I have been keeping half an eye on this company for some time and wonder whether this is the signal that reverses the downward trend. Certainly all the pieces seem to be falling into place. Can anyone enlighten me further as to the failings of the company or mangagment which have led to this declining pattern and if anything else has altered that will start a consistent upswing?
thanks in advance..

Added a few ~13.5p.
Chart picking up on hopes of +ve outcome to trial - could work up to 15p ahead of trial, and look at 20 or 25p if outcome favourable.
Its also just broken falling resistance from sep03.
And there's a longer-term falling resitance from Dec01 coming in around 20p now - so that would be a logical cap at the mo' as well.
Spread very narrow now - 13.25/13.5p...
It's still risky, but worth a punt, IMO.

Hi everyone. Anyone still interested in SYM? Ive been watching for a while and bought soume on thursday of last week.
The future looks good, Tesco, Somerfield and the co-op are customers and I am sure(IMHO) that more will follow. With the current green age that we live in and the amount of waste that we currently produce, the time has come for waste reduction and degradable products to take over. Now the court case is over, the sahre price will surely go in one direction. UP!! I may topup next week if the price drops. Its def one to watch.
Any comments anyone?

Hi
I have been back watching this share recently but missed getting in before the recent rise....same old story..... todays news sent the shares back 10%, maybe this is short term. maybe a good time to come on board? potential as ever feels good. but is it still a 'dog' to quote the beginning of this thread, was the court case all that was holding it back?, does exposure to rising raw material prices demonstrate a lack of fore sight? At least the ability to renegotiate contracts seems present, lets hope to a better advantage.

Hi Global Nomad - Thanks for your post. For what it's worth (and trying not to ramp) I believe that longer term the sky could be the limit for SYM. From a "green" perspective this is the way that governments are going to have to go. Any company with a technology that is relatively easy to use and understand, but that could make a big difference from an environmental-impact perspective will be onto a winner. And I believe SYM is (IMHO etc).

Great new RNS notfication of major US/Canada distribution partnership with DPPI today.
DPPI pay $50k now and $550k later this year.
DPPI have a 1 year option to acquire 4 million SYM sahres at 30p - which undelines the price target for this share.
SYM will acquire 25% of DPPPI which must list on US/Can market within 2 years.
So SYM cover all US/Can with no capital/initial outlay on a marketing infra structure - sounds great to me.
Should put a spark in the SP - lots of buying this morning, shares up 1.75p.

Thanks, watcher. I agree. Heavy selling into a constant price or, as here, a price which is dropping enough just to scare some of us, seems to indicate MM's collecting stock for the next upward momentum.
Since I'm in for the next 10 years, in general, any serious scare tactic is just enother buying oppportunity for me - if only I had endless dosh. Currently fully invested across a quite exciting range of movers and shakers, so nothing spare (that isn't going on SEO, anyway!).

SYMPHONY PLASTIC TECHNOLOGIES PLC
APPEAL
Notification has been received by Symphony Plastic Technologies Plc ("Symphony"
or "the Group"), the degradable plastics company, that EPI Environmental
Products Inc (EPI) has been granted leave to appeal the judgement handed down in
favour of Symphony by the High Court in London on 21st December 2004.
Michael Laurier, Chief Executive Officer, said:
"The possibility of an appeal is a feature of any civil case and we are not
surprised by this development. The Directors are of the view, as they have been
from the start and as was demonstrated in the High Court, that the claims made
by EPI are without merit."
I'd forgotten about this little issue. Is the knee-jerk dip a buying opportunity or do we have a real concern the appeal will overturn the original judgement?

Under the terms of the deal, GBN will market Symphony's d2w degradable additive products exclusively in Saudi Arabia and will purchase atleast 2.43 mln usd of products from Symphony in the first year.
Thereafter, the volume of products purchased will increase by no less than 110 pct on the preceding year, Symphony said.
"Both GBN and Symphony are confident that the market for its product will rapidly develop in Saudi
Arabia as a result of increasing environmental pressures," said chief executive Michael Laurier."

Conditional 1.7 million Share Placing and
Notice of Extraordinary General Meeting
Symphony Plastic Technologies Plc ("Symphony" or "the Company"), the degradable
plastics company, announces that it is holding an Extraordinary General Meeting
"EGM" at 9:00 am on Thursday 31st March 2004, at Elstree House, Elstree Way,
Borehamwood, Hertfordshire WD6 1LE.
The purpose of the meeting is to approve a placing of 11,666,667 new ordinary
shares of 1p each, at a placing price of 15p each, in the capital of the Company
("New Ordinary Shares"), ranking pari passu in all respects with the existing
issued ordinary shares in the capital of the Company. Application will be made
for all such New Ordinary Shares, once issued and allotted, to be admitted to
trading on AIM.
Reasons for the Proposed Placement
The Board of Symphony believe that it is in the best interests of the Company
and its shareholders to replace funds that are currently tied up in court and to
finance the anticipated increase in levels of existing business as well as to
facilitate further expansion. The Proposed 1.7 million Placing will strengthen
Symphony's balance sheet and the Company will be well placed to meet the
expected high level of demand for d2w (R) totally degradable plastic products in
various markets and market sectors.

This was the announcement on 11th October 2004
FURTHER DEVELOPMENTS IN THE HIGH COURT
Symphony Plastic Technologies plc ("Symphony") today announces an update regarding the ongoing claim against Symphony by EPI Environmental Products Inc (EPI).
As announced on 14 July 2003 the license agreement with EPI was terminated. EPI issued proceedings against Symphony on 25 February 2004. EPI claim thatSymphonyhave breached a number of agreements concerning EPIs degradable additives, namely that they constitutea breach of contract, passing off and misuse of confidential information.
In relation to a claim by Symphony for security for costs, a High Court ruling on 8 October 2004 has now ordered EPI to make a further payment into Court of 170,000 by 18 October, making a total of 330,000 paid into the High Court by EPI as security against Symphonys anticipated legal costs. No payment by way of security has been awarded against Symphony.
An application by EPI to adjourn the trial date was rejected by the Court. The Court awarded a proportion of the costs for this Hearing to Symphony specifically to reflect their disapproval of aspects of EPIs presentation. The balance of the costs from the Hearing will be treated as costs in the case.
Michael Laurier, Chief Executive Officer, said:
The date of trial is scheduled for mid November and we remain wholly confident that we will prove in Court the absence of any substance to EPIs claims. Symphony fully expects to see this matter through to a successful conclusion."
And this was the announcement about the court case on 21st December 2004
Successful Court Judgement
Symphony Plastic Technologies plc (Symphony), the degradable plastics company, announces that the judgement in the case brought by EPI Environmental Products Inc (EPI) against Symphony has now been handed down by the High Court in London.
The most important claim by far, that Symphony copied EPIs technology, was dismissed entirely, together with all but two of the other claims which were made. This leaves Symphony free to continue to exploit its own technology worldwide.
Of a total of eleven claims brought, two lesser claims were upheld, one relating to the return of documents will result in only nominal damages of 2, and the other, principally relating to the use of stock, remains to be assessed by the Court. Symphony does not anticipate that this will result in a significant amount becoming payable.
EPI was ordered to pay 85% of Symphonys cost on the standard basis.
Michael Laurier, Chief Executive, said:
The very favourable conclusions of the Court mark a very welcome end to months of uncertainty. We are grateful for the loyalty and support of our many friends, customers and shareholders during this trying time. We are delighted with this outcome and look forward with renewed enthusiasm to taking our business forward in the light of this clear and positive verdict
I can only suppose that SYM have costs tied up in the court case which they cannot yet get reimbursed as to 85% by EPI until either they have deceided not to pursue an appeal, or their appeal has failed. This could be some months away.
It does seem pretty clear that the cc is a non-material issue other than temporary cashflow, subject to what any appeal might bring - what is the normal time-limt to lodge an appeal, anyone know?
I can only see today's dip as a golden opportunity for those who know this company to top up. If I were a rich man . . . da-dee, da-di, da-di, da-di, da-di, da-di, da-di, dee

I think it would have been nicer for SYM to have announced the new shares issue at the same time that they told us about the Saudi contract!!!
Despite the jolt in the sp it has held up reasonably well.Do you expect it to fall to 15p if the EGM approves the issue?
I bought on Monday(of course)expecting a nice rise for the week.I don't want to hang around for months while the sp moulders.
With this Saudi deal what currency will payments be in?
The rising Rand has knocked the African mining stocks this week, the re-valuation of the Malaysian cuurency could affect the price of palm oil.Everyone worries about receiving payments in USA dollars.I think we should pay more attention to currency considerations when investing in companies ,not just p/e etc.

To be fair ethel, with the recent announcemtn oof N. AMerican and S. Arabian deals, you might expect them to need some more working capital and 1.75m (before costs of placing) is not a lot of cash these days to service two major contract.
I believe they have now done their homework as to their real neds (cc news included) and whether debt or equity (or a mixture) is the best resource.
11.7m shares at 15p + 48.3m existing shares at 20p (? bid before announcement) = 60m at 19p. So the bid price is 1p below where it might be reflecting mild negative sentiment on the news - that's a 5% advantage on the price if you buy now before sentiment recovers.
Look at DDDI's option to buy 4m shares of the company at 30p this year and the proposed listing of DPPI on a N. American exhange (SYM owns 25% of this company) if you want to look forward to some good times to come.

why is this share being held back because of the appeal
i ask this for one simple reason
immerson are an american group who have just won a case against sony for (yes you can guess it) patient infringement.
what happens to this company when an appeal is anounced it rises by 19%
is this just an american thing or have the brits got something wrong with how they do buissness
just curious as unless they have new and as yet undesclosed evidence that might change the decission in fav of them then why is this share not flying of the shelves

Sony were found in the wrong and ordered to pay $90m for patent breach to Immersion which was 3 times their last years total revenue. That is why their share price rose. it actually went up by 32% at one stage prior to dropping back to 19%.
Of course Sony appealed, it part to stop the condition that would have stopped them from selling playstations immediately. Clearly the market expects sony to at least pay a huge out of court sum or the court figure in order to protect their position.
I think we over here have a somewhat smaller fish to fry. the decision was that no one has broken a patent, remember symphony were the defendant, means there is no big payout. the position remains as prior to the action rather than hugely changed as in the sony case.
hence what is important but bears little association here.

China has launched a surprise crackdown on plastic bags today by banning supermarkets and shops from handing out free carriers from June 1st.
China uses up to 3 billion plastic bags a day, the most in the world. But people fail to dispose of them properly, wasting valuable oil and littering the country, China's cabinet announced on the central government website.
"While providing convenience to consumers, they have also caused serious pollution, and waste of energy and resources, because of excessive use and inadequate recycling," the State Council said.
Late last year the town of Shenzhen unveiled draft regulations to ban free plastic bags in its shops.
Shopkeepers fretted that customers might be turned away and others accused the government of making residents shoulder the costs of environmental protection.
Part of the new rules seem similar to the Shenzhen plan, stating that from June shops, supermarkets and sales outlets would be forbidden to offer free plastic bags and all carriers must be clearly marked with their prices.
"We should encourage people to return to carrying cloth bags, using baskets for their vegetables," the notice said.
In addition the manufacture, sale and use of bags under 0.025 mm thick is banned from the same date, with fines and confiscation of goods and profits for firms that flout the rules.
Rubbish collectors were urged to separate plastic for reprocessing and cut the amount burnt or buried.
The move brings China in line with a growing international trend to cut back use of plastic bags. From Ireland to Uganda and South Africa governments have experimented with heavy taxes, outright bans or eliminating the thinnest bags.

Degradable plastic which 'self destructs' after as little as six months in any environment - land or water - which also emits no methane, even when buried. Is it too good to be true?
Following recent comments about tackling the growing problems of plastic waste, Symphony Environmental wants to point out that there is already a form of plastic which could solve many of the problems people find so worrying.
It is called oxo-biodegradable (oxo-bio) plastic is the answer. It makes plastic bags degrade completely and to a pre-set timespan, from six months onwards.
It also emits no methane even when buried in a landfill. As oxo-bio bags 'self destruct' automatically at the end of their lifespan, they disappear altogether even if they are not collected, either on land or in water, leaving no harmful residues.
However, if collected, they can be recycled. They can also be incinerated for energy recovery. Oxo-bio plastic is not made from crops or potential food stuffs, like some of the biodegradable plastic alternatives, and thus is no threat to the world's food chain.
The technology used to make oxo-bio bags is still comparatively new and many people are not yet fully aware of its capabilities. All too often it is confused with the starch-based (hydro-bio) alternative, which does emit methane, cannot be recycled and cannot be programmed to destruct to a pre-set lifespan.
Symphony Environmental has developed an oxo-bio additive, which when added to most forms of plastic at the manufacturing stage, changes its behaviour and gives it ithe properties of oxo-bio plastic.
Organisations using it in at least one application include Tesco, the Co-op, Walmart, the Science Museum, the Natural History Museum, the World Wildlife Fund and the Soil Association.
The use of oxo-bio plastic bags could dramatically cut the amount of long-term plastic waste left lying around in the streets, or polluting the countryside, our rivers and the sea - perhaps even obviating the need for a ban on them, or for other restrictions.

UK smallcap Symphony Environmental Technologies PLC said it is 'wrong' to ban plastic bags altogether, citing they are so light, strong, durable and convenient, adding plastic bags and products with a useful life of 5 years or less should be made oxo-biodegradable instead.
Symphony has over the past seven years made very large investments to create and develop an additive which, when added to normal polymers at the manufacturing stage, renders them oxo-biodegradable.
Oxo-biodegradable plastic bags pass the tests prescribed by American Standard 6954 and they degrade to carbon dioxide, water and biomass within a few months on land or in water leaving no fragments or harmful residues, the company said.

perhaps we will see a good climb back if and it is an if the company can make progress under the cloak of biodegradable agreements with big companies...anyone who has held these knows the potential...

It doesn't need to be a bandwagon driver as SYM has the technology and the products!

This just MM's making hay - why wouldn't they even on zero-volume? ( although wasting time in their lunch hour). . . .
IF Eco-plastic is "news" - then punters will pay "more" for it . . .don't be suckered-in - this outfit as well as SEO are running on empty -
Now watch the volumes rise!

driver - fair enough, I misinterpreted what you meant.
hangon - As stated above, SYM has the technology and the products and one day you won't be able to get a plastic bag in the UK for love nor money unless it's eco-friendly so I'm happy to sit tight and wait.

If this is true whats the cost of these bags in comparison to a normal plastic bag? Retailers should be crying out for them. Hard cash savings will intrest the commercial boys.

At last, some good news! :-
Symphony Environmental Tech. PLC
10 April 2008
For Immediate Release 10th April 2008
SYMPHONY ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGIES PLC
TIGERBRANDS - SOUTH AFRICA
LAUNCH d2w(R) OXO-BIODEGRADABLE BREAD PACKAGING
Symphony Environmental Technologies Plc ('Symphony' or 'the Company'), the
degradable plastics and waste-to-energy Group, is very pleased to announce the
following sales success with Albany Bakeries by its wholly-owned subsidiary,
Symphony Environmental Ltd.
Albany Bakeries of South Africa, a subsidiary of the leading food company Tiger
Brands has a substantial share of the national bread market and owns 12 major
bread plants that produce Albany Superior; Olde Cape; D'light and Everyday bread
ranges. Albany bread is the group's biggest user of packaging and has launched
Symphony's d2w(R) oxo-biodegradable plastic packaging for all their bread
products. Tiger Brands is one of the largest food producers in the world to
commit to reducing the potential for plastic pollution by their packaging.
This packaging is being manufactured for Albany Bakeries in South Africa by
three of the largest plastic producers, using high-speed machines and Albany
Bakeries' new d2w(R) oxo-biodegradable bread bags will mean that around 3,000
tonnes of packaging will no longer be contributing to the accumulation of
plastic waste in the environment.
This breakthrough into the South African food-sector was achieved through
Symphony's nominated distributor, Self-Destruct Plastics, who report that
current sales for Symphony's d2w(R) additives and products have exceeded all
their expectations.
Meghan Draddy Packaging Development Manager - Grains: Cereals; Milling & Baking
of Tiger Brands (South Africa), said:
'We are pleased to announce our ground-breaking co-operation with Symphony
Environmental Limited to protect the environment from the accumulation of
plastic waste. Following three years of discussions, trials, testing and
performance analysis, Tiger Brands has become South Africa's first national food
company to tackle the litter and plastic-waste pollution unavoidably resulting
from bakery operations.
Although plastic is the best packaging option, its reputation is tarnished by
the fact that plastic manufactured in 2008 will outlive those who make it; but
d2w(R) additives and products change all that. By this decision Tiger Brands has
set a path for others to follow. Up to 3,000 tonnes of potential litter and
waste per year will now degrade and then biodegrade, within a short timescale,
leaving no methane, no fragments and no harmful residues.'
Commenting on the product launch, Michael Laurier, Chief Executive of Symphony
Environmental Technologies plc, said:
'We are delighted to be jointly announcing with Tiger Brands this major
environmental breakthrough. This is extremely important news for South Africa
and sets an excellent example to many other users of plastic packaging
throughout the world. In addition to bread bags, a carrier-bag, a heavy
shrink-wrap, or a plastic bottle, can be made if using our standard d2w(R)
degradable plastic technology to totally self-destruct within a period of
between 6 months and two years (depending on environmental conditions) instead
of polluting the land and the sea for decades.'
We expect this important step to be the first of many developments in South
Africa. Symphony's d2w(R) degradable plastic technology is rapidly becoming
known as the market leader throughout the world and with South Africa's
progressive attitude on environmental issues we are delighted to have increased
our participation in this important market.'

I see at last some good news. Is this a juggernought starting to move? Could the biggest retailer in the world be interested? What a coup would it be if these bags could get into Wal-Mart. Surly they are the biggest user that would see the benefit.
