Symphony Energy Resources Ltd. (SER) and the Ceylon
Petroleum Corporation (CPC) of Sri Lanka, supported by The Ministry of Petroleum
of Sri Lanka.
The project is to build a Thermal Pyrolysis plant in Sri Lanka in 2008 and has
been agreed as a result of meetings between SER and a team of experts from CPC.
It must be stressed that no contract has yet been signed, but the MOU represents
a major step forward for Symphony.
CPC is the state owned Oil Company of Sri Lanka and is the sole importer and
refiner of oil products into Sri Lanka. Current operations include a refinery
in Colombo, over 800 filling stations throughout the island, supplies to the
marine bunkering companies, aviation fuel to the international airport, and
supplies of oil products to the independent oil companies.
Thermal Pyrolysis is a process that applies heat to plastics in the absence of
oxygen to break the chemical bonds. The system converts waste plastics into
Marine Diesel Oil (MDO), and is designed to recycle mixed plastic waste streams
into valuable and easily marketable products. The process provides an
alternative to conventional and more costly recycling systems and can use most
types of plastic waste that currently go to landfill. The system itself uses
very little energy and is self-sustaining with virtually zero waste from the
process. If the plant is constructed, in due course MDO output per unit is
expected to be in the region of 18,000 tonnes per annum or the equivalent of
150,000 barrels of oil.
This technology addresses two of the most pressing environmental questions faced
by governments worldwide - What to do with waste plastics, and how to reduce
dependence on imported oil.
PRODUCT CLARIFICATION (oxo-biodegradable plastic)
Plastics, recycling, compostability and renewable issues are now constantly in
the media and much confusion exists over this subject. Symphony's d2w(R)
oxo-biodegradable technology produces plastic which degrades by a process of
OXO-degradation, initiated by an additive. The process involves little or no
additional cost, as products can be made with the same machinery and workforce
as conventional plastic products. During their useful life they are just as
thin, strong, and durable as ordinary plastic.
It is important to note that the plastic does not just fragment. It is consumed
by bacteria after the additive has reduced the molecular weight, and it is
therefore 'biodegradable.' This process continues until the material has
biodegraded to nothing more than CO2, water, and humus, and it does not leave
fragments of petro-polymers in the soil.
Eco-toxicity tests demonstrate that oxo-biodegradable plastic produces no
immediate, or cumulative, adverse effects on the soil, whether from the material
itself or from pro-degradants, plasticisers, surfactants, pigments, metal salts
or lubricants. D2w(R) does not contain 'heavy metals.'
The UK Food Standards Agency's Expert Group on Vitamins and Minerals has carried
out a risk assessment on trace elements and has shown that most of the metal
salts used in oxo-biodegradable plastics are trace-elements necessary for
healthy plant and human growth.
Unlike PVC, the polymers from which oxo-biodegradable plastics are made do not
contain organo-chlorine. Nor do they contain PCBs, nor do they emit methane or
nitrous oxide, even under anaerobic conditions.
The time taken for d2w(R) products to degrade can be 'programmed' at the time of
manufacture and can be a few months or a few years. Exposure to sunlight
accelerates degradation, but the process of oxo-bio-degradation, once initiated,
continues even in the absence of light, so long as air is present. Products can
be vacuum-packed for delivery and will not degrade in the absence of air until
needed for use.
On 24th May this year the Periodical Publishers Association of the UK
recommended to all its members that oxo-biodegradable film be used for wrapping
their magazines for distribution. D2w(R) is already in use for this purpose.
Oxo-biodegradable plastics are currently made from a by-product of oil refining,
and oil is of course a finite resource, but this by-product arises because the
world needs fuels for engines, and would arise whether or not the by-product
were used to make plastic goods.
Unless the oil is left under the ground, carbon dioxide will inevitably be
released, but until other fuels and lubricants have been developed for engines,
it makes good environmental sense to use the by-product, instead of wasting it
by 'flare-off' at the refinery and using scarce agricultural resources to make
plastics.
D2w(R) has been certified safe for long-term contact with any food type at
temperatures up to 40degreesC, and oxo-biodegradable products are being supplied
by the UK's leading supermarkets, Tesco and the Co-op. NB: In view of the
major custom of Walmart, is there any prospect of tying up ASDA at some point?
In Portugal the country's largest retail group, Sonae, has adopted d2w(R)
plastic carrier bags, and other major users include Marriott, Royal Caribbean
Cruise Lines, BUPA, News International, Pizza Hut, KFC, and Walmart.
Oxo-biodegradable plastic is ideal for frozen food packaging, as it can be kept
for extended periods at low temperature, and will quickly degrade when it
becomes a waste product at normal temperatures.
In Brazil more than 20 cities have issued a direction that the city authorities
and all their suppliers use only oxo-biodegradable plastic for their packaging,
bags, and refuse sacks.
If people want to incinerate oxo-biodegradable plastic with heat recovery, or
recycle them, or re-use them, then that can be done. The key point is what
happens to the plastic which is not collected, and gets into the environment as
litter. Conventional plastic will lie around in the environment for many
decades, but d2w(R) will degrade in a short time leaving no harmful residues.
Biodegradable plastics have been supplied in UK supermarkets for more than three
years but there is no evidence that they have caused any increase in litter.
Oxo-biodegradable plastic also has useful applications in agriculture. For many
years farmers and growers have used plastic sheets to protect their crops but
after the crop has been harvested many thousands of square kilometres of dirty
plastic have to be removed and disposed of. This is a very expensive process,
and creates huge quantities of contaminated waste.
Oxo-biodegradable plastic sheets can however be programmed at manufacture to
degrade soon after the harvest. The fragments can then be ploughed into the soil
where they complete the biodegradation process and become a source of carbon for
next year's plants. Symphony has trials ongoing with a new additive specially
formulated for this purpose.

All the best for the New Year!
From the desk of CEO - Michael Laurier
We are approaching the end of another year; the period when everyone is celebrating
with families and friends the end of a cycle, and making plans for the forthcoming
year. This is when we reflect on the past and make preparations for the future.
We, at Symphony, are doing the same. We finish this
year pleased with our accomplishments and those of
our Distributors around the world, and with the knowledge
that we have dealt with everything to the very best
of our ability. 2008 will be celebrated among Symphony
Directors and staff as a success, and we will endeavour
to ensure that the New Year will be even better.
The year 2008 also gave us reason for reflection as the
economy worldwide is deteriorating and for many companies
and people 2009 will be a very testing time. On
the other hand we are very appreciative to be able to look back and see how this remarkable
company is growing from strength to strength even during this difficult period.
We close 2008 having achieved a lot despite the recession on the world. We would
not have been able to achieve such a success without everyone's contribution working
for the amazing d2w brand; the brand that has now been commercialized in more than
60 countries, the brand that has increased the number of eco-compatible plastics
around the world, and the brand that is contributing to a better environment for us all.
These are the achievements mentioned by our Chairman Nirj Deva M.E.P. during his
speech at Symphony's Christmas lunch, and which have created an atmosphere of
pride, satisfaction, and thanks for another year of hard work well done, and the hope
for even greater success next year. This atmosphere is what I want to share with you.
Thank you for being a part of this story, and for being part of d2w. Celebrate the end
of this year and be prepared for the next one full of good news!

Legislation
There are two separate UK Laws affecting this area: 1) The Packaging Waste Regulations which sets out the requirements for dealing with packaging waste and 2) The Packaging (Essential Requirements) Act which defines the requirements that all packaging must satisfy.
The Packaging Waste Regulations were incorporated into UK law in 1997. They are based on the European Directive for Packaging Waste. Currently 65% of all packaging must be recovered. It is not practical for individual companies to organise the recovery, and recycling, of their packaging waste. So to ensure that the UK conforms to the EU Directive a series of non-profit organisations were created to administer the 'PRN' scheme. PRNs (Packaging Return Notes) are issued (sold) to companies to enable them to fulfil their individual obligations under the directive. The revenue from the PRNs is used by the organisation issuing them (e.g. Valpak) to fund recovery and recycling schemes. Thus the UK is able to demonstrate that as a whole we are complying with the Directive.
A PRN at no cost - i.e. one where the material is exempt from any charge - can only be issued to companies if the material concerned falls within the definitions of recovery or recycling. Biodegradability is not recognised in the UK legislation as a definition of recoverability but Compostability is recognised as a basis for exemption.
Unusually the UK splits the execution of the Directive into two. It created the Packaging Waste Regulations, and then followed up with the Packaging (Regulations Essential Requirements). Other EU governments carried both sections together as one piece of law. Whilst biodegradability is not recognised in the Waste Regulations (see above) in the Essential Requirements, biodegradability and compostability are recognised and d2w meets those requirements.
The result of this is that in the UK d2w products can be sold as meeting the Essential Requirements but there is no exemption from the PRN charges for the time being i.e. until oxo-biodegradable plastics meet the relevant standard. In the EU, however, d2w products do not at present meet their equivalent of the Essential Requirements because they do not satisfy the Sturm Test which is the key part of the current EU standard and therefore are not formally acceptable for packaging (but see below). There are some exceptions e.g. in Italy where, in strictly legal terms, carrier bags are not 'packaging'.

The approximate number of plastic bags consumed this year:
274,854,677,528 at 16.30 today. share price 8p Plastic is strong, durable, versatile, lightweight, safe and inexpensive. It is made from a by-product of oil refining which would otherwise be wasted, so nobody is importing oil to make plastic products.
However, the problem identified by governments and NGOs around the world is that plastic does last rather too long if it gets into the environment and especially in the oceans.
Symphony has found the answer to this problem. Our d2w additive put into the plastic at the extrusion stage will make the finished product "oxo-biodegradable" so that it will degrade and disappear in a short timescale, leaving no fragments, no methane and no harmful residues.
Degradability is not a disposal option - you can still re-use and recycle - it is low cost insurance against the accumulation of plastic waste in the environment.
There is little or no on-cost, because d2w environmentally-responsible plastic products are made with the same machinery and workforce as ordinary plastic and there is no need to change suppliers.
d2w and the droplet logo are trademarks of a range of totally degradable flexible and semi-rigid plastic products and pro-degradant additives which are sold worldwide.

Another product added!
25/08/2009 13:39:12
By Fernando Souza Filho
A British company has just launched a very interesting product. This is the plastic anti-microbial and anti-bacterial D2P, made with nanotechnology the silver ions to preserve food and all products must be preserved against the action of microbes.
The D2P is composed of chemical elements, added to common plastic, form a protective layer, preserving food longer and preventing the proliferation of bacteria and fungi, even in medical equipment. It represents only 2% of all compounds used in plastic production.
D2P technology combines the features of the oxy-biodegradable product with the benefits of antimicrobials and fungicides. The additive with silver ions was approved by U.S. institutions such as the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) for use in various sectors, including contact with food.
The application of D2P in plastics was possible after the completion of numerous studies. The additive was tested in more than 50 micro-organisms, including MRSA (a type of resistant bacteria), Salmonella, Listeria and Pseudomonas, with more than two thousand applications. The plastics technology D2P are oxo-biodegradable, allowing its degradation in a very short time compared to ordinary plastic, and then also be consumed by micro-organisms.
The owner of the technology is the British company Symphony, known for developing other procedures to transform the conventional plastic biodegradable and oxo-biodegradable (which uses technology d2w).
The oxo-biodegradable technology developed by Symphony is sold in over 70 countries, including Brazil, serving more than 220 licensed plastic industries. In Brazil, the exclusive representative of the British company is the Res Brazil, headquartered in Valinhos, in S Paulo.

A nice rise today on the back of this announcement:
Symphony Environmental Technologies Plc announces that it has signed a supply agreement, together with its French distributor, Alternative Plastics Sarl ("APS"), with the Danish producer of high quality packaging products, Superfos Industries a/s ("Superfos").
The agreement, for a minimum period of 5 years, provides Superfos EU, a subsidiary of Superfos, with European Union exclusivity for the manufacture of a range of top-filled injection moulded rigid plastic packaging using special grade d2w additives, supplied by Symphony through APS, and the use of the d2w trademark on all such packaging. The product range will include food packaging items such as salad tubs and non food items such as paint pots. These items, which are generally supplied by Superfos to food and non food processors, are sold by retailers throughout the EU.
Michael Laurier, CEO of Symphony Environmental Technologies plc, said: "We are very pleased to be associated with Superfos on its initiatives to improve and launch its top-filled injection moulded rigid packaging products with d2w controlled life oxo-biodegradable technology. We are excited to be part of this important development whereby Superfos will be the first major European producer to launch and develop a range of products made with d2w. This is also a major step forward for Symphony and the rigid plastics industry and shows the world, by example, that there are solutions available to improve the environmental aspect of rigid plastic packaging. We are delighted that Superfos has embraced our d2w technology and look forward to working together with Superfos in the years ahead."
Hans Pettersson, CEO of Superfos, said: "In our pursuit of excellence and innovation we continually seek to be market leaders and improve all aspects of our products, people and services and this agreement to launch d2w in our products forms part of that commitment. We have therefore selected Symphony as our partner in this initiative for the supply of their d2w controlled-life oxo-biodegradable additive technology for our top-filled injection moulded rigid plastic packaging. We very much look forward to working with the Symphony team in the continued development of this process so as to maximise the benefit to most if not all our packaging for our environmentally responsible customers."

Biodegradable plastics group Symphony Environmental Technologies said it had signed a collaboration agreement and commitment to a strategic investment with France's Eranova.
Eranova had developed a unique technology and process, which extracts starch from algae for use with other materials, the company said.
It would initially pay €500,122 for an 8% shareholding in Eranova, with an option to increase its shareholding to 51%, exercisable in one or more tranches within three years after the initial investment.
Symphony Environmental said Eranova's starch could be used to produce compounded resins which are compostable and biodegradable.
In addition, the technology could be developed to produce biofuel, biopolymers, proteins for food and animal feed stock, as well as by-products for the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries, the company said.

Symphony Environmental Technologies has launched the first latex antimicrobial examination glove made with d2p technology.
Symphony is working with Health & Hygiene and Biomax Rubber Industries of Malaysia. The collaboration agreement was signed on 2 February 2018.
Biomax Rubber Industries is one of the fastest growing manufacturers of latex examination gloves in Malaysia and produces more than 1 billion gloves per year, which are sold in more than 40 countries worldwide.
Health & Hygiene is incorporated in the UK and has been working with Symphony for some time on several projects.
The antimicrobial examination gloves will be sold under the newly registered Protector Health & Hygiene brand.
The gloves are the first product launched in what is planned to be a full range of antimicrobial disposable healthcare products including face masks, caps, shoe covers, surgeon gowns, lab coats, isolation gowns, bed and pillow covers and hospital waste bags containing d2p technology.
d2p antimicrobial technology provides complete protection throughout the life of the glove by disrupting and deactivating key molecules within the bacterial cell, preventing cell replication and infection.

It's my understanding that SYM produces additives for conventional plastic products which make them perform in a certain way. The additives and the mixing processes are protected by SYM Trade Marks and by intellectual property rights.

black bird, from the tone and content of your posts I'm assuming you're shorting SYM. Good luck to you and your bank balance with that.

IF SYM really has the World-answer to making plastic degradeable (whilst retaining its usefulness, after being moulded).... Surely, the World would like to know. However, this Co. has been struggling for years (to get their tech recognised where it matters), so I suspect it either has massive "usability" downsides - or incompetent Management, maybe both. Even if their additive is seriously expensive, once the original Patent expires -it will be near-worthless. Wake-up Management!
