THE TALK TO YOURSELF THREAD. (NOWT)

goldfinger - 09 Jun 2005 12:25

Thought Id start this one going because its rather dead on this board at the moment and I suppose all my usual muckers are either at the Stella tennis event watching Dim Tim (lose again) or at Henly Regatta eating cucumber sandwiches (they wish,...NOT).

Anyway please feel free to just talk to yourself blast away and let it go on any company or subject you wish. Just wish Id thought of this one before.

cheers GF.

0847: The UK's Daily Telegraph has a piece based on Wikileaks cables saying Japan was warned by the IAEA more than two years ago that its nuclear power plants were not capable of withstanding powerful earthquakes.

A UK rescue team says they were forced to leave Japan because they could not secure the necessary paperwork from the British embassy in Tokyo.

The International Rescue Corps said they were not given permission to work in Japan because it would have made the embassy legally responsible for them.

Hilary,

Don't know about multi-tasking, but how is it that whenever my wife is watching something important, you know like any cooking/gardening/house improving or similar program my wife glares daggers at me if I interrupt by talking even briefly, but when something trivial like 'world breaking news or any type of sport, especially football, it's OK to incessantly rattle on.
I often think that if the news was that the third world war had broken out and I drew her attention to it, she would say, "Is it dear" then go back to reading her book (she is an avid bookworm), but if the news was say, something to do with a celeb then it would be all ears.

Women! As they say, can't live with them, can't live without them.

Note.... Women have to multi-task as they can't concentrate on 1 thing for more than 2 seconds.

Now.....Will this wind Hilary up?

Greek.

Greek.

Perhaps, When she is reading her book, she is attempting to shut you out.

Hils

Thanks for the explanation on why you bought the DVD Series of Boardwalk Empire instead of watching recordings of it on Sky+.

Now I understand very clearly that you spend loads more 1 hour slots of being a back seat passenger in your car and thus being much more able to watch a TV series, than you possibly could ever do at home.

Simples. Sorry, I didn't realise that. :-)

I think the Japanese PM must be a fan of Winston Churchill, who was famous latterly for making pulic appearances in similar garb.

In 1940, when Churchill became prime minister, he was already nearing 70. He was known for his old-fashioned suits and bow ties ( and a cigar too, of course).

He adopted a utilitarian "siren suit" to sorta kinda prove he was a man of the people.

The siren suit was really a glorified boiler suit with a zippered front. It was meant to be donned quickly - over pyjamas if necessary - during air raids. Churchill had a hand in its design and wore it often, especially when working late at the underground Cabinet War Rooms.

In addition to his workaday siren suits, Churchill had a version made in red velvet.

Nice, eh? If I had one made, I think I would go for more of an 'apple green'.

Fred1new - 16 Mar 2011 10:42 - 10773 of 81564

Rompers would suit both of you!

aldwickk - 16 Mar 2011 12:06 - 10774 of 81564

Greekman ,

Does your wife also have one of those e-books , Kindle priced at about 100 ?

I think i would prefer a book. I think its all marketing hype same with those new phones loads of functions that you don't need. People get brain washed that their are not part of the exciting social life of the young in crowd

Just had some junk mail from BT, who are also my Internet provider.

"Get it all for just 3 per month, instead of 5."

This is for unlimited UK landline calls at any time of the day or night. It also includes 0845 and 0870 numbers and also a 1571 BT Answer facility and also Caller Display to show you who is calling before you answer.

Just sign the form and send it back. So that's easy enough. And not a bad deal. So where's the catch?

On the form it says:

"Please sign me up to the Unlimited Anytime Plan on a 12-month contract for just 3 a month."

This deal is apparently, "Invitation Only".

And the new contract sign up is the catch. I guess you wouldn't be able to do it unless you are nearing the end of your contract. Otherwise they would really be giving money away.

Aldwickk,

My wife likes 'real books' as do I although the only time I tend to read books is on holiday.

Just sent in another order to my favourite Fishmonger:

http://stores.ebay.co.uk/SEAFOOD-TO-YOUR-DOOR?_trksid=p4340.l2563

This guy's (his name is Adam Hendrikson) stuff is so fresh that sometimes it is still alive when it arrives (eg, the crabs, although I see he doesn't have any live ones on his site at the moment).

One delivery costs 8.50. That is no matter how much you include within the order. Sometimes we get together with our neighbours and friends and combine an order to take advantage of the single delivery cost. Everything arrives individually wrapped and in a proper polystyrene box and packed with ice.

The quality and freshness is fantastic. That's what an eBay Feedback Rating does for you as a discerning buyer.

I recently found myself in contact, through forces reunited, with a chap I was in the RAF with 40 years ago.Didnt like him much then! Within a couple of lines of his e-mail I found myself gritting my teeth until I finally deleted it and him. The moral of my story is People do not change. Oh yes we may appear contrite when the repercussions of our actions are about to come home to roost. But in general as humans we are blind to seeing the light!! Excuse the pun! By even replying to someone who has offended you is pandering to their desire to inflict pain on you. They should be viewed with some pity in their small narrow world. A kind word turneth away wrath!! But a good kick in the nuts is so much more satisfying!! There is no worse fate for a trouble maker than to be ignored. Peace friends.

ExecLine - 16 Mar 2011 21:43 - 10779 of 81564

Pretty well 'spot on', with your take on that, beebusy, IMHO.

aldwickk - 16 Mar 2011 22:58 - 10780 of 81564

His name wasn't Fred by any chance ?

greekman - 17 Mar 2011 07:05 - 10781 of 81564

Beebusy,

You said, "A kind word turneth away wrath!! But a good kick in the nuts is so much more satisfying!"

When I read the first bit, I thought, here we go, another turn the other cheek believer, then I read the second part. Great, true and very funny.

I think now days if you turn the other cheek you offer yet another target for someone to smack.

I am very glad that many on this thread are now retired and can't implement their philosophies.
