IQE - Silicon is the future (IQE)

Master RSI - 03 Feb 2003 11:56

IQE is the leading global outsource supplier of customized epitaxial wafers to the semiconductor industry.

Their technology is of most advanced like AFM means Atomic Force Microscopy and moves a minuscule cantilever over an objects surface, a sharp tip passes over dips or rises punched in the surface and reads out digital information. This technology is not going to slow down it is going to speed up and has to replace most existing forms of memory storage by virtue of capacity and size.

The future of nano-technology, these tiny/minute robots would need very small processors and most sure strained silicon could provide these.

The low share price is due to uncertainty as to when the cash will run out, but I don't think this will happen as cash is of 12 to 15M and NAV of 30p, and losses are going to drop on the next 3 month and we could have profits on the Q4 2004.

Latest news from the Chairman were" The Group remains confident that it is in a strong position within the outsourcing market, although the protection of its cash position is paramount.
With a broad product portfolio allowing the customer base to use IQE as a 'one stop shop', a large available production capacity and a strong balance sheet, the Board believes the Group will benefit strongly as the overall semiconductor industry recovers and will continue to strengthen its position as the leading outsource supplier of advanced wafer products to the sector. "

Nearly all the recent results have been encouraging. Q4 accounts are being completed (30th Dec 2002). IQE know where they stand, if things had got worse their would have been a trading statement by now, and with Amberwave (IQE's partner) increasing its Asian presence, this is a bullish trend and a good point to pick up the shares @ 4.25p

$16.2 m contract win

IQE plc

30 Oct 2009

IQE plc (AIM: IQE, "the Group") the leading manufacturer of advanced
semiconductor wafers to the global semiconductor industry, announces
that it has been contracted by a leading US RF products and foundry
service provider TriQuint Semiconductor (Nasdaq: TQNT) to provide its
Gallium Nitride (GaN) wafer products for the creation of complex,
high dynamic range circuits for future defence and aerospace
applications.

IQE's New Jersey operation sub-contract Gallium Nitride (GaN) wafer
products to TriQuint as part of an $16.2 million Defence Advanced
Research Projects Agency (DARPA) multi-year Gallium Nitride (GaN) R&D
contract. The programme aims to advance GaN research and develop new
generations of compound semiconductor circuits through the Nitride
Electronic NeXt-Generation Technology (NEXT) program.

"GaN is already recognized for its ability to handle more power per
square millimeter than other semiconductor technologies like gallium
arsenide, and much more so than silicon. Yet even with the advances
TriQuint has pioneered, today's analogue GaN technology has frequency
and power limits.

"NEXT circuits will be `game-changing` technology that could
radically improve performance in defence and aerospace applications
like phased array radar and communications. NEXT calls for complex
digital GaN circuits that also have very high breakdown
voltages-something that silicon can't do, and that is also beyond the
scope of today's other semiconductor processes," said TriQuint's
Principal Investigator, Senior Fellow Dr. Paul Saunier.

Alex Ceruzzi, VP and General Manager of IQE's New Jersey facility
commented:

"IQE and TriQuint have enjoyed a close relationship over many years
and our role in this programme clearly demonstrates IQE's ability to
provide world class materials across a broad RF product portfolio.

"The four and half year NEXT programme lead by TriQuint will utilise
IQE's GaN wafer product expertise with the ultimate aim of developing
and producing advanced semiconductor chips with operating frequencies
up to 500GHz."

IQE's New Jersey facility is the leading GaN HEMT epi foundry, and
provides a complete portfolio of RF products, ranging from high
volume HEMTs, HBTs and BiFETs to advanced GaN based products. The
Group's Gallium Nitride production capability was recently increased
through the acquisition of UK-based NanoGan Limited announced earlier
in October 2009.

"Fitch: Growth in IT Spending Supports Stable Outlook for Tech Industry in 2010"

3 Dec 2009 - Fitch Ratings' 2010 outlook for information technology (IT) sectors is STABLE based on EXPECTATIONS that GLOBAL IT SPENDING will RESUME GROWTH equivalent to or EXCEEDING WORLDWIDE GDP.

In a SPECIAL OUTLOOK REPORT issued today, Fitch says IMPROVED MARKET DEMAND, especially for enterprise hardware and particularly for the second half of the year, will drive company expectations for 2010 and should further STABILIZE TECHNOLOGY OPERATING and CREDIT PROFILES.

"A gradually IMPROVING ECONOMY should result in sequentially BETTER DEMAND PATTERNS for technology companies in 2010," said Nick Nilarp, Managing Director at Fitch.

"There is CONSIDERABLE PENT-UP ENTERPRISE DEMAND for hardware purchases, primarily servers and storage, which have been postponed the last two years during the global economic downturn."

Key Themes to Fitch's IT Outlook.

-The worldwide IT SPENDING environment will GROW 3%-4% in 2010, led by hardware. Fitch expects the IT services industry to grow 3%-5% in 2010 while the SEMICONDUCTOR INDUSTRY will experience a REBOUND in REVENUE GROWTH at low- to mid-single digits;

-PC and MOBILE HANDSET UNIT GROWTH is expected to be in the high-single digits and mid-single digits, respectively, for 2010; Fitch believes the release of Windows 7 will positively affect PC demand from consumers in the fourth quarter of 2009, small and medium business in the first half of 2010 and large enterprise in late 2010 into early 2011; the PC mix will likely continue to be skewed towards consumers, potentially resulting in minimal to negative PC revenue growth in 2010 based on the recent declines in PC average selling prices;

-OPERATING PROFITABILITY is expected to IMPROVE as COST REDUCTION INITIATIVES result in POSITIVE OPERATING LEVERAGE upon the resumption of TOP LINE GROWTH.

IQE plc

9 December 2009

IQE and Intel Corporation presented a joint paper on the development
of InGaAs on Si devices with high-K gate dielectrics for low power
logic applications. The paper was presented by
Dr. Marko Radosavljevic of Intel Corporation at the International
Electron Devices Meeting (IEDM) held in Baltimore, MD from 7th to 9th
December 2009. The paper presented the results of work carried out by
scientists at Intel's Technology and Manufacturing Group in Oregon
and IQE's epitaxial growth facility in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

The ever increasing performance requirements of modern-day
microprocessors has for decades been achieved by the continuous
scaling of Si CMOS devices, but this enhanced performance is at the
cost of increased power consumption. In recent years, scientists have
been looking towards materials based solutions to ensure that
technology can keep up with the demands of following Moore's Law.

Compound semiconductor-based Quantum Well Field Effect Transistor
(QWFET) provide the potential for achieving high performance and low
power consumption in future generation microprocessor applications,
and the integration with Si transistors on a single chip provides the
optimal solution.

The paper, entitled: "Advanced High-K Gate Dielectric for
High-Performance Short-Channel In0.7Ga0.3As Quantum Well Field Effect
Transistors on Silicon Substrate for Low Power Logic Applications,"
relates to the development of novel technology for producing leading
edge transistor devices for future generation high-speed, ultra-low
power digital logic applications.

IQE's facility in Bethlehem, PA, produced the blanket InGaAs QWFET
epiwafers grown on Si substrates using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE).
Intel Corporation used the blanket epiwafers for their transistor
design and fabrication.

Steve Gergar, General Manager of IQE's Pennsylvania operation
commented:

"IQE has played a key role in the development of epitaxial materials
upon which Intel has fabricated devices which demonstrate improved
device characteristics and significantly higher transistor drive
performance whilst maintaining low power consumption.

"The results of this work demonstrate IQE's strength in advanced
epitaxial material engineering built on many years of experience with
III-V materials from research and development through to high-volume
production. Based on this successful research to-date, IQE looks
forward to continued work with Intel in the area of III-V on Si
integration for future generation high performance digital
applications."
