Thought Id start this one going because its rather dead on this board at the moment and I suppose all my usual muckers are either at the Stella tennis event watching Dim Tim (lose again) or at Henly Regatta eating cucumber sandwiches (they wish,...NOT).
Anyway please feel free to just talk to yourself blast away and let it go on any company or subject you wish. Just wish Id thought of this one before.
cheers GF.

There was/is nothing discrete in the way this debacle has been managed.

N,
I don't think you are that thick. 8-) Grumpy? Yes.
What you wrote reminds me of what my father had on his office wall, and he said he read it every day and occasionally to others:-
"If you think yourself indispensible, place one of your fingers in a bucket of water and when you removed it notice the hole it leave behind when you removed it.”
No one is immortal and the world will go on after them.
As far as Stephen Hester is concerned, if he was given a contract then he is fully entitled to have it fulfilled.
Also, if you are not prepared to pay the piper for his tune, don’t hire him.
That applies to “civil servants” as well as various “board members”.
One can equalise the disproportions between private and public incomes etc, by modification of taxation and implementing the rules.
But, it always amazed me how many academics doing research were working the as hard they were, for relatively lower salaries than they could have earn in private industry and professions.
Sometimes, it was done because of the “freedom” to pursue their interests with financial security, even at a lower level of the latter.
(it is "nice" to have Murray, Nadal, Jokovic Fedderer around at the same time, but tennis would be played, even if they weren't.

So you take on a job in an almost bankrupt company for average pay for the job with the promise of a bonus if you turn it around.
You turn around a £1,600,000,000 loss into a £2,000,000,000 profit and your employer sticks up two fingers at you and tells you that he is not going to pay you any bonus. What is your next move?
If it was Me I would expect, at the bare minimum. at least a 10% bonus as that would leave my employer with 90%. In this case my employer would be taking back half of my bonus in tax anyway.

The Hester thing is just "one" typical example of the many extremes of the "Money to the Top " culture (whilst the rest can go hang) that has developed in the UK over the last 33 years or so.

To celebrate tax filing deadline day:
The tax inspector was reading the story of Cinderalla to his little son. suddenly the boy interrupted him. "Daddy, when the pumpkin turned into a golden coach, would that be classed as income or a long term capital gain?"
Why do sharks not attack tax inspectors? Professional courtesy.
A man saw two white coated doctors searching in the flower beds. "Have you lost something?" "No. We're doing a heart transplant for a tax inspector and we want to find a suitable stone"

T i m,
It would appear to some, that some are greedier Bs. than others.
It has similarities to a doctor negotiating with a dying man about the size of his fee before he will take a tourniquet from around his neck.

Glad to see Cameron is keeping his end up at Brussels.
He is looking puffier and puffier or perhaps he is full of wind.

Europe signs up to German-led fiscal pact
(Reuters) -
Chancellor Angela Merkel cemented her political ascendancy in Europe Monday when 25 out of 27 EU states agreed to a German-inspired pact for stricter budget discipline, even as they struggled to rekindle growth from the ashes of austerity.

The old ones are the best :-)
The difference between the short and long income tax forms is simple. If you use the short form, the government gets your money. If you use the long form, the tax advisor gets your money.
What's the difference between a taxidermist and a tax collector?
The taxidermist only takes the skin.
How do you know you've met a good tax accountant?
He has a loophole named after him.

It5 looks like the current stamps are a great investment. It seems that they are goi9ng up in price by 50% or so in a couple of months. I intend buying a large supply in the next week or two.

Good Idea.
Tanker,
Haven't a clue to "value".
Perhaps, OXFAM or Médecins Sans Frontières.
They would appreciate them.
