WANdisco stands for Wide Area Network Distributed Computing, and we make software happen.
This is because our technology is the secret ingredient behind the products that you use every day – from mobile phones to machinery. We are an active member of the community that develops the world’s most popular Source Code product: Subversion, and our technology is used by half of the world’s software developers.
Our customers include a host of Fortune 1000 companies such as Hewlett Packard, Intel, John Deere, European Southern Observatory, Barclays Capital, Walmart, GE and Cisco.
How it works
With our patented technology, software developers in distributed locations can work simultaneously, creating a seamless global network. Users at every site where WANdisco is installed have local access to the same data at all times, which means that they can make changes locally and see each other’s changes immediately.
We are proud to have a 98% customer renewal rate – which is driven by compelling ROI data: a recent study from Forrester Research has shown that our Subversion MultiSite offers a 167% return on investment with a nine-month payback period.
The company
Co-founded in 2005 by David Richards, Jim Campigli and Dr Yeturu Aahlad, WANdisco has dual headquarters in Silicon Valley and Sheffield, England. WANdisco grew, without raising any private equity, venture capital or angel finance to become a leading provider of global collaboration software to the software development industry.
On June 1st, 2012 the company had a highly successful IPO on the London Stock Exchange raising over $24 million. The IPO was oversubscribed by over 300% and the list of investors included Fidelity, Legal & General, Blackrock, Artemis, Hargreave Hale, Cazenove, M&G, Octopus and Standard Life. It's a great time for enterprises requiring a hardened, non-stop Hadoop," said David Richards, CEO of WANdisco
WANdisco Launches World's First Production-Ready Apache Hadoop 2 Distribution for Big Data
Non-Stop Platform Backed by Global Team of Worldwide Experts
SAN RAMON, CA--(Marketwire - Feb 8, 2013) - WANdisco ( LSE : WAND ), a provider of high-availability software for global enterprises to meet the challenges of Big Data and distributed software development, today announced it has made its WANdisco Distro (WDD) available for free download. WDD is the first fully tested, production-ready version powered by Apache Hadoop 2 based on the most recent release, including the latest fixes. These certified Apache Hadoop binaries undergo the same rigorous quality assurance process as WANdisco's enterprise software solutions.
The WDD team is led by Dr. Konstantin Boudnik, who is one of the original Hadoop developers, has been an Apache Hadoop committer since 2009 and served as a Hadoop architect with Yahoo! This dedicated team of Apache Hadoop development, QA and support professionals is focused exclusively on delivering the highest quality version of the software. WANdisco's Apache Hadoop developers have been involved in the open source project since its inception and have the authority within the Apache Hadoop community to make changes to the code base, ensuring fast delivery of fixes and enhancements.
Foundation for WANdisco's Enterprise Hadoop Products
WDD lays the foundation for WANdisco's enterprise Hadoop solutions that deliver 24-by-7 availability, scalability and performance globally, without any downtime or data loss. By adding its patented active-active replication technology to WDD, WANdisco is able to eliminate the single points of failure (SPOFs) and performance bottlenecks inherent in Hadoop. With this technology, the same data is simultaneously readable and writable on every server, and every server is actively supporting user requests. There are no passive or standby servers with complex administration procedures required for failover and recovery.
"WANdisco's active-active replication technology not only aims to eliminate single points of failure in Hadoop, but it could also be used to extend Hadoop deployment over wide areas. Users could start to utilize Hadoop as a globally distributed resource," said Tony Baer, principal analyst for Ovum.
In the event of a network or server outage, failover is immediate and recovery is automatic without administrator intervention. There is no downtime, even in the case of planned maintenance. These capabilities can be delivered across data centers over a Wide Area Network (WAN) as well as a Local Area Network (LAN), providing users around the world with non-stop global business continuity.
"WANdisco, with its active-active technology, delivers the non-stop global performance, scalability and availability that enterprise customers are demanding worldwide," said DJ Das, Founder and CEO, Third Eye Consulting Services & Solutions LLC, a company focused on delivering services around Big Data and a WANdisco systems integration partner. "WANdisco Distro is the only production-ready, enterprise-grade Hadoop distro that guarantees 100% uptime with multiple active NameNodes deployed in every cluster."
"This is one of a number of key Big Data product announcements WANdisco will be making between now and the upcoming Strata 2013 Big Data conference in Santa Clara, CA, February 26-28. It's a great time for enterprises requiring a hardened, non-stop Hadoop," said David Richards, CEO of WANdisco. "Only our patented active-active technology removes the single point of failure inherent in Hadoop and works locally and globally. We are excited to have Dr. Konstantin Boudnik, one of the original developers of Hadoop, leading this rollout."
Professional Service and Support
WANdisco is also announcing enterprise-class professional support for organizations deploying Hadoop clusters utilizing WDD. More than a first line of defense, WANdisco support engineers are open source experts, providing in-depth professional assistance and ensuring customers get the most from their deployment. With WANdisco employees around the globe providing local support, customers are assured they are moving in the right direction toward their business goals. Valuation: Hadoop credentials continue to grow
At 17x 2014 EV/sales the market is clearly now pricing in some commercial traction in Hadoop and an acceleration in growth beyond our estimates, which currently do not factor in any contribution from these products. However, success in bringing on board major commercial partners should project the company into a select group of four or five independent companies at the core of Hadoop, one of the key technologies underpinning the structural growth of big data. Given the strategic value and growth potential which such a position would make capable, we can therefore see upside potential to the current share price. Cloudera, one of the leading independent Hadoop software and support providers recently raised $65m, purportedly at a $700m valuation.

Back in January I asked if a 2014 PE of 103 was a tad excessive. Well at 735p the shares now trade on a 2014 PE of 153, falling to 49. The bear case is that we have yet to see proof of commercialisation, that tech is a fast moving area and so one cannot extrapolate revenue growth of 30-50% ad infinitum.
The bull case is that with gross margins of 98%, if sales growth is maintained at the 3-50% rate then by 2016 earnings could well be 30p ( PE down to 25) and falling. The second bull point is that this is just the sort of company that a firm like Oracle would buy at which point conventional valuation metrics go out of the window.
So let’s be prudent. The gains for those who followed my initial tip are now just under 50% which in a month and two days is not bad. I would suggest selling two thirds of your holding to lock in some of those gains but leave the rest “on the table”. Essentially you will then get a free ride on what could still be an explosive growth story.

San Ramon, CA – February 11, 2013 - WANdisco (LSE: WAND), a provider of high-availability software for global enterprises to meet the challenges of Big Data and distributed software, announced that it has become a member of the Fusion-io Technology Alliance Program (TAP). The program focuses on working with leaders in strategic market segments to deliver proven solutions, access to resources, and expertise to enhance the value of technology offerings.
“The Fusion-io Technology Alliance Program enables us to work with innovative companies to provide powerful solutions that maximize ROI for customers by integrating Fusion-io reliability and performance to the unique value added by our TAP members,” said Tyler Smith, Fusion-io vice president of alliances. “With rapid growth in big data demands around the world, customers require proven solutions and expertise that deliver Hadoop availability with no downtime or data loss. WANdisco is a valuable addition to our Technology Alliance Program as we work together to fulfill the market demand for innovative and proven big data solutions.”
By applying WANdisco’s patented active-active replication technology to Hadoop, enterprises can put truly effective business continuity strategies in place by having globally distributed data synchronized in real-time. WANdisco’s technology is the only solution to provide 100 percent uptime with unbeatable performance and scalability by providing multiple active NameNodes in a single cluster, and it works over both Wide Area Networks (WANs) spanning multiple servers thousands of miles apart, as well as over Local Area Networks (LANs). This provides enterprises with non-stop availability and addresses planned outages by allowing administrators to take servers offline for maintenance without interrupting user access. Adding proven Fusion-io performance to the WANdisco architecture provides an ideal solution for rapidly extracting actionable information from Hadoop while ensuring utmost reliability across big data architectures.
“The complexity of big data makes it compelling to aggregate the expertise of leaders in innovation, underscoring the value of partnership programs like the Fusion-io Technology Alliance Program in developing ideal solutions for enterprise customers,” said Mark Schreiber, vice president of business development for WANdisco. “WANdisco addresses the crucial non-stop availability and performance issues related to Hadoop to ensure enterprises can quickly begin to benefit from their big data. The combination of WANdisco and Fusion-io is compelling for any enterprise deploying Hadoop.”
