Sugarloaf Block B Project - Texas, USA
---------------------------------------

Kennedy #1H
-----------

Empyrean advises that the Kennedy #1H exploration well, located in the onshore
Gulf Coast Basin in Texas, USA, commenced drilling at 18:30 hours Texas time on
17 September 2007.

At report time (06:00 hours on 18 September 2007, Texas time) the well had
reached a depth of 565 feet in 17.5 inch diameter hole and was drilling ahead.

The proposed total depth of Kennedy#1H is 17,570 feet (5,360 metres) which
includes a horizontal section of approximately 5,000 feet (1,525 metres) to be
drilled through the Austin Chalk Formation at a vertical depth of approximately
12,000 feet. The zone to be targeted by this horizontal section is believed to
correlate with the producing section in the Sugarkane Field discovery well which
is located some 8 km to the west of Kennedy #1H.

On a trouble-free basis the prognosed drilling time for this well is about 45
days.

Sugarloaf-1 Well

Kennedy #1H is located some 1.6 km from the Sugarloaf-1 well where fraccing and
testing operations were commenced last week. Fracture stimulation of the deepest
of the three zones of gas shows and log interpreted potential gas pay in the
Cretaceous age Austin Chalk Formation was carried out on 11 September. The
fracture stimulation operation terminated early after a premature screen-out
halted pumping after only 6% of the planned proppant was placed in the
formation. The reason for the screen-out is not known.

Proppant in the well bore is presently being washed out by a work-over rig prior
to running tubing to test the zone. Some intermittent gas is being recovered
during this operation. The significance of the gas shows will not be known until
test operations are completed.

Further announcements will be made as results from this test become available.

The information contained in this announcement was completed and reviewed by the
Technical director of Empyrean Energy Plc, Mr Frank Brophy BSc (Hons) who has
over 40 years experience as a petroleum geologist.

The frac job has been a wee bit of a cockup then. ;-0

cynic - 19 Sep 2007 10:21 - 1102 of 2087

from the little i know about fraccing in Saudi, it is a run of the mill exercise ..... if EME use a similar procedure of HCL+gel or similar, who are the incompetent nitwits who screwed up and will EME have any recourse? - prob not!

Big Al - 19 Sep 2007 10:49 - 1103 of 2087

Certainly seems to have been a waste of time and effort, cynic. 6% ain't gonna prop up much is it? ;-)))

No oil company has any recourse in this situation. At the end of the day, the operator was running the show and all decisions rest with them.

niceonecyril - 19 Sep 2007 10:59 - 1104 of 2087

My reading of the situation is, while at 1st its not good they have not
abandoned the well so theirs still a chance of success, suggestions of the
cement squeeze falure?
And you have missed the positive news, spudding of the kennady1 horizontal,
which is targeting the S/Kane, with the info they have on this field unlikely they
would commit funds, unless they were more than a little confident?
Al, i find quite often the link does not work, so better to type manually as its
correct. For future ref.
cyril

Big Al - 19 Sep 2007 11:11 - 1105 of 2087

cyril - they would never abandon and I wasn't wanting to imply that. The first test is basically screwed as regards maximising any flow. There are other horizons, but if they've knackered a cement squeeze then they will not be able to frac anything else until it's repaired, assuming the other horizons are dependent on it.

BTW, I don't find spudding a well positive news as such. It just means they're spending more dosh drilling and the law of averages states it could be dry as well as a gusher. ;-)))) In fact given EME's normal "average" I wouldn't be jumping up and down with joy!! LOL

niceonecyril - 19 Sep 2007 12:28 - 1106 of 2087

Al thats terrible, EME have only 6% S/L1,(more in Kennady, but still a minor position) so hardly their call. EME's average according to oilbarrel is above the norm, but yoy are ignoring the whole picture, with several wells already
drilled a fair amount is known. So your really questioning the judgement of the
major COP,via Burlington.
cyril

Big Al - 19 Sep 2007 13:34 - 1107 of 2087

COP?

niceonecyril - 19 Sep 2007 14:30 - 1108 of 2087

Connocophillips the owners of Burlington.

Big Al - 19 Sep 2007 15:13 - 1109 of 2087

Ah. Don't care who I question really. Even the best can screw it up. ;-))

Big Al - 19 Sep 2007 15:14 - 1110 of 2087

PS - I've seen quite a few COP cockups over the years too. ;-)))
